He was knocking down that 15 footer with regularity last year. I'd like to see him take more of those and threes.

Yeah but he's taken plenty this year and hasn't really justified more than 2-3 a game. He needs to make more of them, maybe getting some plays run for him would help. He isn't very good beyond the arc when he has to dribble, he's better posting up or catching/shooting, which generally means a play was run for you because he doesn't really have the awareness of the floor to get open on his own.

article about his injury

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2013/0 ... llens.html

“I didn’t really see it until I got on the X-ray table. When I saw it, I kind of freaked out – I’d never seen a sprained ankle look like that,” Mullens recalled.

“I absolutely thought it was broken.”

“Rehab is going great and I’m out of the boot. I was hoping to be out of it even sooner but I don’t want to rush things,’’ Mullens said. “The swelling has gone down and I just have a bone bruise.

“It doesn’t look like it did (before the sprain), but I just have one little knot on the left side of my ankle. If you saw it (right after the sprain) and saw it now, it’s 100 times better.”

The medical staff hasn’t given him a firm projection of when he’ll be ready to play, but he’s happy with the progress he’s made and relieved that ankle fracture he envisioned wasn’t the case.

Coach Mike Dunlap gave no time projection on Mullens, but called it a "terrible injury,'' indicating Mullens tore at least one ligament.

Update on Byron Mullens: He's been cleared to shoot and to start running on the zero-gravity machine (which takes load off his ankle) (more)

I can't wait for Byron to come back so everybody will blame him for all the Bobcat's struggles instead of Bismack.

Is it bad that I'm starting to miss him? At least every 10 games or so he'd play pretty well.

we definitely miss his rebounding and the spacing he provides. perhaps watching from the bench for a few weeks will give him some time to think about his shot selection and defense.

Our games got much worse when he went out.

Bobcats coach Mike Dunlap said Byron Mullens is a "long way away" from playing. Mullens sprained his ankle just before Christmas

Byron Mullens (ankle sprain) says it's possible he'll be activated during upcoming five-game trip. He's been out since Christmas.

He needs to be careful if he's returning soon, ankle sprains get re-injured again and again, particularly if you haven't eased yourself back in, from personal experience. Dunlap better watch his minutes for now and ease him back him in.

Damn we need this guy back though. We essentially tanked every game while he was out. Hope he's practiced some shooting.

Byron Mullens made me resent my hatred for him a month after his injury once I realized that he's sadly our best big man by a mile. Extend the qualifying offer to this young man.

I'd actually give him an extension. The guy is really only in his second full year in the league after spending the first two either playing in the D-League or garbage minuets in blowouts. He's still learning and I think he's learning so much he was pressing too much and trying to do too much at one time. Don't forget he's a 23-year-old 7-footer with athleticism, range, and isn't completely terrible at either end of the floor. He's got value and upside.

I think the smart thing to do would be to go after Al Jefferson, Paul Milsap, and Andray Blatche before deciding to extend Byron Mullens for at least another 3 years. If we strike out on those options then extending Mullens would probably be the right thing to do. He has the potential to be a all-star but it is so frustrating to watch him right now during these development stages.

We can wait till Jefferson and the others make their decisions then re-sign Mully. His cap hold is less than $6M I think. We can re-sign Mully and sign another guy both pretty easily, especially if we amnesty Tyrus.

I like DeJuan Blair as a cheap option to pair with Mullens without breaking the bank.

Byron Mullens told me post-game he intends to play Monday in Miami. He's been out since before Christmas with that sprained left ankle.
