Soft? JT is not soft. He may have been overwhelmed last season, as most rookies are. You can't be soft and d up the way he does.

I can't disagree more I think he was very passive and soft..he was better on defense but overrated by a lot of the people here....I expect a major improvement this season

Love that the improvement comes with 20 extra pounds of muscle. That's sustainable. Shows hard work.

Second Look: Jeffery Taylor
By Bradford Doolittle | ESPN.com
Jeffery Taylor has been one of the most impressive players of the summer league and is enjoying the kind of week the Bobcats had hoped to get from Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. Taylor is among the scoring leaders in Vegas and has greatly enhanced his all-around offensive repertoire after a rookie season in which he functioned primarily as a floor runner and spot-up shooter. He's shown a consistent ability to get into the lane, often when initiating the offense, and finishes well. Taylor is quick and athletic on defense, and finishes explosively in transition. Best of all, Taylor and Cody Zeller have not only both played well this week, they have developed a terrific chemistry playing together.

More recognition, Amin Elhassan, ESPN:
Taylor has continued to develop his game for several years now. I was shocked he fell to the second round of the draft (albeit the very first pick of the round), because he brings so many desirable traits to the table: prototypical size for a wing, strong frame, good athleticism, good feel and IQ and an ability to knock down the perimeter jumper -- something that he wasn't able to do earlier in his collegiate career. The knock has been on Taylor's reticence to be more assertive offensively, along with his inability to make a "second move" when putting the ball on the floor (lacking the creativity to get out of a jam via the dribble).

Fast-forward to Vegas, and Taylor has taken those criticisms to heart, driving relentlessly to the basket and finishing around the rim with great verve and strength. He's averaging more than 20 points per game on almost 15 FGA per game, unheard-of aggression levels based on his past. He's shown an ability to put the ball on the floor and make that second move when the defense adjusts to stop his initial attack. Charlotte wisely has Taylor locked in for a third season, which means it'll have full Bird rights on him when he eventually becomes a restricted free agent in 2015. That will come in handy, as he represents one of the great value deals in the NBA.

It's definitely encouraging to see him play with his hair on fire. I'll maintain what I said in the General Summer League Thread about McLemore, which holds true for all players. If you're playing well in SL, take it with a grain of salt, but if you play bad, then it is definitely a red flag.

Taylor has been playing incredibly well, but I'm not about to trust the guy so much as to not bring Henderson back on a contract and give him the starting role. I remember being somewhat impressed by JT in the SL last year and thought he would be a good member of our team's second squad. As we all know though, Viking started to look lost right around the quarter pole last year, missing most of his shots and pretty much being a non-factor all the way around.

Like I said, I'm definitely happy for JT, but I'm going to temper my expectations this time around. Would I love to see it translate into the reg season? Hell yes, but I'm that way with all of our guys. If he can translate this game to the regular season, we are going to have one hell of a backup 2 who can play stifling defense and hit the big shots.
Mike Malone was never given a fair chance in Sacramento, and Ranadive will soon come to regret that, when he's on top of the WC inevitably contending somewhere

Not sure he has the ball handling or passing to actually be like Parsons but if he can be as productive that be great. 2nd round picks with better talent.

I thought Derrick Brown was going to be that guy. Taylor absolutely is though. He's arguably already better than a good portion of our 1st rounders and even lotto picks.

I've always liked Derrick Brown and still expect him to make an NBA comeback and find a role on a good team. Seems like he's staying in Europe for the time being where he had a decent season last year.
(I love the stat line he had in one Eurocup game - 37mins, 34pts, 14/17FG, 3/3 3pts, 3/5 FTs, 5rebs, 1ast, 3stls, 0 turnovers. that's efficient)

As for Taylor, he is without a doubt our best second round pick.

I'm so excited for MVT, he looks like the Vandy version again with an extra 15 pounds.

Excellent pick from Rich Cho.

Bradford Doolittle of ESPN had this to say of Jeff Taylor (insider req'd)

"Taylor was one of the most impressive players of the Vegas summer league, showing a fully array of skills that could portend a breakout sophomore NBA season. He led the Bobcats with 20.3 points per game and helped Charlotte to an appearance in the league semifinals, though Taylor and the team's other contract players sat out a loss to Golden State. Taylor's ability to create havoc in the lane off the dribble was the standout part of his performance, and while it won't be as easy against a regular NBA roster, it's progress. He's an excellent athlete and runs the court well, finishing breakouts with an array of highlight reel dunks."

"Taylor's second-year projection is for a .394 winning percentage, which leaves him a little below replacement level. However, he looks like a player who will get over replacement level and then some. He can fill several roles for the Bobcats -- as a starting wing in the event Gerald Henderson leaves as a restricted free agent, as a sixth man or even as a position-sharing arrangement with Kidd-Gilchrist."

Hope he keeps it up. He had a pretty good SL last year so I'm not holding my breath but I think he'll at least be more of a factor this year.
