Instead of a random draft order, we should either do in order of crunkness, or auction style, or just me first and then whatever (so I can pick MJ).

Re: *NEW* Retro Scavenger Draft - sign up now (9 people so f
speaking of MJ, I'm thinking it's best to have a do-not-draft list of 3-5 guys.
1. Unless the first pickers completely flub up their subsequent picks, MJ/Kareem/etc. are going to be at the top of any list
2. It'll help (force) us to pick some lesser players, leaving it up to debate more who picks a good team than who has the cream of the crop
3. I will have an excuse to pick a few of my favorite players who I wouldn't have picked otherwise.
Also, disregard this post if I get a top 2-3 pick.

Re: *NEW* Retro Scavenger Draft - sign up now (9 people so f
i'd agree to a "do not draft" list of one - MJ. after MJ i dont think any others are good enough to carry a team vs another team of Hall of Famers.
would hate to eliminate the top 5 guys for this draft. it would be so much fun to build a team around magic, russell, bird, kareem, wilt, oscar etc... and even if we keep MJ i think there are so many great players to choose from that depth will override having MJ for this one. the difference between MJ and the 10th best player of all time is much less than the difference between lebron/kobe and the 10th best current player. when you consider last draft spot will get picks 10, 11 and 21 vs 1, 20 and 30 i think team 10 can compete with team 2.
but again, i am open to making MJ ineligible just to get rid of that whole "i have the GOAT i cant lose" argument.

Yeah it's not as productive to cut out all positions because there are 4 or 5 Centers and Point Guards who can legitimately be centerpieces to an unbeatable team. Leaving all of them is fine in my book because there really isn't THAT much of a difference.
But the other three spots are much more top heavy (PF to a lesser extent). Maybe taking only MJ out is the right call, maybe MJ and Bird is.

It'll be hard to vote for this that's for sure. So many amazing players and so much disagreement on which individual is better than some other individuals, etc. I think leaving them in would be more fair than not.

One thing is for certain. I think a super team from this era would give an older super team fits.
I watched an old Lakers (Kareem/Magic) and Sixers (Moses and Dr J) game and my lawd, they played some awful basketball.

I think we won't be able to agree on a winner.
There are going to be so many arguments of past legends and who is better than who. It's going to be fun.

I'm with Sachmo, seems impossible to pick winners... but I'm in anyway.

Re: *NEW* Retro Scavenger Draft - starts Tuesday
we have 10 now. we can go ahead and set a start date. I think Tuesday is good. gives everyone some time to get a preliminary list together.
i'll still allow up to 2 more people to join between now and monday afternoon. gonna cap this at 12. or we go with our 10. either way we start Tuesday.
will post draft order tomorrow afternoon.

I'm just going to wing it. No point in setting a list of guys I want to draft because they'll just get taken

Same here... the categories are also so broad that I feel like I'll be able to take basically whoever I can think of.

Re: *NEW* Retro Scavenger Draft - starts Tuesday
Didn't have the time to write this before, so I just wanted to say - I'm so excited to do this. It's fun enough to have a scavenger draft with players in the NBA today, but this is on a whole another level. Thanks for organizing this. Finally there will be a use for all those bench warmers I keep in my head/remember from the NBA in the 80s and 90s.
As for MJ. There's no second thought about the fact that if I had the number one pick, I'd go with Jordan. These teams will be stacked with all-time greats, so it is possible that he will be the main reason for a lot of people to choose the team he's on. It isn't even wrong, if anything like this could happen in real life he would definitely close out games the best and try to win. He'd have the motivation to prove everybody that he's the best of all-time. I don't know if closing him out of the draft is the right move, but I definitely understand why it needs to be done.

I would pick MJ too. Just because he's the best. And he's fresh in our minds. I think voters will shy towards newer players they remember.
EDIT: Three of the best PFs of all time are still playing. PF will be hard to fill. I suspect I will be playing a C there instead.

Draft order has been determined (drawn under the strict supervision of my 4 1/2 year old and my 3 year old - so you can rest assured nothing fishy was going on) and posted in the OP.

Re: *NEW* Retro Scavenger Draft - starts Tuesday
****. I think Second might be the worst spot in the draft. Don't get MJ (unless paydro wants to be super nice
) and the rest of the guys are pretty much equal.

Re: *NEW* Retro Scavenger Draft - Paydro's Pick
thanks for doing that slam.
now paydro can stop complaining about picking last
looks like i will have to go the chemistry/depth route at #8. sigh, no bird. watching him abuse the rockets from the 86 finals now on nbatv.
