i get that the two players are similar in terms of how they disappointed compared to their draft slots. both guys went on to have decent NBA careers, but they were always judged based on their draft slot, even long after it was even relevant to discuss it.

i think most of us are knowledgeable enough fans to be able to separate marvin the #2 pick in 2005 from marvin the role playing forward of 2014.

its the contract that is awful, not marvin specifically. we paid him like we expect him to be a starter. marvin just isnt good enough to be a reliable starter on a playoff team and he certainly hasnt done anything in the past few years to justify what we paid him.

So we're gonna have two guys on the roster coming back from Achilles injuries? Awesome.

Well, Williams played just about all of last year on it, but I doubt he's anywhere as explosive as he used to be. I can't think of a player that has ever come back the same after tearing an Achilles.

have we mentioned his awful history with back injuries?

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/blogsjazzn ... g.html.csp

not only is he only a year removed from Achilles surgery, but he has missed time on 5 difference occasions in his career due to back problems, most recently last in March of last year when he has an MRI.

You guys are going to like Marvin, he is really underrated. Absolutely a starting quality player or EXCELLENT off the bench. Plays very good defense at both forward positions. He played best as a stretch 4.

El Segundo, Calif. •Â The shallowest thing in Southern California right now?

It may be the Utah Jazz's bench.

But don't expect small forward Marvin Williams to be back for the Jazz too soon. The team plans to push Williams, who is rehabbing after an Achilles surgery this summer, harder in practice beginning Thursday, but there's still no timeline for his return.

"I would circle today if I could," Williams said after shootaround Wednesday morning. "We haven't looked at that. The trainers have been great. They're taking it slow. Everybody's being really cautious."

Williams said he began to feel the affects of his heel injury in January, and it greatly limited his game. He averaged career lows in minutes and points last season.

"It's very difficult to plant and jump and cut," he said. "I feel like I got to the league doing that, and when I finally couldn't do that last year, it really affected my game. Hopefully this year I got it taken care of and it will be back to normal."

Williams, whom Utah acquired from Atlanta in 2012, averaged 7.2 points and 3.6 rebounds a game for the Jazz a year ago.

While he said he's feeling healthier each day, Williams said he's still "not very explosive" right now off the injured foot.

"The doctors said when I got it done that would be the last thing to come back," he said.

The former No. 2 pick has been shooting and conditioning with the team.

"It's always tough to watch [from the bench]," he said. "Especially when you're kind of in the dog days of the season, training camp, you kind of want to suffer with your teammates. You want to be there for them, so I try to get out there and do as I much as I can."

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/865580973/Utah-Jazz-Marvin-Williams-to-undergo-surgery-on-Achilles-heel-out-for-six-months.html?pg=all
Williams will undergo surgery Monday in Charlotte, N.C., to repair his right Achilles tendon and sore right heel, which caused him to miss some action this past season.

According to the Jazz, the expected rehabilitation and recovery time for Williams is about six months. That would have the small forward back in action around the beginning of December, about a month into the regular season.
Repairing his Achillies makes it sound like it was a legit injury that warranted surgery. He was out six months, which is roughly how long Kobe was out after his Achillies injury.

You know that old guy down at the rec center who still has surprisingly effective game because he's so smart? Marvin plays like him. Finds open spaces, never makes a bad pass, can't move like he used to but he is long enough and smart enough to make up for lost ground with perfect spacing.

Charlotte overpaid for sure, but you'd have loved Marvin at $4 million. He does a lot of good things. And he's one of the best humans around...Genuinely he's the guy you want your son to be when he grows up.

i hope you are right. i'll eat crow if that is the case. i think he will be no better than tolliver was for us last year (when he played), but i am open to being wrong.

Your team spent $7 million for two years on a guy whose value is $4 million per. Our team spent $15.75 million per year for four years on a guy whose statistical value is $9 million per. Your team was almost in position to overpay by the sum total of Marvin's entire salary every year for four years. Instead, you dodged that bullet and it hit us squarely in the chest.

How do you feel now? :D

the contract, sure - even though its just two years, but you don't have to dissect the thread to see who's upset at what and how illogical it is

We're not mad at Marvin Williams being Marvin Williams. We're mad at Marvin Williams for making twice of what we should have spent on a player of his caliber. It is impossible to be this upset at a one-year minimum deal for a team at the bottom of the league.

check the old threads

the contract is 14/2 guaranteed for a guy that is generally a net positive now and fills a need. i guess people just don't understand contracts, market value, and how you get a guy who's sitting right at the forefront of MLE lists in weak and thoroughly overpaid market already. its really hard to be mad considering he'd be lucky to play the entirety of his contract for us.

FWIW, I would have never signed.Hayward to a contract. It was clear your GM would match anything. Still, somebody was going to offer him big $$ so either way you were destined. I also would not have signed Marvin to a large $ amount, but our GM sleeps with Utah Jazz posters above his bed.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

haha...

i'd still rather have hayward, but i am in the minority around here. he was the perfect fit between kemba, mkg and jefferson - at least for players we realistically would have a shot at in the next few years.

do you think the suns or the mavs (if they miss on parsons) would have offered hayward a max deal? i always got the feeling that if it wasnt the hornets who offered him that deal, it would have been someone else. there did not seem to be a shortage of teams interested in overpaying hayward.

Jazz fan here: A few things.

Marvin will win some games for you. Probably against lesser teams, and at home.
Marvin is a solid player.
Marvin disappeared for us, after the all star break.
Marvin's defense is overrated.
Marvin is a good locker room guy.
Marvin is worth no where near what you payed for him.

You're probably right. Can you imagine if Cleveland had signed him during his visit there? Good-bye LeBron! We signed Gordon Hayward instead.

Maybe we're stocking up on good locker room guys in preparation of the Stephenson-Hairston era.
