Plus MKG was hitting that mid range J at a pretty nice clip towards the end of the season - so he has it in him.

no one said he was going to be broken forever but he really wants to be come a good shooter his shot needs to be rebuilt...he will never been a constant with that hitch shooting on the way down

See, I disagree with this.

It's not about technique, it's about repetition and consistency. It doesn't matter how a shot looks, so long as it always looks the same (and goes in!!).

I think MKG can get better with repetitions but I dont think he will ever really be good with only repetition. I have been wrong before and thats why mark price is here

Marion is a career 33% 3 point shooter and his shot is ugly as can be. I think with some work MKG will be able to be better than Marion. To got with his slashing and passing he should be just fine.

If Marion can shoot with that ugly ass form, I see no reason why MKG shouldn't be able to be a half decent shooter himself, ugly form or not. I would prefer that his jumper gets completely re-done from the ground up.

Its next to impossible to completely restructure someone's form after years of doing it, but his form will definitely have some improvement by next season.

That hitch is all they need to get rid of. He gets good elevation and starts the shot ok he just needs to adjust his release point and drop the hitch. I think that will be easier than trying to change the guys who shoot it from teh hip.

Now that the draft is coming up, I need to catch up with what has been going on with the Bobcats. I saw this thread and assumed it was a joke thread pointing fun at Ewing's "Assistant Head Coach" title, heh. I didn't realize Mark Price actually joined the staff. Well, that's good to hear.

Cool news. I don't have much confidence in the idea that he can completely rework someone's shooting form just because he was a fantastic shooter himself. Second nature is hard to teach. Career specialists can't externalize what they've internalized.

That is an excellent point but he can get them in the gym and make them shoot until they can't raise their arms any longer.

Some can some can't. Teaching is a skill that some have even if they are good at something and some people never get it. I hope he has the ability to teach to go along with his form.

The challenge with Kidd-Gilchrist is more fundamental. He arrived in the NBA with a jump shot loaded with flaws: Sidespin off his wrist, a release after the top of his jump. Kidd-Gilchrist attempted nine 3-pointers last season, making two. An effective NBA small forward needs to be a better shooter.

“His wrist and his elbow is his biggest thing right now. But he’s never been taught good footwork and balance,’’ said Price. “Most people believe shooting starts from the waist up and I’m a believer it starts with the feet. If you don’t start right, it’s hard to finish right.’’

Price says Kidd-Gilchrist has always gotten by on athleticism and skills in other areas, so the shooting was never really addressed until he turned pro. There’s no quick fix.

“I love his attitude -- we get up shots before and after practice every day. He knows that’s a weakness in his game right now,’’ Price said. “It’s not going to be an overnight process. He’d like for it to be fixed tomorrow, but he’s going to have to be patient and trust me. I have no doubt he’ll get better.’’

I saw this write-up while looking at summer league highlights. fits in well with the post above

John Schuhmann, NBA.com: I will be scrutinizing Michael Kidd-Gilchrist’s jump shot. He’s got the makings of a great defender and playmaker, but has the ugliest shooting form that I’ve ever seen, with a turn to the side and a nasty hitch. It needs to be totally broken down and built back up again. Right now, the results don’t matter. But I’m curious to see if the work he’s been putting in with new Bobcats assistant Mark Price has produced a noticeable difference in his form.

I hope we see a new shooting form during summer league play. I'm not fussed if its not falling much straight away. But it would be great to see Price's efforts showing in games this early.

to that i would say there's only so much he can do in a couple of weeks, which is how long he's been on the job. there are some vids of MKG shooting on the team site, and his form is straightened out a *little bit*, and his shot is sped up a *little bit*, but i would peg him as a work in progress for now and definitely through summer league at minimum.

Asking this question to the masses here because I'm curious about this. What was offensive game like before his college days? What made him excel on offense during those times, posting up, driving to the basket?

That, and just being much more athletic and physical than everyone else.

most of the prep/AAU footage i've seen, he's a front court player. posting up, offensive rebounds, still excelling on transition. 2-3 jumpshots per game.

Yes, MKG was a powerforward in highschool. That is a big part of the reason he is struggling with his shot. He has only been playing on the wing for two years.

His coaches growing up should be beaten for not correcting his form way, way sooner.
