I have a feeling there is going to be a lot of "talk" this deadline and not a lot of action.

If Wallace and Crawford leave Portland, I'm sure that would completely eliminate the possibility of us signing Batum in the offseason. It was only a slight chance to begin with, but this might bode well for the value of that pick that they owe us???

I knew Portland was gonna suck soon. That '13 first for Wallace isn't such a horrid deal that RealGMers made it out to be. Thats gonna be a nice pick. Whats the protection on it again?

Bobcats receive the Blazers' 2013 first-round pick (top 12 protected in the 2013, 2014, and 2015, and unprotected in 2016) (Gerald Wallace trade 02-24-2011).
Hopefully they suck next season, but only enough to land at the #13 spot of the draft!

I might be wrong, but I don't think there was any protection on this pick.

You really think they will move us before New Orleans ?

Bassman wrote:Whatever develops I think it will be interesting to see how Cho and company play this out. If indeed Howard waives his option, it is reported that the Nets still want to position the team to build around Deron Williams. That could mean they still want to clear cap space for next season versus standing pat and waiting for Howard the following year.
We've discussed the pros and cons of pulling the trigger on a Diaw for the Houston pick and rental players. I lean toward saying yes but my friend dmutumbo is against it. If we keep the cap space, what player could we realistically have a shot at aquiring after this season? I'd love to get Batum, but did the Blazers not take their qualifying offer on him?
Lastly, what is to become of DJA? I would hope we can make a deal to move him for a pick or a young player. Any place we could package he and Tyrus for a pick and a player?
Its a close call for me Bass. The Houston pick is enticing but 8 mil in cap space next year is as well.
On the FA front, you’re right that there really isn’t a lot out there. Hibbert who would be the ultimate prize IMO is all but certain to stay in Indy.
The only other two FA’s that would appeal to me are Batum, who you mention and Wilson Chandler
Portland did QO Batum so they'll have right of first refusal on letting him go. Some team will really have to overbid on him to make Portland blink. I like Batum at 6-7 mil per season but not at 10 mil - and some team will probably pay him that or more.
He's a long wiry defender and a fantastic shooter when left open but he has no ability to create his own offense. Even when you look as some of his career best games on you tube (i.e. Port vs. Denver where he had a career high 33 pts with 9 threes), nearly all of his offense comes on uncontested jumpers from being open or losing his man off screens and fast breaks.
Assuming we win the lotto and draft Anthony Davis, I would much prefer we target Wilson Chandler who has shown some evidence of being able to serve as a go-to guy of sorts. He’s shown that he can provide production very similar to Rudy Gay and can likely be signed for 40% less than what Gay is being paid. He’s also a year younger. He rebounds, defends with tenacity, is a 40% free throw shooter and most importantly, is capable of creating his own shot. If we signed him to the maximum permissible deal of 4 years, we’d have him from age 24-28.
I’m confident Chandler could average 20/7/3/1.5 on 45% shooting if made the focal point of the offense on a team consisting of.
Walker
Hendo
Chandler
Davis
Biyombo
Now if we end up drawing #3 in the lotto and have to settle for a Barnes or Kidd-Gil, then a Chandler FA signing doesn’t make as much sense.
Assuming we cant attract any FA’s with the cap space, it will still be valuable from the trade facilitation side of things.
A few years ago, we got a 26 year old Jason Richardson by simply giving up the draft rights for Brandon Wright. People tend to downplay that now since Richardson is now on the downside of his career but back in 2007, he was a fringe Allstar in the prime of his career who averaged 21.8ppg 5.4 reb 3.1 assists, 1.4 steals on 44% shooting and over 40% shooting from beyond the arch with high volume. I’m fairly certain htats the highest ppg average in our franchise history. The only reason things didn’t work out better was the Sam Vincent coaching disaster and the fact that Richardson and Wallace weren’t surrounded with better talent.
At any rate, the point I’m sloppily getting around to making is that such a deal would not have been possible had it not been for our cap situation. I’m certain there were likely several other teams who would have gladly traded for JRich at that time had they only been able to absorb his deal.
A similar opportunity could present itself to us this off season if we’re prepared cap-wise to facilitate.
If the FO sees someone they really like in the 15-20 range in the draft that they otherwise would have targeted with the Houston pick (assuming we’d even draw it this year), there would be nothing the prevents Cho from trying to acquire a selection in the range through other channels that would cost less than $8mil in money and forgone cap space.

Lol.
We dumped Gerald at a good time. I mean, we should have done it earlier than what we did but still.

Well his value has went down in a year. People said we did a horrible trade by taking two first-round picks and cap relief. Looks like Portland is only getting one first-round pick and two mediocre role players in return.

About all i see coming down is DJ to LA for Blake and a first may be . Don't see much hope to move Diaw except some kind of three way deal. Though standing pat is much better than taking on crap.

Poor Nets fans.
They're probably going from Dwight Howard to Gerald Wallace. I'd be pissed too.

If Portland really is blowing it up, I dont see us getting that pick any time soon. On the bright side, it could be a home run 4 years from now
