numbers don't lie, eyes could be deceiving..... PJ really has not defended well except a couple of good stops by banging big bodies, Lamb was not bad in defense, he had some lapses, but overall he has been pretty solid, his length along would make any perimeter players uncomfortable...

Hi Roy, this is just a method of converting the basic player game stats into a figure to compare how much each player has contributed to the team per game.

This is still works in progress and I am not happy with some parts of my equation but it is normalized against the playing time of each player.

If you see the bottom figures (which are averaged contribution points over several games), the way to read it is that our top player at the moment is still Kemba

I am not quite happy with the way it's over-rewarding efficient scorers (for very short time-played) - so I may need to tweak the scale for points scored by adjusting value of points scored (adjusted for time on-court i.e. instead of just blindly *100 it would be a part of the 100 i.e. if the player only plays 10 minutes, it ought to be 10/48 *100)

I posted this in the game thread in response to something fatlever wrote. But, I thought it was interesting enough to post on here also.

The unit with the most mins. played together is the usual starting line-up + Jefferson. They have a net rtg. of 10.9.
The unit with the second most mins. played together is the usual starting line-up + Cody. They have a net rtg. of negative 9.

There are 18 lineups in the NBA that have played more mins. than the starters+Al, and only 3 have a higher net rtg.
Of those 18 lineups, only 1 team has a worse net rtg. than the starters + Cody.

So far this season Al has been a huge boost for the starters while Cody has been a disaster. So hopefully, Al is what we need to stabilize the team chemistry and we start winning again when he gets back.

Summary, this is a bit of what I feared with Jefferson went out... We could not afford to keep PJ in the starting lineup when we replaced Al with Cody. We went from having 4 players who could score, down to 3 (2.5 the way Marvin has been playing) and had less of a need for PJs supposed 3pt threat to pull defenders away from Al. Also, adding Cody reduced the need to have PJ's defense. In hindsight, Clifford should have gone with Lamb or Lin as a starter during this stretch.

One thing I noticed, that Hornets as a whole had pretty low post/paint/elbow touches in the league. and Among those touches, usually almost half of them went to AI. So AI's presence helped to balance the team offense. Cody might defend better, but he simply could not fill that role of AI, thus the starter's offense is not balanced with Cody.

In the 11 games without AI, the team did not drop the number of touches in low post/paint/elbow area, rather Cody's touch increased some, and then filled up by: Hawes, Kaminsky, Hansbrough, Lin and Lamb, notice all these are bench players. Kemba increased a bit of touches in those area, Batum and William did not change much.

What I feel is that Cody is not strong enough and do not have good enough finish under the basket, and then the other big William really not playing that role in front. He might help to stretch out in 3pt shooting, but we got really weak inside.

I guess none of us realized the progress Kaminsky had, really wish we had started Kaminsky instead of Williams to balance that inside game while AI was not playing.

When AI was playing, both 1st and 2nd team were pretty balanced in both inside and outside game. The second team had weaker inside with Hawes and Cody, but both Lin and Lamb were pretty good guard in driving and Lin is better dishing inside. The 1st team, Kemba drive, but he usually don't pass much when he drive, (he did better this season), Batum don't drive, but he could pass to cutters or whom could finish good inside, so complement well with AI, but don't see that going well with Cody, as he could not hold his place well and could not finish as well.

Updating after Game 28 - Making adjustments to the calculations

Having thought through and looking through the stats, I realized that the original method had over-rewarded efficient shooters. I have decided to make a tweak to adjust the score for efficient shooters - but there should still be some kind of reward for being efficient - so I have opted for a model in which the player who maintain efficiency for a longer period gets better reward. i.e. if a player is as efficient for 20 minutes as another player who only does so for 10 minutes - his points for shooting is essentially doubled. With the adjustments - I would not need a minimum 10 minutes playing time for computation - this then presented an opportunity to get more averages for most of our players.

As such - I have re-computed the contributions points (which becomes lower but should theoretically not be subjected to wild swings anymore - so here are the re-computed Games 1 to Game 28 scores for our players and averages (more than 5 games):

With the adjustments I think it better reflects the ability of our players and perhaps present a clearer picture of our players' contribution so far to the team. Comments and feedback are always welcomed.

Note: interestingly Frank being a rookie has gradually improved (1st 5Gav being 5 and by game 25 he is at 10) - that shows his growth as a rookie. I still can't see why the coach sees Hairston as someone useful (although he did buck up the last few games but his 25 game average is no different from when he started).

I;m not sure how many games it has been, but in 41 attempts PJ has upped his points by 3. He is still last but it does show how well he has been playing this month.

Interesting fact of the day - in the month of December CHA is a borderline top 10 in FG% differential for FGs within 6 feet. Our rank is essentially unchanged from the month of November.

Playing around with the various team defense tracking stats on the NBA website, I'm surprised to learn that we haven't really had any significant dropoff in ranking in any of the various categories in the month of December. Expected different.
