Other than Hot Rats and the occasional live show, I haven't listened to too much of Zappa.

Checking this out now:

Love all the Zappa material on Spotify, could definitely do a deep dive on this.

Oh man, you picked the best one of that series. That #2 Helsinki Concert is the ****. Roxy and Elsewhere is probably my all-time favorite Zappa album, same band lineup. I put 61 songs on my Zappa spotify playlist last night and still only about halfway done. LOL. I was deeeeeep in that rabbit hole. Listened to Zappa for about 5 straight hours last night.

I don't think I've ever heard a bad Sample in a Jar solo. Was listening to a show tonight (one of the 98 shows that they released officially) and the version on there is fantastic.

fatlever wrote:OK hip hop fans, I need your help. I am in the process of making an old school hip hop mix on Spotify. I need some suggestions. If you guys have been paying attention over the years, you'll know I am not a huge rap/hip hop fan. That being said, the few things I like, I really like. Some of the stuff I do like for reference include songs from: Jurassic 5, Blackalicious, Talib, Pharcyde, Dangermouse, Fort Knox Five, Brand New Heavies, older Snoop, late 80s, early 90s, even some of the early gangsta stuff. Songs with a melody, funny lyrics or smart lyrics or lyrics that tell a story. I get annoyed by idiot lyrics about bragging, guns and money. Real instruments are always a plus, but not required. Melody and hooks. OK, so if you could recommend one or two songs that I just must include on this mix, what would you suggest? Give me the best of the best suggestions, not a list of 10 songs. Doesn't have to be super underground stuff, I might like well known classics just as much as the obscure stuff. Just assumed I have been living in a cave for the past 30 years and know nothing.

OK go...

Any old school heads need to hear this:

Subterranean - Central Magnetizm [full album]

So, Iceland is surprisingly a bastion of hip hop and while they mostly rap in Icelandic these days, back in '97 this album came out and damn if it doesn't sound like something that could have been dropped during the Golden Era.

Free > David Bowie > Cities > David Bowie

Fantastic. Nice funky jam in Free, very exploratory David Bowie with a brilliant segue into and back out of Cities. Had never heard this before, and to me it's Phish at their best.

Really funny segment on XM Starting Lineup this morning with Frank Isola & Brian Scalabrine critiquing Iman Shumpert's new rap song, and comparing other rap songs by bb players. Apparently Shumpert mentions everyone on the Cavs and even beat reporters, but not David Blatt. Scandalous. They remorselessly made fun of Lance's rap song, cackling with laughter about the line, "If you want to win coach, pass me the rock," and Isola saying he loved the 24 second clock going off at one point because Lance was pounding the rock. One caller said Tony Parker sounded like Milli Vanilli looked lol. Damian Lillard's was the favorite with Scal & most callers. Isola thought Jason Kidd was horrible, but Scal said it was vintage 90s West Coast chill.
