I doubt they'd sign a guy, any guy, for 5 years if it's his first contract with the team. They don't want to pay that out if things don't go well.
I'm thinking the longer the contract, the less per year they will be paying which might make any eventual payout easier to swallow?
Well for Dunlap this is NBA head coaching experience. He'd want this contract over with as soon as possible so he could get a bigger better contract, and we'd want it over as soon as possible in case it doesn't work out.

Most of them are millionaires in their early 20's playing a game for a living. I'm willing to bet 80% of us on this board would be "spoiled, self indulgent, self important" too if given the same opportunities. Simply put, they get paid more than the coach and will get paid more than the coach unless something drastic happens. Therefore they already have all the leverage. And what are you going to do? Not play Hendo, Kemba, T-Rob, or 2013's #1 pick when they don't buy in? Trade them and get less value in return.
Mike Dunlap might be a great coach....hell, I'm praying he'll be a great coach. But this no nonsense approach or "perfect for a young team" approach is not flying with me.
As mentioned by waydownsouth, when he coached in the Aussie league he ended up playing the young players over the regular veterans. So I guess if TT pulls his crap again this year, he won't be seeing much playing time.
Otherwise, I'm hoping and trusting that he has a way to reach the players that will work in the NBA.
He's a smart guy, I'm sure he can adjust.

Re: Mike Dunlap new Head Coach
dunlap is going to have to find a balance between being a tough, perfectionist and figuring out how to deal with the young millionaires.

More from Karl:
“Mike provides insight that I’ve never had anybody deliver,” Karl said. “When you talk to him off the court, he could be Socrates. On the court, he’s an intense, competitive SOB.”

Re: Mike Dunlap new Head Coach
crgreen, I really appreciate your knowledge and insight into our new coach. His record is deeper than I knew. His experience is transferrable here. At his age (same as mine) one has done enough to collect a level of wisdom that helps modulate the knowledge and actions needed in management. I hope this proves to be the right time for him and us.
It's also interesting that you perceive this as not a long-term solution. A variety of people seem to place his personality in a way that could conflict with success at the NBA head-coach level. We shall certainly see.

I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

Hearing the deal is for two years with team option for third and fourth, per espn insider via Denver post.
Not sure on the $ though though.

Re: Mike Dunlap new Head Coach
Dunlap said he believes this team’s two point guards, rookie Kemba Walker and restricted free agent D.J. Augustin, are well suited to a more running style. In his interviews with Higgins and Cho, Dunlap advocated running more “drag screens’’ – ball screens early in an offensive possession – to free up the point guards to get to the rim.
Those “drag screen’’ plays were central to offenses that showcased Steve Nash in Phoenix and Chris Paul in New Orleans. Dunlap said his goal is to make sure a ballhandler is attacking the rim in the first eight or so seconds of every possession.

kemba is going to look like a completely different player if dunlap is true to his word. silas did kemba no favors last year. kemba needs to be in serious attack mode every minute he is on the floor.
i am really really excited about dunlap.

Re: Mike Dunlap new Head Coach
Just having a proper game plan that everybody is educated in and executes will help Kemba enormously.
Silas lack of plan combined with no training camp made last year a complete wreck offensively. Especially when you have a player like Biz who needs a lot of guidance in that area.

Was one of the best press conferences I've seen from an incoming coach. The guy has done his homework on this team.

Bonnell has been putting out some nice pieces lately. Someone must have jumped his ass over at the Observer.

I think they just look great compared to Sorenson.

Sorenson is ok. It's that clown Fowler I can't stand.

As much as I like Tricky it's sad when he's our "elite" beat writer.
