Hawes was on JJ Redick's Vertical pod yesterday. Haven't heard either one yet though.

Hawes was on JJ Redick's Vertical pod yesterday. Haven't heard either one yet though.

Came to post these, heard the Hawes one yesterday and will check out the Clifford one later. The Hawes one was pretty cool, as both he and JJ had a shared experience of being drafted by a team, then after 3.5 years being traded at the deadline and then weren't brought back by the teams that traded for them.

You can tell Redick takes Orlando and Milwaukee's handling of the situation personally. Hawes talks about being in limbo because of LeBron's return, and living in an apartment for 4 years and then one day just never going back due to the trade. Very interesting to hear the player's side.

JJ has the voice for radio but needs to lay off the heavy breathing when his guest is talking. You can also tell he's not used to being the interviewer as there are a lot of "before you answer that, let me tell you about my experience..." and at one point Hawes basically starts interviewing him as a result. Still, very good listen.

Oh and apparently there are 3 different Vertical podcasts. Thought they just shared host duties but Woj, Mannix, and Redick all have their own thing.

I mostly listened to a couple of the Woj ones, mainly because until yesterday I didn't realize there were 3 different Vertical podcasts...but they didn't really catch my interest overall. He gets some good guests, but I don't know, the conversations didn't grab me that much (to be fair I've only heard like 3). I mean he talked with a shoe connoisseur for an hour, just not my thing I guess. I do however enjoy the "insider" segments he closes with. Bobby Marks and Jonathon Givony were great and informative.

I haven't listened to Mannix yet, and I only listened to the Redick one with Hawes. As I detailed above, I really enjoyed that one. Hearing the players' perspective is always intriguing to me, especially knowing they obsess over Hoopshype and twitter like everyone else (ok...me) during the deadline and free agency.

JJ Redick one is really good, he had a couple now, and I really enjoyed it, he is pretty straight forward, honest and he usually get some players as guest. Really different point of view, quite different from most other NBA podcast.

Woj was less impressive though.

Completely agree with you on Woj. The conversations seem to lack something, perhaps, he needs some of Simmons's energy and animation during the chats.

As far as the guests are concerned, the front office people and coaches have been more interesting that then players. I don't like the fact that he basically doesn't ask any open-ended questions. Everything fits some narrative which then gives the guest the option to either clarify it or disagree with it. Naturally, active players give politically correct answers to almost everything since they have to think about their brand and their next contract thus the conversations get kinda dull with them just complying to Woj.

This is an actual question he asked Gallinari:

Danilo, when you came into the league things came, I don't wanna say they came easy for you, you worked hard to become the player you were, but you get drafted by the Knicks, sixth overall. You come to a team in New York where you guys had some success early with you and Amare Stoudamire and that group and, obviously, you were a part of that trade to Denver for Carmelo Anthony and then had success there. When you look back on your career does it seem like so much came quickly to you and the injuries forced you to get a better perspective on how hard life can be?

Hard for me to imagine a scenario where he strays off and just doesn't agree with Woj's assessment. Especially since English isn't his first language.

That being said, it's not like anybody else is getting these guys as regular guests for an hour-long conversation or that anyone gets fantastic answers from them (at least from the majority of them). I just think that the podcasts with front office people he has released so far have been more insightful and interesting since then they touch on the lives of those people, something we are less likely to know than the career arch of a player.

Thus I think it would be better if he wouldn't keep up this pace of a player per week.

One thing's for sure though, the podcast episodes display how connected Woj is. There's a reason why he's the number one reporter out there and why he can get all these people on his pod so regularly. He seemingly has some connection with each one of his guests, which is truly remarkable. They will randomly touch on the fact that in '97, Woj talked with the guest while he was an assistant coach in a college or smth.

Redick has been off to a good start. Perhaps, players feel more freely when talking with a fellow player. I'll continue listening to his pods. As for Mannix, I'm starting to feel a bit over-whelmed by the amount of podcasts there are out there (ironic that I would say so). I'm subscribed now because of coach Cliff but I feel like Mannix will have to impress me in order for me to listen to him regularly. Nothing against him but he's just a lesser name in a market where many people have a good podcast.

i hope you guys watch coach clifford's interviews before and after the Pelicans' game... it showed he knew the game inside out, knew players in the league very well, very articulate, a very good communicator...
He should be in one of the panels in MIT Sloan Conference for sports analytics, he is so knowledgable...

There has been a lot of talk about the improvement of some of our key players, and rightfully so, but when are those posters who have continually and relentlessly heaped on Coach Cliff over the past few years finally going to step up and admit they were wrong about him?

We are the real deal and a big, a HIGE reason, for that is our coach.

He's obviously a players coach as well as being an X's and O's coach as well as being an offensive coach as well as being a defensive coach as well as showing versatility and a willingness to experiment.

He's like a mini-Pop.

How quickly can we extend his extension? I want him here long term. Very, very long term.

I have been very impressed with Clifford this year, he has definitely improved.

the old "rainman" version of Cliff has gone, he's smart, flexible and seems to be getting the best out of the players.
