Just curious what the general thoughts are here on this subject since this place leans left for the most part

I don't have a problem with it.

But, (im definitely not an expert in anything military). Can a female physically handle ALL military occupations? Kind of something someone would want to know before you trust your life with another human being.

For the first time in U.S. military history, as long as they qualify and meet specific standards, the secretary said women will be able to contribute to the Defense Department mission with no barriers at all in their way.

Seven Guidelines

1. Implementation will be pursued with the objective of improved force effectiveness.

2. Leaders must assign tasks and jobs throughout the force based on ability, not gender.

3. Equal opportunity likely will not mean equal participation by men and women in all specialties, and there will be no quotas.

4. Studies conducted by the services and SOCOM indicate that on average there are physical and other differences between men and women, and implementation will take this into account.

5. The department will address the fact that some surveys suggest that some service members, men and women, will perceive that integration could damage combat effectiveness.

6. Particularly in the specialties that are newly open to women, survey data and the judgment of service leaders indicate that the performance of small teams is important.

7. The United States and some of its closest friends and allies are committed to having militaries that include men and women, but not all nations share this perspective.

I assume that means as physically fit as required to carry out the said task. Basically saying if there's a man and a women that are both equally qualified and fit for the position, you don't say no to the woman because of her gender. My knowledge on the subject pretty much ends at this article, knowing very little about how the military operates, yadda yadda, but that's how it sounds to me.

MKG, the (well, one of) issue is/would be the lowering of standards and/or special accommodation for females attempting to make it through. There has already been a few females who made it through ranger school "at the same (but not really) standards". Unfortunately, the battlefield isn't the place to be performing social experiments. This doesn't even cover the logistical issues of field conditions or intra-soldier relationships, or any of the other potential issues that really make this sort of decision short-sighted.

And Liver, I'd honestly say no. I mean, maybe somewhere between 1-5% could for short periods of time, but not for the long haul type of physical abuse those guys have to deal with. You'd be looking for the absolute pinnacle of female physicality, and the vast majority of them are professional athletes, not potential soldiers.

this would be the real issue if true, I agree. My idea was that the less physically fit people (men or women, doesn't matter) would do less physically taxing tasks for the military, but really I have no idea how that all works. I'm with you that if they're lowering standards in order to appeal to a demographic, that's not smart.

Equating that to something in my field: I'm about to graduate with a BS in computer engineering. Most jobs I'm applying to require a BS in computer engineering from an accredited university. This would be the equivalent to a company suddenly lowering their requirements to an associates degree in IT from the community college in your neighbor's backyard so that they don't discriminate against people that can't afford the tuition of a four-year college.

I am not playing another PC game before finals because I'm worried that iRacing is going to blow me away and I'm going to spend way too much time playing it. I've heard great things about it. Can't wait to try it out.

Related: a buddy had me download "Asphalt 8" on Android and holy crap that game has better graphics and physics than most of the PC racing games I've ever played.

I bought a cheap little 100$ steering wheel pedal set from game stop that hooks into my PC to play it, and damn is it realistic. The graphics are meh, but its hard as hell. As realistic as it gets.

I used to be really big into iRacing for 2 or 3 years, haven't used it much since coming to school though. No doubt it's as good as it gets for a sim, only downside is the massive black hole it puts in your wallet.

I live in Mill Spring right now. Out in the middle of freaking no where. Literally 10 minutes from the new Tryon Equestrian Center, which is freaking unreal by the way. The owners of that place knocked on the door of my fiances parents 2 years ago and offered them 350k for their house. They agreed like idiots. Could have gotten so much more. Was their lottery ticket.

My dad sold 35 acres in Litchfield, CT back in the 80s. The home and land last sold for 2.3 million. He still drives by it and cries inside. He had horses and goats. His family farmed back in Portugal so that's where he learned. He went back to his island and said they use all geothermal and solar because the Azores are so remote.

When I sell my Charlotte home I want 5 acres in the mountains, undeveloped. My buddy is a builder. I can probably for 350 month on a mortgage set up an off grid a-frame 600 square ft with loft, centrally located wood stove, shaded area for hot summers, wrap around porch, solar panel. I plan to plant potatoes, nut trees and dates if I can pull it off. I also want to raise hens and meat rabbits. I plan to trade food with Asheville farmers like hickory nut gap farms. I didn't think I could get out of my Charlotte neighborhood this early with sufficient equity but it's looking great right now. Charlotte is growing so fast. I haven't been there much to notice since I went back to school to switch careers. I'm excited to get back to Asheville and get off the grid.

Thats awesome man. This is essentially the same as my long term goal.
