Yes, this is another bad decision but it is more in line with the Hornets trading SGA.
Like SGA, Hornets never drafted Duren with the intention of keeping him. They made the selection for the acquiring team, there was no world where Hornets were drafting both Mark Williams and Jalen Duren in the same draft both in the top 15 picks.

Initially dealt for 1 1st, 4 2nds.

Final Tally for the Hornets trade if you follow it all the way through all the many transactions.

So yeah they could have used that pick on virtually anyone in that range and come up in a similar or better spot.

Again, if there was no trade offer, we would taken Mark Williams and If we are realistic, they could have taken Agbaji, AJ Griffin, Tari Eason, Dalen Terry, Jake Laravia, Malaki Branham with the 15th pick.

Another instance where it is super easy to say we could have Tari Eason. When in reality the front office could have selected Malaki Branham or Ochai instead.

Fun game instead...if we want to play the could have anyone in hindsight.
Could have traded Duren/13th pick for all the best run outs.

Dwight padded his stats but was a terrible fit. See article above discussing the failed move. Dwight was a trade to get out from under the horrible miles plumlee trade. They thought cliff could manage Dwight. He couldn't. Dwight was selfish, couldn't set a screen and was a poor fit on the roster, despite his stats.

The amount of mental gymnastics being done to try to justify that Marco trade rather than just admitting that was a bad example to your original point. But do carry on enlightening us pleebs as to why the Marco trade was a smart move.

He wasn't prime Dwight, but pretty much all the stats would say otherwise.
Hornets went 36-46, man we would die for that record this day in age.
Dwight was 2nd in scoring, 3rd in minutes played.
2nd in EPM.
We were 2.9 pts better with Dwight on the floor then off.

I would say that was pretty solid role player season for him at age 34.

That’s what I acknowledged, when he agreed to become a role player he produced and I thought he might stick but he couldn’t.

We have different definitions of sticking then, he won a title as a role player at age 34, played until he was age 36. I don't really think that is some massive underwhelming end to his career. Did you expect him to be a starting center impacting games at age 35-37?

You can't have too many young guys, until you turn the dollar into quarters to take many more diluted talent young guys over the next couple of years instead.

He also traded to early seconds in that draft to move up 3 spots to #31 to take a non-shooting, undersized center in Nnaji the next year. Boy did he like burning almost equal value seconds to move up like 2 or 3 spots in the second round lol.

Still he's a HOF you make it sound like he underachieved. A champion and a guy who should have been a top 75 player.

guessing you didn't watch post prime Dwight. He absolutely underachieved between 2012 and 2019 until LeBron got him to humble himself and play the role Kobe had wanted him to play in his first stint with the Lakers but had refused to do so- a mindset that cost him about 7 years of productive play.

Hornets Dwight was still an absolute freak of nature physically and athletically, and would have been one of the league's best big men if he actually played to his strengths, instead of posting up, jacking up mid range jumpers and trying to play point center. There were glimpses of actual dominance in the PnR with Kemba, which Dwight refused to do most of the time.

The overall result was a season where the stats look great with 17/12, but in reality, the team didn't miss him at all after he was swapped with Bismack Biyombo the next year.

I followed Dwight pretty well throughout his career. He was actually my favorite player during his prime. The problem is people still had high expectations for him after the back surgery. His game took a decline the moment he had the back surgery.

If he doesn't get the back injury his career is much better than it is viewed even though hes still a HOF.

The guy was going to go down as a top 5 center of all-time had he not injured his back. I remember a time when he was in the discussion as the 2nd best player in the league behind LeBron. He was the only guy in the East who beat LeBron without a super team.

My expectations when we got Dwight in Charlotte was never high. He just wasn't the same player he once was. People thought he was going to change the franchise when he wasn't physically capable of carrying a franchise anymore. It's why he bounced around throughout those years.

It's good because he got humbled real quick near the end. Nobody wanted him and he literally had to take a non guaranteed contract with the Lakers as his last chance to prove himself thanks to LEBRON. He played his role and won a championship because of it.

At the end of the day he's a HOF.

I can't hold someone accountable if the reason they declined was because of a major surgery.

Dwight was still putting up solid numbers his impact just wasn't the same because he loss a lot of mobility and athleticism. Back injuries are one of the scariest injuries in all of sports. Literally took Larry Bird out.

I agree with his lack of maturity. He was never a serious guy to begin with. He did cause drama a lot of places.

I disagree on his athleticism. There is a difference between Orlando Dwight and post surgery Dwight. He looked athletic but he didn't play athletic. His defense was never the same because he didn't have the same mobility.

I will just tend to disagree that Dwight was not good in Charlotte. He played 81 games, pretty good. We won 36 games, which for Hornets is above average.

Other centers on the team were
Zeller- played 33 games.
Hernangomez- played 21 games
Kaminsky? was a PF at that time.

And as I pointed out already, the advanced metrics were pretty good as well. His EPM from that year would be tied for #1 on our team this year. It is revisionist history to act like he was some huge disappointment that year.

Watching a 7 foot hulk attempt a crossover dribble drive and deliver an easy turnover was tough.
He loved doing that as he thought he could do EVERYTHING.
