Re: Fun with Stats!!!
Batum has to get those %s up. he's been great otherwise (except for that night he decided to give the ball away to the Hawks)

Re: Fun with Stats!!!
^what I've noticed is that basically each one of the starters has good stuff going for him as far as on/off stats are concerned, while it's the opposite for the bench. we'll be able to tell more about the effect of certain players once a couple of guys miss some games or line-ups get tweaked a bit because so far everyone is affected by the group they play with.

All the stats say that Marvin is playing the best basketball of his life. Let's hope he keeps it up!

Re: Fun with Stats!!!
the tale of the 3rd quarter Spurs game
11:27 Aldridge sat with four fouls; West replaced him
7:12 Parker sat for Mills
5:39 Hornets had achieved a 10 point swing from being 4 behind to going 6 ahead
At that point Clifford inexplicably subbed both Zeller and Lin. (Secondary question: why is Zeller always the first off the bench ?). Usually only Zeller subs in at this point
So we had Walker-Lin-Batum-Zeller-Jefferson on the floor (they have had little PT together)
From 5:39 to 2:23 we had a 13 point lead change - we went from 6 ahead to 7 behind
Clifford took a timeout at 4:21 and again at 2:23
At 4:21 the Spurs had tied it (on two Duncan jumpers and one Leonard jumper), Clifford did not make any personnel changes but Pop replaced West with Diaw and Green with Ginobli making the Spurs lineup more fast ball movement oriented
At 2:23 the Spurs had gone 13 ahead on a Leonard and-1 and a barrage of 4 3 pointers in a row - 2 by Ginobli - one by Mills - then another by Ginobli . Clifford called time and replaced Jefferson with Hawes and Walker with Lamb
Pop responded by replacing Leonard with Green and Duncan with West.
So now the Batum/ Lin/Zeller combination has gone through 2 changes in Spurs lineup and one change in its own line up
-
The bench plus Batum then plays through end of quarter falling behind 10 points more to end the quarter with the Hornets behind by 17
1:25 Clifford takes another timeout but no substitutions are made
Clifford never plays the lineup that got us back from 20 behind to 5 behind in the Heat game.
The conclusions I draw from all this are spurs have better players, they have played together longer, and Popovich is a mad genius.
And . . . Clifford is playing it a little bit too safe and needs to wing it a little but more in terms of figuring out player combinations, and be a little more situation specific in making substitutions
Edit- this is posted both here and in game thread. I posted here by accident but wanted to leave since Fatslever responded to my question. Thanks!

Re: Fun with Stats!!!
Zeller is always the first sub because Clifford wants to bring Marvin out, so that he can bring Marvin back in as a SF when Batum comes out. The idea is to always have one of Batum or Marvin on the floor at SF at all times.

Re: Fun with Stats!!!
Interesting chart. We are second row, first on the left.

Going from left to right my thoughts.
Less Alfense, please get to the restricted more, STOP IT KEMBA, finally.

The Rockets have the best chart, the Spurs have the worst.

Re: Fun with Stats!!!
Through 8 games, Hornets are 8th in offensive efficiency and 17th in defensive efficiency.
Of our four losses, two were close losses and came against ATL who are currently 8-2, one was on the road against SAS who are 6-2, and one was on the road against MIA who are 5-3.

Re: Fun with Stats!!!
think the offensive efficiency is impacted by how well the hornets take care of the ball. least turnovers per 100 possessions in the league. Kemba deserves to be kicked around after poor shooting nights like last, but he still very solid at taking care of the ball, as is lin and other starters.

Re: Fun with Stats!!!
Hornets once again lead the league in DRB% at 82.4%, which tops our league best DRB% of 79.3% from last season. We've played Al less, don't have Biz or MKG at all, and yet we are still the best in the league and rebounding on the defensive end at a rate that is better than we ever have.
Trivia Time!
Q: What was the last team to post above a 79.0% DRB% that did not have Steve Clifford as a head coach?
A: Never been done by anyone else.

I still wish Clifford was a little less anal about defensive rebounding so we could get some more fast break opportunities. I like being good at defensive rebounding, but I would be happy with just being very good instead of GOAT status at it if it meant some more transition baskets.

good point. whats interesting is that the spurs and hornets have bottom 5 FBPs, but top 10 in offensive efficiency.

You'd be ok at potentially giving up offensive rebounds and second chance points for the "chance" of maybe scoring a leaked out, cherry picking, fast break transition basket or two?

I think we are good enough at rebounding to let some of our guards to use some discretion and leak out for fast breaks a little more than they currently do. There is no reason we should be so terrible in transition with so many fast and athletic players. I feel like we have to be missing some opportunities to get easy baskets.
edit: Also, fast break opportunities may not be guaranteed points, but neither are offensive rebounds.
