Re: Hornets DNA: A New Day in Charlotte
I'd rather have just taken Clingan and gotten the better player, which often tends to lead to success, but it wasn't my decision and I'll hope Salaun turns out to be worth it.

Re: Hornets DNA: A New Day in Charlotte
I hope I'm wrong, but I'm like 90 percent sure I'm not. I don't even believe his ceiling is that high, considering he had almost no basketball skills. Like someone tell me his skills set. Not taking clingan in a big whiff. A guy who can come in and play right away was there for the taking, and we just don't give a damn. Makes no sense.Rich4114 wrote:JDR720 wrote:Salaun is a swing for the fences pick.
But I wonder how high that fence actually is. Because as of now, he doesn't seem to have many NBA skills. Maybe he's a Tobias Harris type if he reaches his ceiling?
Can't believe we took him over Clingan still. I hope I'm wrong but man...

Salaun seems like the type of pick that never ever ever pans out for the hornets. that said I feel like yall are seriously over rating Clingan

Hey, Clingan didn’t blow up summer league on offense, but he demonstrated his defensive impact consistently. Stretch shooter? Nope…he clanged nearly every 3 point attempt. But he rebounded, blocked shots and made life tough inside. He will need time, training and experience to see where he resides in the league, but I would have loved to had him backing up Williams while learning. Until Mark shows us he is healthy, and can put in the quality minutes night after night, I’m not convinced he’s back.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

I don't think anyone thinks Clingan is a star or anything like that, but his floor is much higher than Salaun's is.
If Saluan's ceiling is a good player but not a star, why not go ahead and take Clingan who has the same ceiling, but a higher floor?
Seems like the team fell in love with his intangibles, not his skills. They think they can coach him up, which is good I guess, but at the same time they could've got caught up in what they want him to be, not what he actually is. It's like a mystery box, it could be anything so why not take it over a box you already know the contents of?

Re: Hornets DNA: A New Day in Charlotte
its hard for me to see salaun's ceiling as much more than a role player. 5th starter, 12ppg, 4rpg, 37% from 3, hustle/garbage guy. (lows stocks, low assists, low shot creation)

As an 18 year old in a top tier professional league he averaged 9 points and 4 boards and 33% from 3. Your posted line seems unreasonably pessimistic to me.

Re: Hornets DNA: A New Day in Charlotte
I said this before but think they view him as a mobile, small ball big in the long term
AND
They didn't trust Clingan's combination of huge size and previous injury history. Remember he was getting a lot of top 3 hype and "fell" to 7

i think it's quite realistic. he's a role player, 5th option, unless he:
1) greatly improves his ball handling
2) turns into a passer
3) becomes a lights out 3pt shooter
4) or becomes a ft merchant
he's a hustle, garbage man, who runs the floor, spots up in corner, crashes glass, maybe becomes a plus defender. thats his architype. maybe he can be a poor man's gerald wallace type (if he becomes a ft merchant) with slightly better 3pt shooting, but without the blocks/steals.
front offices chasing the white whale, the myth of the next [fill in blank]. in this case, chasing next giannis. it rarely works.
i'm not mad at the pick. i would have selected clingan (because i don't trust mark and i think nick is not very good), but i don't hate the pick. but i'm setting my expectations. we drafted an energy/hustle 3d role player at 6. we need that on this team (culture setting needed), but it's a low floor/low ceiling pick, imo.

Again, he posted extremely similar stats in a top tier professional league at 18. Do you think his ceiling is he doesn't get much better?
I just don't understand saying his absolute best case scenario is marginally better than he is at age 18.

Re: Hornets DNA: A New Day in Charlotte
his role in france was likely the same - hustle/energy cuts, corner 3s. that's his game. he can do similar here, eventually. we are describing a 5th option role player. my yeballs tell me he lacks the 1 and 2 from below. those are instincts and stuff most players show before 18. so, his path to becoming more lies with 3 and/or 4. otherwise, he's exactly what i described. still a useful player, but a low ceiling.
1) greatly improves his ball handling
2) turns into a passer
3) becomes a lights out 3pt shooter
4) or becomes a ft merchant
tell me what path you think is realistic for him to become more than a role player?

Re: Hornets DNA: A New Day in Charlotte
11 pts 4 bds is barely a role player.
Why are we certain his ceiling can't be a bigger Mikhal Bridges, who as a 19 year old red shirt freshman shot 29% from 3 and averaged 6 points and 3 boards?

Grant on twitter responding to someone.
It’s not me who you should be crediting. Although i appreciate the sentiment I do believe as a charlottean that this new ownership group, staff, and players will bring this team to levels the city hasn’t seen and i’m blessed to be apart of it.

There you have it Lamelo is not a leader and I'm fine with that as long as he plays to a allstar calibre level. To me if he wants to just play and help the team win that's great let veteran players like Grant and the coach set the culture.

IMO you have to have a real skewed perspective to use that quote to criticize LaMello but praise Grant.

I'm not using it as a criticism as I said I'm fine with him balling out without the added pressure of being a leader but there are other people who suggest he should be because he got the max contract

How do you get "there you have it, LaMelo not a leader" out of that lmao
