So yeah, I feel like it has (again) been proven that Monk needs to be on the court for this team.

Hopefully he keeps shooting .450 from 3 and doesn’t regress back down below .300 . (His 3 pt% before going 9/13)

To be fair, he's never really had a consistent role or been able to get in a rhythm. He's no superstar but he could definitely be that microwave scorer he's always seemed like he could be

I'm pretty skeptical his shooting remains like this, its not like we have a tiny sample size of Monk being a crappy shooter. He's proven it very consistently. but if he can keep it at 36%+ he might actually be playable

Re: We Want the Monk: The Malik Monk Thread
Monk shot 40% from 3pt at Kentucky on high volume and has always had an excellent shooting form. Most players take a few years to get dialed into the NBA range. I'm guessing the 28% last season was a fluke. Hes probably not going to keep shooting 45% or whatever, but it would not be surprising at all if he turns out to be a pretty good 3pt shooter and that could open up his game a lot if that is the case.

Re: We Want the Monk: The Malik Monk Thread
Obviously he's not going to shoot 54.5% from three all year, but his shot looks so much better than last year. I really think he bulked a lot last year and it messed with his form. Everything was really flat last year. He has a much better arc on his shot, and it is so damn consistent.
I'm definitely buying on him as a high 30s 3P shooter this year. The one we were all hoping for when we drafted him.

Re: We Want the Monk: The Malik Monk Thread
I think we're just talking about his 3P% here, but last year his 2P% was outstanding considering his size/position. Shooting a mid 30's % would unlock his game even more. The next question will be do we resign him or not. If he ends up contributing on a regular basis the rest of the way, then I say yes and he shouldn't even cost that much.

Last season's Malik Monk plus the 3-point shooting we expected from him coming out of Kentucky is a better and more complete player than Rozier. If that's what we get from Malik this year, it's a no-brainer. Have to bring him back.
This is a good problem to have.

Monk is bigger and has more passing potential than Rozier, but Rozier is a bit better at defense and his shot is much more proven. Monk will probably be cheaper than Rozier and he fits LaMelo's timeline better. I think both are better suited as 6th man on most teams, but LaMelo's size and defensive potential opens up the possibility of starting an undersized SG if they can score well enough. Hopefully Monk keeps it up, but we'll see.

Monk needs to work on his man-to-man defense at the perimeter. Guys were dribbling by him too easily tonight. I think it's a matter of better anticipation and improving his overall technique, including use of hands.

I don't know if it's possible but I'd like to see us to keep both Monk and Rozier. Unless we find another true go to scorer to pair with Hayward, we need all the guys that can go supernova drop 40 every once in a while, even if it's off the bench.
I know neither have great size, but I'd much rather have Rozier (and potentially Monk) than someone like Danny Green, at least the way the roster is currently constructed. Now if we get a center that can score 20+ a game, I'd say go for that 3&D guy but until then, we need bucket getters

Re: We Want the Monk: The Malik Monk Thread
Monk's TS% is still leading the team at a ridiculous .682. That's largely because he is hitting .525 from three. His assists are respectable at 3.5 per 36 minutes.
Go, Monk, go!
Go, Monk, go!

We don't really have enough cap space to make a big signing and do much else and this upcoming free agent class sucks. Resigning Graham, Monk, and Zeller, on value contracts and then using exceptions + draft for depth would probably be a good outcome if the team continues to play well this season.
Zeller and Monk both have cap holds that are going to be bigger than their salaries going forward. I think they should be able to decline both of their cap holds and only pickup Grahams for 4 mil, then have enough space to resign Monk, Zeller, and another player in the 4-6 mil range, then go over the cap to resign Graham. Or, they can pick up Graham, Monk, and Zellers holds, which I think would open up the full MLE because it would put them over the cap and allow them to sign a player for like 9 mil. Either way, they could retain everyone, sign a depth piece and their draft picks, and only be like 10 mil over the cap at absolute maximum (likely less). Thats actually a solid position to be in considering how much we have tied up on Hayward and the Batum stretch. The Batum stretch is really going to put a squeeze on the cap situation over the next few years.
I'm guessing Monk will get 10-12 per year. Graham 8-10, and Zeller 6-8, based on their current play.

We have a player to build around now and he's 19. We don't need to be signing guys over the age of 25 to long-term deals. Or in other words yes to bringing Monk back (depending on the contract), no to Graham. We can bring Zeller back if we aren't able to sign anyone better.

Precisely why we need to trade Graham at the deadline so we don't lose him for nothing. If he starts to play well we can get a decent big for him and give Monk and Ball all the minutes Graham had and probably not lose much in return. Also Riller should be ready for depth minutes

Monk’s wingpsan is somewhere between 6’3 and 6’7 I wouldn’t say he’s bigger than Rozier who is both longer and heavier.
He shot .386 last February when he was getting in the groove before suspension so hopefully he keeps shooting around that level. I still think he’s long term a heat check guy off the bench with questionable efficiency that can randomly go off for 40 , but **** it I’m fine with that.

I fully agree, Graham needs to be traded. We needed his passing last year, but with LaMelo and Gordon on the team now it's a bonus more than anything. What we need is size and guys that can be dynamic off the ball.
If this front office does nothing and let's Graham or Monk walk then it will be proof that the Hornets organization still isn't good enough to take the next step. It's time for Mitch and MJ to stop being sentimental and set LaMelo up to lead this team to heights we haven't seen in 20 years.

Re: We Want the Monk: The Malik Monk Thread
I'd be totally fine with trading Graham, but I don't think he'll have much value in a trade and I think he'll be cheap to resign. I see very little downside to having a guy who fits the system and can slot in at backup PG for the foreseeable future if the cost is only like 8 mil or so per year.
I think we'd maybe get better value trading Rozier. Hes more expensive than Graham or Monk will be, and Monk can potentially fulfill the exact same role with more upside if things go well. I think hed probably get the best return in a trade right now of any of those three guards.

Re: We Want the Monk: The Malik Monk Thread
You're probably right about Graham not having a lot of trade value. That said we can't go into the offseason with both Monk and Graham needing new contracts while Rozier is still under contract. Kupchak needs to find a workable trade.
