Anyone know if anyone in our staff has history with Taj? Surprised for them to make a vet experience hire and have it be someone they haven’t worked with before.

Looked for overlap, but don't see anything. Some of the staff have been in OKC, but not while Gibson was.

Not an exciting move, but hopefully he matures the team's knuckleheads.

Could be a cliff connection via the van gundy thibbs tree

Taj feels like a guy that Cliff has probably been begging this team to sign for a decade. It's his ideal Jason maxiel.

Love getting vet leadership and a culture driver here. Feel like we still need to make a trade that consolidates a couple of these guards into one good player, create some talented wing depth. Not much behind Miller; Cody did OK when he got back but how is his health? Grant and Miles can play there, probably some Green also.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

I don't hate it. He's a locker-room leader, something this team has needed for years.

Not a log committment and could possibly be used as salary matching in a trade. I think some inseason trades are a possiblity. I think the guys safe from being traded are probably LaMelo, Brandon, Mark, Grant, Salaun, Josh Green and one of Miccic/Mann.

Cody, Miles, Nicks Richards ands Smith Jr, Reggie Jackson, the other one of Miccic/Mann I would not be surprised to see traded. Just feels like they are going to continue the new ownership/gm we need to get in our guys.

I liked Taj… about 8-9 years ago. I remember us discussing (on this forum) trading for Bobby Portis or Taj from the Bulls. At this point we should have signed Josh McRoberts, bring him out of his 7 year retirement. I mean he’s two years younger and does the same thing (provides leadership). Then we could let the legend of McBob retire here. Oh well.

Lots of angst ITT about a guy that is pretty clearly not meant to play. It is fine to sign a confident old guy who can speak from experience about being an actual pro and who hopefully will keep the lean drinking, blunt smoking and hoochie chasing to a minimum. If he needs to play much it is because Mark is still hurt and we are going to suck anyway. In which case the tank is on......

This concludes any notion of jousting Nick Richards from his post as C2. Nick Richards is C2. If Mark goes down, we are in for another collapse/**** show.
It has been written...

Meh. Just doing something that is a whole lot of nothing. Maybe he can be lamelos huckleberry. Idk we need adults in the room but this ain't it. He's like a lesser version of Haslem, and even he overstayed.

i remember wanting Taj a few years ago, i assume he is a locker room leader for him to be signed now. he could be one of the more important signs if he can help set the tone.

Yeah he has no previous connection to the team like Haslem and the Heat. He's not an influential enough player at this stage of his career to call anyone out for slacking off or acting like an idiot.

It's very meh but whatever - wasting an end of the bench roster spot with a one year vet min isn't going to be a factor when all is said and done.

I disagree with this, to a point. Younger guys often look up to players who've been around a long time even if they weren't MVP-caliber. It depends on the player's philosophy and personality. Bouknight would've not even made eye contact or looked up. But not every player is like him.

Any realistic option left on the market wasn't going to play more than Nick Richards.
Honestly Richards is still a top 15 backup in the NBA despite all the hate he gets here.
... but people dislike him because he wasn't a good starter when he needed to be... shocker this happens with 1 guy every year on this board lol

Taj can play 200 mins this year in case of emergency, but his value is going to be helping Mark, Nick better understand how they should communicate on defense and just other cagey stuff that young players don't know. I would much rather give mins to a guy like Jake Stephens then sign someone like Mo Bamba who we know is just a body at this point.

“When I was talking to the guys I was like, ‘What do you need me to do?’” Gibson said. “They were like, ‘We just need you to be Taj. Just be Taj, man.’ And every time I get a job or I get the phone call, it’s kind of surreal because they just want me to be myself. And that means a lot.

“I’m just trying to get the team, get the young guys to grow. Just try to bring as much of hard inspiration as I can.”

From a culture perspective, I like bringing the Marvs, Kembas, Tajs, Seths into the fold. It shows they value vet guys who stick around, and reward them with post playing career opportunities.

It also shows they're (at least on face value) committed to developing a professional, grown up culture. We'll see if that translates to the kids but at least the effort appears to be in place
