I'm still leaning Donovan (been on the DM hype train since summer league). I just feel like his overall game will translate better over the upcoming years. Figured I'd put that in writing so you guys can mock me in several years if Monk turns into Curry 2.0 and DM maxes out as a Bradley clone.

Anyone else picked after Monk that you'd swap for Monk if given the chance today?

Nope. I’d take Moist over DM all day everyday.

And there’s nobody picked after Monk that I’d rather have. I thought he was a top 5 pick and I’m happy he slipped to us. All of those teams that passed on him will regret it.

I like Mitchell a lot and wouldn't be sad had we picked him over Monk, but I still think Monks ceiling is a decent amount higher. Monk has the potential to be an elite scorer and I think his defense will eventually be better than a lot of people are assuming (at least adequate, he actually has more length and arguably more athleticism than Mitchell). Mitchell looks like hes going to be a very good two way player for a long time, but he doesn't have the potential to be as dynamic as Monk imo. I'm still not sure if Mitchell's defense will be elite except when guarding shorter players (a la Avery Bradley), so even if he is still a very good overall defender I don't see that as valuable as Monk's scoring potential.

This draft was straight up loaded, though. I'd be thrilled now with basically any of the lottery picks except Kennard and Collins, and that is just because I haven't seen or heard anything about them so far (not actually saying they weren't good picks).

fatlever wrote:Here's another stupidly early fun question. Would you swap Monk for Fultz knowing what we know about his shoulder and rough start?

Anyone care to do a crazy early re-draft?

Thats another great question. Seems like Fultz might actually be the biggest question mark out of the top 11 or so picks right now because of the bizarre shoulder issue. I'm still going to assume it isn't a major issue going forward, but I was never actually sold on Fultz at all as the standout player from this draft and he is basically the only one of the top picks who hasn't been able to showcase his potential yet.

It was very few players in the whole draft I liked more than Monk, Maybe Fox and DSJ...but since the start of the season I can legit see Monk being the best player in this draft. he is as talented and gifted as anyone.

Look at Ntilikina harassing Harden... Dude has been averaging 2 steals per game in less than 20 minutes of action. I think I'd still prefer Ntilikina over Mitchell and you could even make the case for him over Monk (I won't cuz I'm so happy with Monk, though). This freaking draft class...

I could see the top two picks ending up in the lower portion of this draft class given time. It just looks that stacked and neither one has been overly impressive imo.

Same ^^

I'm actually soooo glad we sucked last season. This was a perfect draft class for us to be gifted a lottery pick that we probably didnt deserve based on our actual talent level.

I really don't get all the love for Monk over one good game. Yes, it was a great game, but it doesn't neglect his other duds. Let's see him provide some consistent scoring before praising him?

Seems to be doing just fine in comparison with the other wings in his draft area. Especially considering the ages

Yeah, about average to below average. What's your point? It definitely doesn't prove that he's a the next all star or Steph Curry...

Couldn't agree more. IMO expectations are a little unrealistic and unfair to Malik. Before yesterday he was .57 PPP in the halfcourt (4th percentile) which isn't too great considering halfcourt scoring is apparently what everyone is excited about. Including assists 0 percentile and .15 PPP behind Bismack Biyombo who himself is 348 out of 354 players.

Monk is 19 and out of position. Just let him play without building him up to something he isn't right now. That's how fans become disillusioned with a player when in reality the kid is fine but the expectations of him are not.

Honestly haven’t seen anyone building him up or claiming anything ludicrous after last nights game anyway, other than a Curry comment, which I’m assuming is just coming from exuberance. It’s normal to have some fun after a win or the board is all stats and complaining, which have there place, but becomes boring as ****. Worst I said was he could be in heat check HOF, which was kind of in jest. That’s like comparing him to JR Smith and Vernon Maxwell types. Not exactly great expectations.

Monk has the most points in a quarter in the NBA so far this season. for him to do it in his 8th game is a great, great sign for his high-end potential.

Agree.

Same folks going "whoaaaa slow down he's not that good" are using a 6 game sample size while playing out of position to justify that he's not that good.

He's a rookie. And he's young to boot. And he's playing a new position. More often than not he's going to be a below average player. What we should be looking for from him is flashes of potential. Those flashes will probably be fairly spread out, but will hopefully come more often as he gets more experience.

More of a general comment than anything in particular here. Happens all the time though with other fan bases and it's cringe worthy -- 1 game the guy has an unlimited ceiling and is comped to an all-star, the next game fans wanna chase him out of town. It's human nature but if the Hornets have shown anything it's that patience in developing players should be measured in years.

As for Malik it'll be interesting to see what happens the next couple weeks as defenses gel and make life more difficult for individual scorers. His greatest challenge I've seen so far (NBA and Kentucky) is getting into the paint or at least forcing defensive rotations off the bounce which is a basic requirement for a pg.

Monk showed some great ability in making big shots which will hopefully become consistent. It's too early to say right now but you can tell he possess a great deal of talent in breaking down the defense and make a drive into the paint. He's only 19 years old and is already showing us how great he will be in late game stretches in making the huge shots to take over the game.

My lofty expectations for year one; be fun to watch, give us the occasional, mindless scoring burst.

So far, so good. That would do it for me. Call it the low, low bar set by being an older, lifelong Hornets fan.

Mitchell vs Monk would be a tough one, but I'd lean Monk as I've grown a bit weary of 'solid' picks. Donovan will be solid.

No one else after Monk - at least for our team.

Monk was, and still is, my favorite pick for what I think we needed in this whole draft. We have just needed a microwave, confident, scoring combo guard for so long. I think he can maintain that role for a few years off the bench and when Kemba starts to slow down he will be ready to take over the PG reigns.

I really dont think anyone is being unrealistic...I had no problem with his first games when he sucked, because he didnt seem to care and kept shooting, which is what we need and what I wanted to see...we have too many guys who come and go based on their confidence levels (Frank anyone?)...eventually they will fall. The guy can certainly score points in bunches and is certainly exciting.
