I disagree, and in fact if you assume they budgeted on Mark being healthy I think we started the season with the deepest roster we've had in some time. We had a strong center rotation for the first time in forever, had solid wing depth, had multiple facilitators, and thought we had solid PG depth.
Turns out when you take out large chunks of your rotation for long periods of time, it becomes very difficult to look like an organized basketball team.
I don't think they had top tier talent and I don't think they were aggressively pushing to make the playoffs, but they did not start the season with large gaps in the rotation.

Very clearly lacking depth 1-3 still at this point in the season, we did a terrible job of trying to find decent replacements. The only position that looks half way decent is Center when Mark is available, everything else is quite terrible.
Overall this reflects negatively on Peterson more than Lee, however I think Lee is just as much at fault for not really getting anything above expectation from a single player except maybe Moussa. We cycled in Rhoden, Wong, Simpson, Jeffries, Payton, Wendell and Baugh... do you think any of these 7 players have shown they should be viewed as top 12 player moving forward?
Is Okogie out for the year? I thought he might be back soon?
Funny enough you mentioned the center rotation is the only one that's half way decent and that happened by accident due to the Mark trade being rescinded, so hard to even give them credit for that. Also Nurk is absolutely cooked, but his $19m expiring should be helpful at some point.
We have gone more seasons than I can remember ignoring PG and C depth and this season our front court depth hinged on Miles, Grant and Salaun. So one undersized PF who is more like a SF, one solid vet bench player and one unplayable 19 year old who may never learn how to play basketball at an NBA level.
Going into the season with Micic as PG1, especially when viable options were available for the minimum in free agency was a fail. Having Josh Green as your STARTING SG is a fail, never mind what sits behind that (luckily NSJ is finally looking decent) and then having to play guys like Daquan Jefferies serious mins is laughable. Dude was a toss in to facilitate a trade for another team.
Jeff never had any intention of competing and I suspect the plan all along was to see if magic happened with this awful roster and when it was clear it wasn't (or injuries occurred, or both) that they could just slow play it and tank in a really strong draft.
Given he was willing to move Mark, what was his follow up plan to that? We just went a decade without having a serious C rotation and he promptly shipped off C1/C2 within a month of each other. Does he have his eyes set on a C in the draft because he messed up and didn't take Clingan who was the most obvious choice ever for reasons I won't keep rehashing?
Question becomes - does the team WANT to compete with the young core of players they have or do they want to blow it up and shape the roster into something different from what they inherited? I think we have 2-3 of the best young players we have ever had in LaMelo/Miller/Mark but they won't carry the team alone at age 21-23. My opinion is they can win next year with the assets they have if they want to. Or Jeff is just that terrible at talent evaluation (Salaun is such a red flag) and we're totally dependent on getting lucky in the lottery.
