I just need to read in bed to quiet my mind. I always need a back up book though, if I finish the book before falling asleep I'm doomed to be awake for hours. I need to read until I pass out

I used to always. I had the emergency thing happen with a friend in high school which led to me always leaving it on obsessively.

Now that I'm married, I don't. My wife is the absolute lightest sleeper imaginable. So any ding from a text or what not would wake her up for the rest of the night. I just use the feature on iPhone that basically ignores the people you want and allows the others to come through.

Spoiler:
I don't mute my phone. I leave my phone on vibrate about 90% of the time, mainly because I forget to turn the ringer on after work. I don't get many phone calls though, so no big deal for me.

I am crazy obsessive about sleep. I can't sleep if I hear any repetitive noises, any sounds that are in a wave form, anything that isn't not random. No sleeping to music or TV (I've never understood how people do that). No tick tock clocks. No snoring. No fans that have a repetitive click. No ceiling fans that rock back and forth. No outside AC units with a wave in the motor. No motorized sounds of any kind that have a predictable wave. No birds. No crickets.

I have two white noise machines in my bedroom and I also sleep with an earplug, no two, but one, with the other ear against the pillow. If you use two earplugs, you'll only hear your heartbeat, which is as bad as a tick tock clock. I have a 3rd white noise machine in my main living room used to block out the sound of my annoying loud ass neighbors when they play their TV too loud. Thanks thin ass apartment walls. You'd expect more quality for what I pay to live in a new apartment in south Charlotte. Seriously, its time to buy a house, not a condo, but a house, with no shared walls.

Behind where I live they are doing massive construction, so in the mornings I get the sounds of bulldozers going (beep beep beep) as they move around and the awful loud hum of the motors. And then there is this giant church about 1/4 mile away, that shall remain nameless, that likes to put on rock concerts every Sunday morning, so I get woken up at 8:30AM to the bass coming thru the walls. Even the best white noise machines and earplugs stuggle to block out bass.

Just my random bitching about apartment living and the non-stop noises that annoy me. Seriously, why are people who live in apartments so **** inconsiderate? I made sure to get on the top floor so I didnt have any dickheads walking around above me in high heels, or a family with 3 kids running around, or the couple with two 80 lb dogs who think its OK to let them chase the ball around the apartment all night. However, that doesn't stop Paco McStompyfeet from banging around in his apartment next to me every night.

Back to the original question. I remember the last few years my dad was alive, he was really sick, and I'd keep my phone on loud ringer back then because I was always expecting that scary phone call from my mom telling me they were on the way to the emergency room. So, yeah, that sucked. Now, with all my white noise and earplugs, I might sleep right thru a phone call.

Reminder to the board, don't get Fats fired up about his sleep OCD unless you want to read a massive rant.

Oh, wait, another random apartment story...

So, last week my fire alarm went bonkers at 5AM in the morning. It was so **** loud. I know I woke up everyone in my building. I could not get the alarm to stop going off. I climbed up on the stool at 5AM and pushed the button and it would stop for about 20 seconds and then start going off again. All the time it is saying "WARNING CARBON MONOXIDE". And I'm like WTF? Am I about to die in my sleep. So I called 911 and had the fire department come out. I had to wait outside for them to show up. They brought the big ass red truck and 5 dudes climb out and follow me to my apartment where they do all the tests for CO. Nothing. It was a faulty smoke detector. Thankfully the maintenance just happened to be awake and saw the fire truck and they told him what happened to he comes knocking on my door at 6AM and replaces the unit, which causes another round of super loud alarms. That was really embarrassing.

Speaking of phones, any of you guys play fallout shelter? I'm addicted to that game.

I don't mute mine either. A. I use it for an alarm clock and B. I have to always be within contact for work in case they need me.

I'm also fairly obsessive about sleep, though not quite to the point of fatsanity.

I spend so much time outside that I truly get deeper and more restful sleep out in the woods where I have a breeze, the sounds of nature, rainfall, a distant storm, etc. I sleep like a **** king in a hammock during a rainstorm.

When I'm at home, the house HAS to be freezing cold while I sleep. Work has permanently messed up my sleep quality and patterns. I sleep very lightly and everything must be setup just so so I don't wake up 4-5 times throughout the night.

The room has to be pitch black with darker paint on the walls, two layers of blackout curtains, the status lights on the wifi router, tv, and smoke detector are all covered with electrical tape, and any night lights in the bathroom or hall have to be situated where no light spills around/under the doors. If the curtains are just so that outside light leaks in, I have to get out of bed to fix it.

I even have a noise machine that plays the various sounds mentioned above. It helps some, but not always.

I would cherish the ability to wake up at 830 on any given day. I'm programmed to be up between 430 and 5, no matter when I finally get to lay down, so even on Saturday/Sunday, I'm up by sunrise (6) at the latest.

I'm often on call and am a bit of light sleeper too, waking up through the night doesn't overly worry me.

Don't have much choice with my cat anyhow, he demands to be let out at around 5 every morning.
Managed to sleep through his whinging once and woke up to a turd in the bathroom.

Touche cat

I knew we were losing when he missed that extra point. I mean he is a freshman kicker, what are you gonna do.

Is there a logical explanation for why App didn't take their last timeout on their final drive before that last play? Seemed like terrible clock management.

None. Between them and Vandy not calling a timeout we all got dumber at understanding end of game football.

All the things App State had to do to lose that football game
1. Missed extra point
2. Have cornerback bounce off WR on way to allowing 60 yard TD
3. Miss go ahead FG from 40 yards with 4 mins left
4. Not try 49 yd FG to win on 2nd down with 30 secs left
5. Not call time out after losing yards on 3rd down
6. Running out of bounds for 1st down as time expired, just half sec too late to attempt about 45 yd FG to win
7. Vols fumble at 1 foot line, ball falls next to several App State players, but recovered in end-zone for TD

:banghead:

And **** you to the idiot announcers who, as always, mispronounced Appalachian State about 50 times in the broadcast.

have little knowledge and understanding about the NFL. but, geez... "And Why They'll Be Back". that's just asking for them never returning to the Super Bowl.
