He's keeping his options open. Free agents nearly always meet with several teams. His agent is doing his due diligence.

but thats not the case here. he is only guessing that the mavs will call if they dont get howard. thats like turning down a job because you think another job is going to call for an interview. only reason you do that is if you dont want to be here

He would probably pull a Tyrus Thomas if he actually had to play here.

I know Utah has good young backups but there has to be more to why they have not tried to keep him.

I wouldn't do that. I don't mind giving him a 4 year deal but not that much.

Not that I doubt the information but why is Broussard the only one talking about this?

Its going to take a max deal for him to play in Charlotte. Thats the price of being the Bobcats unfortunately. I wouldn't be surprised if he took a lesser contract on the Mavs than come here for a max deal.

I like Al Jefferson! I'd like to have him on the team! But giving a max deal to Al Jefferson, is that what this whole exercise of being putrid for two years and counting has led to? Really? $15 mln a year to Al Jefferson? To a player who just told us that he'd rather be in DAL? That's the pay off?

How many players today can do what Jefferson does?

Rebound and score in the post? Pekovich, Bogut, Kanter, Kaman, Boozer, Duncan, Splitter, Blair, Hibbert, West, both Gasols, Bynum and many more!

Bogut is well past his prime and injury prone as hell and under contract.
Kaman is past his prime and injury prone as hell.
Duncan I love, but he is heading past his prime and is under contract.
Boozer is far from a post player - he's a face up PF and is under contract.
Blair is crazy undersized and couldn't get playing time in front of a guy like Daiw. Heck, Matt Bonner got as much burn as him. Plus Blair is not a post player. He's a grunt player. That would be like adding Hansborough to this list.
Hibbert is over paid, inconsistent and under contract.
Splitter isn't a proven 20/10 guy and is under contract.
West is about to be under contract.
Both Gasol's are under contract.
Bynum is a hack.
Kanter isn't a 20/10 guy yet and is under contract.

So of the guys you have listed, only Bogut, Duncan, Kaman and Pau fit the true 20/10 offensive post guy - and they are all way older that what we need and under contract.

I think some people understate what Jefferson does.

All you said was "How many people can do what Jefferson does?" Not "How many people can do what Jefferson does and is currently a free agent and fits the age window of the Bobcats and averages 20 and 10?" The answer to that question is a resounding nobody, not even Jefferson who hasn't averaged 20 and 10 in like 4 years.

Because Chris Broussard covers all aspects of the NBA and frankly no one else cares about the Bobcats enough to ask around. As unfortunate as that is, it's true.

Yes I value his information over Broussard. That's why I was wondering why he hadn't had a mention of it yet.

This kinda sucks....

I want Al Jefferson, but I am not fond of paying him 15 million a year, while not being his first choice. I hope Dwight hurries up and decides because I do not want to sit here in anticipation for us to sign him, and then find out he is going to Dallas. Do you think Dallas will offer him that much?

They wont need to, I'm sure he would work with Dallas on what they would offer him if it meant he go to Dallas instead of here. As much as I don't want him here anyway I feel like that's what him and his agent are thinking now. Maybe if nobody wants him he lowers his price though. I don't feel like Al is worth anywhere close to 15 mil. Id say 10 tops.

I do not see him getting any more than 4 for 54.. I would do 4 for 50 for sure...

4 for 60??? does he think he is Lebron?

Guess this is how it is going to be in Charlotte though

Ok...ok i've changed my status on this whole Al Jefferson thing. After some serious thought process...i don't want him here. I just don't think signing him for anything over $10/4 is not worth it.

This guy was Utah's best player and where did he get them? Out of the playoffs, that's where. Same player in Minny, he was very good(all star snub...whatever) but his "stats' just didn't translate to team wins. He'll just be holding back the development of our young bigs Cody and Biz. Give them a whole season to develop under Ewing and run with them as our starting frontcourt in 14-15, the season where we should be making a serious push for the playoffs and start contending in 15-16.

In all, i think Al Jeff will put up some nice numbers, but would it be worth it? No. He may get us 3-4 more wins though. I don't even want to go anywhere near the max for him either.

Al Jefferson didn't cost Utah a playoff spot. A lack of a point guard and a head coach who had no idea what rotation he wanted to run did.

And yes, Al didn't make the playoffs in Minnesota. But in those years even KG couldn't so why even bring it up?

There's plenty of stuff to get on the guy about - not being a leader, not 'getting it' until his 3rd team, growth in his game, willingness to defer, etc.

Hopefully we're smart about this and don't give a guy who's obviously waiting on 2 others to move first a max just for the sake of giving him a max.

Who else wants Al?
Who else wants to pay upwards of 12 mil per for him?

It would be nice for us to have him but we don't NEED to sign him. And definitely not on his terms either.

At least this is what I hope is going on in our FO right now...

I really hope they're just talking him just to keep fans happy and then not actually sign him. It's a waste of money imo
