Draft
Hornets stand pat and use all their draft picks. They land Nik Stauskas at 9, Elfrid Payton at 24, and random project big or EU guy who will stay overseas next year.
Free Agency
McBob opts out, but instead of resigning him the Hornets go after and land Kris Humphries instead. They use their remaining cap space on Steve Blake and CDR.
Trades
The Hornets trade Gary Neal straight up to the Clippers for Jared Dudley. This is potentially a downgrade if Dudley stays as bad as he did last year … but if he regains even a bit of his Phoenix form then he could push MKG for the starting job.
PG – Kemba, Blake, Payton
SG – Hendo, Nik
SF – MKG, Dudley, CDR
PF – Humphries, Zeller
C – Jefferson, Biyombo, Dust Chip or project guy
Essentially the team is 3 deep at PG with a Kemba backup who has major range and a young prospect with enough D to play right away if one of the two guys in front of him is injured.
They have 5 wing players, 3 of whom are at least OK 3 point threats. By year’s end Hendo is 6th man and either Nik, CDR, or Dudley (with MKG as a 2) is starting.
The Big Man rotation is mostly Jefferson, Humph, and Zeller, with Biz getting shots every time someone is hurt. Humph gives Cliff enough stretch that he opens up space for MKG and the rest of the team … but enough inside presence that the team still can run something like the Alfence with Al on the bench.
My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody
