Re: The Best Charlotte NBA Player of All-Time
Dilworth Bracket
1. Larry Johnson vs 16. Earl Cureton
2. Eddie Jones vs 15. Ricky Pierce (Pierce goes on one of his scoring tears)
3. Dell Curry vs 14. Bismack Biyombo
4. Kemba Walker vs 15. Jamaal Magloire
(It's hard for me to small point guards being able to win tough big guys in a one-on-one. Big Cat should be able to beat up Kemba)
5. Bobby Phills vs 12. Nazr Mohammed
6. Elden Campbell vs 11. Ramon Sessions
7. Johnny Newman vs 10. JR Reid
8. Boris Diaw vs 9. DJ Augustin (this would be fun to watch. Diaw scores in all kinds of nifty ways using his size and playing with his back to the basket)
Ballentyne Bracket
1. Alonzo Mourning vs 16. Sean May
2. Muggsy Bogues vs 15. Jared Dudley (Dudley keeps up by making long range shots but Muggsy's pest defense is too much to handle)
3. Steven Jackson vs 14. Tyrus Thomas
4. Kendall Gill vs 13. Melvin Ely
5. Jason Richardson vs 12. Eddie Robinson
6. Derrick Coleman vs 11. David Wingate (does drunk Coleman show up? lol)
7. Gerald Henderson vs 10. Brevin Knight (Gerald abuses the smaller Knight with his mid-range post game)
8. Armen Gilliam vs 9. Raja Bell
Southpark Bracket
1. Glen Rice vs 16. Adam Morrison (two pointers galore)
2. Gerald Wallace vs 15. Chucky Brown
3. Kelly Tripucka vs 14. Lee Nailon
4. Vlade Divac vs 13. Brad Miller
(Brad pulls of the upset in the 4-13 match-up, even if the difference between the players isn't so big. I feel like this could go either way. If they played best-of-7, it would go 7 games. Oh and Miller was a pretty darn good center, feels like he's a bit underrated.)
5. Emeka Okafor vs 12. Primoz Brezec
6. Rex Chapman vs 11. Matt Carroll
7. Kurt Rambis vs 10. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (a tough battle with both guys attacking the rim, MKG wins it thanks to his superior athleticism)
8. Robert Reid vs 9. Scott Burrell
Myers Park Bracket
1. Baron Davis vs 16. Michael Holton
2. Jamal Mashburn vs 15. Kareem Rush
3. Anthony Mason vs 14. Byron Mullens (lol. Mason would eat Mullens alive)
4. David Wesley vs 13. Eddie Johnson (Johnson uses his size to win this one)
5. Raymond Felton vs 12. Walter Herrmann (is there anyone who would actually vote for Felton over the beloved Herrmann!?)
6. PJ Brown vs 11. Matt Geiger
7. Hersey Hawkins vs 10. Kenny Anderson (I don't know whether Hawkins is good enough to create off the dribble for himself in a one-on-one game against a good point guard)
8. Kenny Gattison vs 9. Mike Gminski (G-Man!!!)
1. Larry Johnson vs 16. Earl Cureton
2. Eddie Jones vs 15. Ricky Pierce (Pierce goes on one of his scoring tears)
3. Dell Curry vs 14. Bismack Biyombo

Re: The Best Charlotte NBA Player of All-Time
I do remember asking this in the general section of the board but nobody replied, so..
did anybody follow the Hornets after their departure enough to tell me about Jamaal Magloire? perhaps, fats? could you at least share about his days in Charlotte?
The year he was an all-star (2003-04), he finished the season (the last 26 regular season games) with 17.3ppg, 12.3rpg and 1.2bpg. Was he a contract year guy? He played 23 games next season and never posted stats close to these afterwards, while getting paid 25mil for the next 3 years because of that late season outburst.
I can't say that I've seen the Hornets Jamaal Magloire but he was not even close to a 17/12 guy later in his career from what I've seen.

He seemed truly awful after that. Poor mans Diop

I don't know whether he deserves to be compared to the legend that is Gana Diop.

Re: The Best Charlotte NBA Player of All-Time
@ Lamar - i'm glad you enjoyed the post. i had a feeling it would be right up your alley.
re: geiger - he was "hurt" in the playoffs one year and basically sat out with an "injury". dave cowens basically called him a pansy for not playing. gieger pissed off the enter organization by leaving a playoff game at halftime and going to the crown club, which was a bar/restaurant in the arena. i seem to remember people saying he had drink while there. needless to say cowens and bob bass went nuts on him and he was out of charlotte the next year. we really needed him in those playoffs.
here is an article about it

re: mashburn - lots of hornet fans still are bitter about mashburn missing so much time during the last year in charlotte (the lame duck year) mash got vertigo and couldnt play. it was frustrating for fans. i think many questioned just how bad it was. who knows. he played 82 games the next year in new orleans.

re: magloire - he was big and awkward. seem to remember him being a very good rebounder, especially on the offensive glass. he had a big butt and knew how to get position. dude also had a claw for a hand and would do these one-handed dunks in traffic. i still think its a joke he was an all-star.
re: brad miller being ranked #13 - he was only in charlotte for two years, his first two seasons as an undrafted rookie. he was a very solid backup by his second season, but was stuck behind a stacked frontcourt of derrick coleman, anthony mason and elden campbell. he just didnt have the chance to get enough minutes to be ranked much higher. but #13 is probably a little low, no doubt.
re: herrmann - you have to know i had walter with the upset in his matchup vs felton. the story goes like this...
felton vs herrmann
felton showed up to the arena with a bag of fast food (two double, bacon cheeseburgers and large fries to be exact). eating fast food before each game was something felton learned from his close buddy sean may in college. herrmann on the other hand said "body is temple, no bad food go here" and he pulled up his shirt to reveal his six pack abs which were golden from an earlier tanning session. it is also little known fact that herrmann was a relentless trash talker (mostly in spanish) and his talking started from the opening whistle. he had a translator that would stand courtside and repeat his insults to his opponents in english. "your no match for me, i am god in argentina. i have gold medal. you only have fat belly and breath of chupacabra". but felton did his best to ignore the taunts building a 9 to 4 lead. herrmann sensing defeat pulled out one last trick, a bet that felton could not refuse. "we play one hand tied behind back. if you win, i cut off locks of gold. if i win, i get sex time from your girlfriend" (winks at felton's lady in the stands). felton agrees to the bet. how could he not agree. he only needs to score two points and the reward of seeing herrmann with no hair would be the greatest prize of all. herrmann knew the risk he was talking. his hair was the source of his mythical powers, but he also knew that he was the second greatest one-handed basketball player that has ever lived after doctor j. it was a gamble worth taking. soon both players had their hands left hands tied tied to the back of their jerseys. felton's first shot was an airball three feet short. the english translator shouted "poor boy, not strong like man". herrmann took the rebound and soared over felton for a beautiful one-handed finger roll, a one-handed reverse layup from under the basket, a one-handed floater, a one-handed two-pointer and a one-handed tomahawk dunk to end the game 11-9. felton hung his head in embarrassment as he watched herrmann walk out of the arena with herrmann's magical right hand on the butt of his girlfriend who was off for sex time with the one-handed bandit.

As for Matt Geiger, the Charlotte center is still bothered by a sore hamstring but continues to make news off the court.
Cowens is frustrated about Geiger missing the last four regular-season games and all but five minutes of the playoff series. On Wednesday, general manager Bob Bass said he learned that Geiger, who was in street clothes during the series opener, left his teammates at halftime and went to the Crown Club, a private restaurant in the Charlotte Coliseum.
"I found out from some people up at the Crown Club," Bass said. "The rules call for him to be in the locker room or on the bench. It's not acceptable."
Bass said he had discussed the incident with Geiger but would not disclose if the player had been fined. Geiger would not speak with reporters after the practice in Charlotte.

Re: The Best Charlotte NBA Player of All-Time
geez, what a pussy. missing out on playoff action for a team that made the second round because of a sore hamstring.
as for the Felton-Herrmann duel, I expected Walter to beguile Felton into using his only hand for eating rather than playing basketball.

Yeah, Big Cat was just a contract player. I nearly committed suicide when Charlotte drafted him b/c the only redeemable thing I remember Magloire doing in college was putting Wojo in some Jiu Jitsu move one game. He actually wasn't that bad a pick and gave us good rebounding and defense but yeah, he never should have been an All Star.

Re: The Best Charlotte NBA Player of All-Time
In terms of my feel o meter, based on a formula of impact and skill:
1. Mourning
2. Johnson
3. Rice
4. Baron Davis
5. Gerald Wallace
6. Mashburn
7. Walker
8. Bogues
9. Curry
10. Okafor
11. Anthony Mason
Players who will/should crack the top 10 in the next 5 years if they stay here : MKG, Batum. I think MKG is by far a superior player to Okafor, but he's missed too much time recently.
Divac, Gill, Rambis, Coleman, Eddie Jones, Stephen Jackson, Chapman simply weren't here long enough/didn't make a longer lasting impact

Nope, he may have had the best 3-4 month stretch of the Bobcat era, but outside of that, he was underwhelming.

Best Hornets of All Time - Let me do this by individual best years or peaks

7. Gerald Wallace (2006-2010)
8. Muggsy Bogues (early 90s)
9. Eddie Jones (late 90s)

Re: The Best Charlotte NBA Player of All-Time
In all fairness to the others, Kemba's rank at #5 is a bit premature since he has only played at this level for parts of this year and maybe a few months here and there in previous years. Crash played at a high level for several years, but if I am going by best peaks/best years I'd have to put this year by Kemba better than Crash's best year.

Waiting for someone to bring up the Charlotte franchise records thread... we've broken a lot of records this season. We've broken/tied our previous 3PM team record probably close to 10 times, Kemba broke the single game scoring record, we may finish 1st in our division for the first time ever, etc
