I imagine the only thing worse than being bobcats coach is being a go between for dwight kobe and dantoni. So i can see why he took the job

Bulls fan here. been following Charlotte closer over the past few years.
i'm really curious to see how this hire works out for the Cats/Hornets.
he was endorsed by both Van Gundy's and Thibs. supposedly he's a Thibs type of coach so i would imagine he will make the team play tough defense and develop a mentality of physical play.

I got...

It is a two-year deal with a team option for a third year. It is worth $6 million if he is there for all three years.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal has not been announced.

At least the Thibodeau comparison from the Van Gundy's sound encouraging.

I'm good with this hire. Plenty of NBA experience with the right people. Like the fact he is strong with defense. Like the fact he will try to get Ewing as an asst. I think Ewing would do wonders for Biyombo's improvement. Not going to complain about this hire one bit.

Fair to say the systems he's been in were more pick n' roll vs. the new drive and 3 offenses? PNR probably suits our current roster better?

My only hypothetical guesses on why Clifford became the right hire is because we couldn't get permission from Memphis to interview Joerger with Hollins' future there in the air, Malone was waiting on the availability of the Clippers job, Snyder was sniffling, and we kind of panicked after watching Hornacek go to Phoenix.

Saw where this was preemptive by Charlotte also. Clifford was to have a 2nd interview with the Bucks and the Hornets did not want to take a chance he was offered that job. Shows that they really like him and wanted him to be our HC.

I remember SVG vouching for Ewing as a head coach too so I don't know what to make out of it.

I asked Ramona Shelburne, Lakers beat writer....

@ramonashelburne: @HOTRODHART really well liked by players, defensive minded, good personality over all

@ramonashelburne: @HOTRODHART I think he's been ready for a head gig for a while. Bobcats situation is tough for anyone tho

I would not have called Mike Dunlap a defensive minded coach in the least.

Google search "Mike Dunlap" & "defense" together, and you'll see that he has a swell reputation for being a innovative defensive mind, for what ever it's worth. To me it's worth nothing, because the Bobcats defense was chaotic under his watch.

Steve Clifford's Profile

Background: Clifford first started out in the NBA ranks as an advance scout for the New York Knicks (2000-01) before moving up as an assistant coach (2001-03) under Don Nelson. He then worked as an assistant for Jeff Van Gundy with the Houston Rockets (2003-2007) and for Stan Van Gundy with the Orlando Magic (2007-2012).

Prior to his professional coaching experience, Clifford spent more than a decade in college coaching. That included a four-year stint as Adelphi's head coach, where he became the first coach in school history to have consecutive 20-win seasons. Clifford also guided Adelphi to NCAA Division II tournament appearances in all four years. Clifford also had assistant coaching gigs at St. Anselm’s College in New Hampshire, Fairfeld University, Boston University and Siena College.

Style: According to Haynes' report, Clifford models himself after Bulls Coach Tom Thibodeau and considers both the Van Gundy brothers as mentors. While Clifford was an assistant the past four years, the Magic finished in the top 10 defensively each season.

Clifford was often viewed in his assistant coaching roles as both a mentor and teacher.

lots of déjà vu from last year. replace george karl with van gundy, and replace metro state with a maine high school, and you can just write the press releases from a template.
