On this team, he is a role player and his role is to cover for those guys when they're not there or don't have it. So far he's done a pretty good job of that imo. I think he runs into difficulty when he tries to expand outside of that or is confused on what his role is on the team.
I find his role larger than that. Organize the second unit and be its PG or main facilitator. But beyond that when on with the starters he is called on to penetrate and break down the defense to create for himself or others. Provide energy and hustle and be part of good transition basketball when possible. Draw fouls. I think this is a big one because not only does he go to the line for points, he gets teams in penalities. And, as we saw in the Wizards game, be in there to take big shots if they present themselves and sometimes he is an option on a play or the play is called for him.
I don't think he should think of Batum or Kemba at all except to play off of them and they play off of him. He shouldn't defer to them which I think is a mistake in his mental approach to the game. He shouldn't defer. He should just be confident and make plays. There are plenty of times Lin is on with Kemba or Batum and makes plays whether it was the one stretch in a recent game where just about every play went to him (Kemba kept feeding him the ball) and resulted in assists for about 5 consecutive plays, late in games on with Batum where he makes big drives and scores or gets fouled and knocks down free throws or creates for others. Or when he took over in one OT with both Kemba and he on the floor in the Kings OT game (he was relatively quiet until OT in that game). Sometimes, I feel like hit the Go button on Lin's back because I think he just doesn't put himself in the flow of the offense. But he's always there on the other side playing hard, he doesn't let up on D.
I see your point but when it comes down to it, Clifford will trust Batum and Kemba more than Lin to facilitate, especially lately. That's just the way it goes and as long as the Hornets are winning using this formula, Lin doesn't really have a strong case. I'm not saying that this should be the formula ALL the time because we've seen the tide change many times throughout the season. Each player will go through hot and cold streaks, it just so happens that right now Batum and Kemba are playing well and Lin is not, so Lin doesn't have a strong case to be the main facilitator. Also, both Batum and Kemba also have longer leashes with Clifford because of their stature on this team so they will get the benefit over Lin more often than not.
Remember when Lin was playing well a few weeks ago, Clifford was playing him 30+ mins/game and in a couple of games he logged more minutes than Kemba. I know we were shortmanned but still, he earned those minutes, this is Clifford's philosophy he likes to play the hot hand so to speak. Now that MKG and Lamb are back, court time is harder to compete for so Lin has to be on top of his game to deserve good minutes again. Clifford gave him a small opportunity after the Cavs game and Lin fell flat with the 2nd unit, and since then he's been relying more on Batum and Kemba. Lin is in a funk right now which he has to get himself out of, a good start would be to hit some wide open shots.
