He'd be a better Joakim Noah, i.e. an MVP caliber player.

I guess the comparison would be Tyrus Thomas with a brain

I think I'd rather have a big in the modern game with his speed/athleticism/short arms vs. a plodder with length. I actually think he fits really well into today's smaller NBA, having a 7-footer that can run the floor as well as Cody is a huge asset. And I'm confident his offensive game will develop now that he's actually playing his correct position.

Did you guys here Coach Cliff say that Cody set the 3rd most ball screens in the NBA this season?

3rd most in the entire NBA.

Wow.

Cody Zeller is the worst starting center in the league. Might be the worst back-up honestly. He is just awful at basketball. You can't be that soft, and that unskilled, horrible combo

I dont think he is the worst starting c in the league, definitely bottom 8 though. he would be a top 10 backup center i think.

his problems aren't really fixable, which is a problem that lowers his potential a lot.

Who would you say he's better than? I've seen every team play at least a game or two this season. The only guy he's close to is Hibbert

Went through and tracked Whiteside's performance while Cody was on the floor. In the 20 minutes Cody played, Whiteside scored 12 points (4 off of putbacks) and grabbed 6 boards (2 O boards). Video of Whiteside's FGM: http://on.nba.com/1Tfjvj7 I only see one attempt where Cody lost a one on one battle with Whiteside, on the O board that turned into a dunk.

In the 6 minutes where Whiteside was on the floor but Cody wasn't, he had 9 points and 5 boards.

Doesn't seem like Cody was the problem here, at least not as far as any inability on his part to check Whiteside. We just have him running around the perimeter and pulling him away from Whiteside, as Lamar documented.

The problem was the pick and roll scheme and execution, not 1v1 individual matchups

Agreed, which should render any discussion of Cody being a backup caliber big or not being able to handle Whiteside moot, at least as applied to this playoff series.

In the 20 minutes that Cody was on the floor, Cody had 9 points (on 3-4 FG) and 7 boards while Whiteside had 12 points (on 4-4 FG) and 6 boards. If anything I would say Cody should have played a lot more than he did.

Cody should be playing 40 minutes in this series or as much as he can stay out of foul trouble. Playing Al half the game is a losing bet. Cody is our best chance. But Cliff has to change those PR schemes or else it doesn't matter. And the wings + Marvin have to show a lot more effort and toughness.

So I guess he his knee is still hurting?

Otherwise, why did he play so little compared to Frank and Marv even tho he's played so well?

The Cody hatred is absurd. This guy can really play. Whiteside is a terrible matchup for him he's basically the biggest guy in the league right now. The nba is all about defending the pick and roll these days and he's one of the best equipped centers in the league to do so.

Hibbert is total garbage . Hes gonna have trouble finding a team where he Crack the rotation.

Plumlee and mahinmi are both solid. You don't need to be a big scorer to be an effective big man today. These guys are the anchor of the defense. The reason teams go small is so they can take advantage of big men who arent nimble.

A guy like Mozgov or okafor that isn't capable of defending on the perimeter or guarding pick and rolls is a huge liability defensively. these guys like vucevic and okafor or tough to win with. Utah isn't missing kanter. Cousins is overrated as well.

The thing is offense out of your big isn't that important because you can just up your guards usage to offset it. You can't easily lower your big man's importance defensively. You just want the guy to be a good screener and dive man they have to respect.

Biyombo is an elite defender/rebounder but his offense was just poor enough to negate a lot of what he gives you.

Cody is blossoming. He was a big reason we played so well post asb.

Hornets C Cody Zeller said he will get his nose fixed this offseason after breaking it a number of times. Said he can't breathe through it.

“#1 thing he can do to get better is become a more consistent perimeter shooter.” Coach Cliff on @CodyZeller

Someone lock MKG, Lamb, Cody, Frank, and Lin with Kemba and our shooting coach in a gym all damn summer.

I instantly remembered about this when I saw Yosemite's post. Somehow I also recall your post vividly.
