I think stuff like this is completely overblown and irrelevant.

maybe, but someone in the marketing dept made a conscious decision to put miller top center and melo on the side with miles. it wasn't random. i just found it interesting.

Re: A New Day in Charlotte
I definitely noticed it. Also that Mark is not on it (I think that’s Simpson at the bottom right anyway).
Hopefully not an indicator about the back.

This is a super great video, definitely watch
They clearly were big on Tidjane, interesting to watch them break him down as a prospect during his workout

Re: Hornets DNA: A New Day in Charlotte
Interesting that they were talking about Tre Mann as a big part of the rotation
It also sounds like whoever was trying to trade up to 6 was offering scraps. Lottery protected 1st? gross

The rumor about us being interested in Sheppard at 4 seems legit after watching that

Yep, it's pretty clear based on the video the team released yesterday (which was awesome btw) that we were locked in on Sheppard and Salaun. As soon as Sheppard came off the board Peterson got a phone call and walked away. I wonder what we were offering the Rockets?

Great vid. Just managed to watch the whole thing. See they referred to the KJ pick as 2A. Assuming this means second round, A (#1) option.

I like Peterson so far, but I just hope he doesn't end up being bad at drafting. You kind of need to be good at drafting to be successful in Charlotte.

They didn't even Flinch when castle and Holland got picked.
There was like 60 people in that draft room. At first I thought it was just like the 10 of them at that table and then the camera pans out and there was like an audience of people behind them

I noticed that too, gave me the impression they never intended to take either of them

Re: Hornets DNA: A New Day in Charlotte
I didn't take it as a lack of interest in anyone necessarily, but more that they were prepared for every contingency and didn't need to react emotionally to any outcome. That's what Peterson mentioned in the video, everything being gamed out with the next move already determined. Obviously the videos are heavily edited but the process seemed extremely organized which was good to see.
Doesn't mean they got the picks right but at minimum they were thorough.

Re: Hornets DNA: A New Day in Charlotte
my guess is castle was expected to go at 4, so no surprise. and holland wasn't on their radar for the pick. if i had to guess, their big board(excluding sarr and risacher) looked something like
reed
castle
salaun
knecht
clingan
although they may have had salaun higher than castle

Re: Hornets DNA: A New Day in Charlotte
They knew Reed and Castle wouldn't be there. Both teams solicited offers for their slots and hinted at the players on the line for trade up.
Seems Peterson only mused about trading up for Reed. So, they liked Salaun enough to balk at the asking price on Reed at 3 and Castle at 4.
And they seemed to at least open a dialogue re: Clingan as BPA at 6. I don't think they liked Knecht enough to trade back and risk missing out on Salaun. San Antonio was taking Salaun 8, so Memphis (9) didn't work for Clingan. Blazers won another game of chicken drafting directly after us and paying zero premium to secure their prime target.
Seemed they just executed a contingency and didn't act very nimble moving up or down.
They played their slot and took someone for upside.
Salaun was a reach. Not saying he won't hit. Peterson is a pro scout. I just thought Portland mauled us, grabbing Avdija and Clingan. Salaun feels light in comparison, especially when Charlotte started from a stronger position/slot than the Blazers.

Re: Hornets DNA: A New Day in Charlotte
Can you think of a single example of a team with a top 10 pick taking a player another team behind them in the top 10 wanted, for the sole purpose of commanding an asset in a trade?
The risk you run is your intel is wrong and now you're stuck with a player you didn't want and lost the one you did.
I would prefer to not get cute and just take your guy.

Re: Hornets DNA: A New Day in Charlotte
Our guy at our cost is likely different from just plain our guy, at any old cost.
Reed seemed to be our guy, but not our cost.
Salaun feels like leftovers compared to Avdija + Clingan. And if Mark's health doesn't hold, I say fire away.

That said, I believe if players can improve, so can coaches and executives. If self-driven, people in general work to improve.
Our first draft from a new front office is no referendum on a newborn GM.

Re: Hornets DNA: A New Day in Charlotte
Not sure if you saw my post or not, doesn't seem like any of what you said is relevant or responsive. I don't know why you keep bringing up Deni as relevant in comparison to us, we didn't have a second lotto pick to trade.
I would venture to guess that the strategy you're wishing we took has happened extremely rarely, with the only example I can think of being the Luke - Trae swap.
I think the fact that it happens so rarely is telling about the advisability of the strategy.

I'm not sure you comprehend my post.
Blazers draft and predraft strategy is just one example of any front office drafting from any number of slots after ours yielding a greater return from a weaker position/slot.
It's a matter of doing more with less which involves some variance and does not conform strictly to identical scenarios.
That's not a realistic bar.
