As for the trade: Dont kid yourself. It was a desperate move by Colangelo - who is in a contract year and was under immense pressure to make something happen and this, even though it's a stupid direction for them, is something and it gets them attention.

Gay is a horrible fit for them.

He's claiming they aren't done trading.

Last rumour I heard was he was trying hard for Josh Smith.

Bargs and Ross? Don't know if that would do it, would Atlanta want Bargs?

But I agree, terrible trade.

Rumor has it that the Raptors might trade DeRozan and Bargnani to the Hawks for Josh Smith, making Ross their SG of the future.

No way ATL takes on those two contracts after getting all the flexibility after the Johnson trade.

Doesn't that line up remind you of another team?

Let me give you a clue:

Felton - Jackson - Wallace - Diaw - Chalndler

with Gerald Henderson and Tyrus Thomas being key reserves.

Enjoy the 8th seed and a first round sweep while your roster is choc full of bloated contracts.........chumps.

That lineup isn't even as good as our playoff team.

2010 Felton < Lowry but only slightly
2010 Jack >>> Derozan
2010 Wallace >>>>>>>>> Rudy Gay
Diaw >>>> Bargnani
2010 Chandler > Valanciunas so far

Their bench is better but our 2010 starting five blows that lineup out of the water. Their ceiling is a 6th seed whenever Rudy Gay is playing for his next contact (2015?). They won't even make the playoffs this year. Derozan/Gay/Bargnani/Fields might be the most overpaid quartet in the league right now.

You guys can go ahead and sleep on the 2013-14 Raptors if you want but they'll be making noise in the Eastern Conference come next season.

Difference being one is unfounded and one is not.

Kemba is a PG, he's proven that. Knight is not, he's proven that.

I don't think Knight is horrible, but I also don't think he's ever going to be anything more than a slightly below average starter. They'll probably run Calderon at the point for more passing, bring Knight along slowly and maybe Calderon mentors him.[/quote]
I didn't say he's horrible. I said he's a horrible PG. as a 6th man or SG next to a real PG, he should be okay. This also makes you wonder what they plan on doing with Stuckey. Is he not a PG anymore either? Is he the starting 2? 6th man? Same questions for Knight?

And I don't know about you, but Calderon is not the type of guy I want mentoring my young PG.

I'm with Slam and CHA77 on this one. The Raptors are more exciting and vastly improved with the Gay trade to be sure but they just blew their entire wad with respect to cap flexibility to plateau as a 7th or 8th seed that will be outed in the first round come playoff time.

In the same vein, I know alot of folks want to run out and sign Al Jefferson this offseason but his addition would do nothing more than adding perhaps 10-15 wins to our already sh*tty record while taking us out of contention for any of the franchise caliber talent that's going to be available in the 2014 draft.

If I'm Cho, I dont add any high dollar vet pieces until we have an adequately deep young nucleus with a franchise caliber young guy or two [i.e. something looking like Kemba, (Mclemore or Shabazz), (Parker,Wiggins or Vonleh) and a decent young big like a Kanter who I would gladly offer up MKG and Biz in an effort to acquire].

Only then do you add the Al Jefferson types and in doing so, not only are we propelled back into the playoff mix, but we'll have a team capable of winning a series or two in the process.

I really think this was a good trade for each team.

Detroit- gets a point guard who is expiring gets out of Prince contract, which was 3 years for 18 million. yuck, and gain a ton of cap room this offseason.

Memphis- gets enough back to not suck in playoffs, but opens up options for future.

Toronto- what they were doing wasnt working. They were going to have another useless first rounder with low chance of stardom. Now they have a backcourt of Lowry Derozan Gay. Ton of depth on wings with Landry, Ross, Klieza and Anderson. Bargnani and Jonas in the frontcourt with Gray and Amir as backups.

I think if Toronto can flip Bargnani into something, like Josh Smith, then they have a chance to be a top 5 seed in the east potentially. They can afford to risk on Gay, because JV, Ross, and Lowry are cheap.

Yeah I think Detroit got the best of it. Got rid of Prince, which was a half decade and a ton of money too late, and got a veteran true PG who can at least mentor Knight on how to become a decent-to-solid PG. More importantly, it finally gives them a reason to get rid of Stuckey. Calderon's defense is absolutely atrocious but his offense is very good.

I like it for Memphis. They trade their wildly overpaid role player for two guys who could actually fit quite well in their rotation. I'm surprised they got positive value for that contract.

I don't see it for Toronto. These kinds of deals are the reason Raptor fans hate their management. They're more cash-strapped and treadmilled than we ever were. They're on the sub-playoff treadmill, literally the worst place you can possibly be. It isn't even that great of an upgrade in talent to warrant the 40M+ extra they'll have to pay Gay instead of Davis and Calderon.

Actually the more I think of this trade. I think Memphis could of messed up. They may be the most boring team in the playoffs now, with pretty much no perimeter scoring. They do alright in the Gay trade getting Davis, Prince and daye, but Davis can only play without either Gasol or Randolph on the floor.

Who is going to be their go to option at end of games? Conley, Allen and Prince are all pretty passive offensive players. I understand they won in the playoffs without gay, but they had Mayo then who could be go to scorer on perimeter.

I think you are overlooking the fact that the aquisition of Davis makes ZBo tradeable. I think that Memphis could get some pretty decent wing scoring in exchange for such a great post player. I would let them take their pick of our wings minus MKG.

Wow, great addition for Memphis and now makes Z-bo expendable.
