Re: Center Options
In that case, we could just keep Biyombo (for the bench) for cheap and bring in Drummond...or even Cousins for cheap. Drummond is good for 15 and 15. Cousins, if he could return to just 60-70%, would be the best Center this franchise has seen since before 2004. This is assuming the main targets are all off the table at the time or demanding too much money.

The main thing with Drummond is the overpay. Draining the cap for Drummond would be second-guessed for years.
Charlotte could have $22M in cap space this summer and would be better served keeping Zeller at a reasonable price and adding a mid-level big. Cousins might be a decent add, but I just don't like the fit as a player on the downside of his career. Plus, he's a knucklehead. If Holmes could be had for Drummond money, that would be a better long-term investment.
We're so anxious to solve this problem that we overlook the fact that it should have already been fixed and Kupchak will now be playing a negative-leverage game when dealing with free agent centers. Trading should be even more difficult with the lack of overall talent on the roster. I don't look forward to another summer of the Hornets chasing players. Maybe having Melo will change the atmosphere, but I'm not holding my breath.

Re: Center Options
Drummond fits the bill as a traditional intimidating big man. The Knicks this year have highlighted the other archetype, the long athletic switchable big who can chase shooters off the 3-point line or stop them at the rim, without necessarily looking like someone who can handle an Embiid or a Valanciunas one on one. A question of priorities and compromises then.

I would be intrigued. He is coming off a season ending broken foot, which is always scary for bigs.
I also wonder how expensive Noel would be....but also am equally curious if he flourishes outside of a coach like Thibs.

Yeah, since people wants to have a fun team, he could be a nice center on the pnr (with some Vucevic light potential in the East). Not an intimidator though and not a long term option, but he has two years left on a ridiculous contract.

Zubac actually blocks shots too. I would be happy to have him in the rotation.

Re: Center Options
I wouldn't mind Gorgui Dieng as a cheap, short-term backup option for us. He's an upgrade over Biz for sure and at least a lateral move from Zeller. I think I'd take him over Zeller. Dieng's bigger with a 9'3.5 standing reach compared to Zeller at 8'10. He's a better shotblocker, way better shooter (43% from three last season) and is more durable. Could be a good backup compliment to a Holmes or Theis type with his size and shooting.

Re: Center Options
Drummond just got a dnp-cd in a do or die game.
Please don’t break the bank for him

Re: Center Options
There aren't any all star bigs available in free agency this summer, but the depth is pretty good.
Olynyk, Dieng, Drummond, Zeller, Noel, Nurkic, Holmes, R. Lopez, are all rotation level bigs.
Then there's the RFA crop of Markkanen, Z. Collins, Allen, and likely Mitchell Robinson.
I think we could have a shot at both Markkanen and Robinson because I dont think the Bulls and Knicks want to pay them. We likely won't be able to retain Monk if we decide to make a big RFA offer, but you can't have it all.

Re: Center Options
If I'm a free agent veteran big and want to maximize the remainder of my career, I look for the right fit, not the biggest paycheck this summer. LaMelo Ball offers the kind of transformational lead guard that can raise the on-court profile of a non-All Star level big. That translates to the NEXT contract. Choose the wrong situation (Drummond to LA) and it could cost that player millions in long-term salary.

Re: Center Options
Nurkic is injury prone but he'll be an upgrade over Cody/Biz. It would be interesting to have him here.

how james borrego plays his centers
nurk wants bigger role and hes not happy that terry stotts used him as a role player and im guessing he wants more shots (post ups, more pnr, shooting threes), make plays and hes obviously good defensive player
nurk has one year left on his contract (team option), which will be activated for sure and charlotte is one of the teams that looks like a good fit for nurk... he wants to stay in portland, but if he doesnt get a bigger role, i can see him asking for a trade and rich paul is his agent, so i guess there would be no problem finding him a new team (lakers perhaps)
