I hope Weber beat him out now. I don't want this super negative net should be out of the NBA playing overseas MCW playing anything near significant minutes for us because I want us to go to the playoffs.

I might be the only one that thinks Weber is better than MCW

No you're not. Finally something we can both agree on.

The production of other FA point guards in Charlotte's range can be grabbed off the street for the vet minimum whenever.

Or....we are signing defensive minded PGs because we want to play Monk but know he needs help on that end? Have you seen a better option at PG that went to a new team for the MLE?

And last offseason Roy Hibbert was the strong inside presence and rim protector that we needed. Its possible to manufacture positive spin for just about any player.

Hibbert was dominant the first time we saw him, then got hurt and never recovered.

It's one thing to spin, it's another to **** on him with nothing to support it.

About the worst news possible but he's an expiring deal, obviously we are looking to trade midseason before the deadline. Zero chance we go into the postseason without a backup PG when we are 'all in' with Dwight

Heh. I was just perusing this thread to see if this meant you guys were dropping Briante as I'd love to see him on the Warriors again. :)

I'd absolutely take him over MCW as well.

I've seen the takes about how MCW was about as good as could be expected given the market & Hornet's cap space.
I've seen the "he's a good defender and will help Monk there" / "he's tall and can play with Kemba" takes.
I've seen the "low risk" takes based on 1 year contract.

My problems are these:
1. The team now has WAY too many guys who can't shoot 3s.
2. There is no evidence that Monk is going to be so bad on D that he literally needs a roster built to compensate.
3. Hornets already had a defensive PG.
4. With a 1 year contract the team is going to be in the same position next year in regards to needing a backup for Kemba.
5. MCW has been legitimately bad on the offensive end of the court and hasn't always shown good effort.
6. This is a win now year and MCW is really a developmental player. I would rather have seen Monk & the rest of the 2nd unit paired with a PG with more experience.

I would feel way better about MCW if Lamb was a better catch and shoot guy who made more 3s ... or the team didn't already have MKG & Dwight who already potentially will create space problems.

Bottom line for me is that I wanted a PG that could shoot.

I will take some of this back if the team finds another shooter, even if that means cutting Weber (whom I like, but am not that attached to).

Edit: and I still say that I hope MCW proves me wrong.
My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody

Dont get me wrong I think this was a good signing for what we got him for, but I am very high on Weber.

He isn't what I expected for us to sign but I like the deal and I think he'd fit well with Kemba and Malik.

MCW basically signed for Brian Roberts money, i.e. a 3rd point guard contract. If necessary we can always trade for an upgrade before the deadline. But we might not have to if Weber keeps impressing and Monk/MCW are better than expected.

Being a Syracuse Orange fan my entire life, I've seen just about every game since 1995 (born in 1992 lol). MCW was definitely overrated throughout college/during the draft process. He surprised me with getting ROY, as I didn't really see a good pro at that point, but definitely had a promising rookie season. At this point, he's a fringe rotation player on just about every team, but he has good size, defensive tools and meh BBIQ...his offensive game leaves a bit to be desired but when he has confidence he is pretty good.

That being said, I hope you were joking by saying Ramon > MCW. Pretty significant upgrade for many reasons. MCW will be hungry to prove he's worth a decent contract next time he's up for one. He isn't really ideal, but he's young, talented, and "should" have a chip on his shoulder. Essentially a poor man's Livingston, who is arguably the best backup PG in the association.

It's a B+ signing as far as I'm concerned. Going to be pulling for him to succeed. Oh, and also a clear upgrade from Weber, but Briante is a cool 3rd string PG to have on a cheap deal.

this is the signing i expected all along, but for cheaper. i think this is about as good as we could have expected considering the market and our cap space. just run offense and play defense, give the ball to frank, monk, lamb and cody and get out of the way.

funnily enough I was thinking about our back point guard situation last night and was thinking with the list of teams chasing MCW and Hornets desperately trying to stay under the tax, I thought he might be out of our $ range. I guess the likelihood of minutes here encouraged him to sign.

Come on, lets not act like there isn't any prior evidence that MCW isn't a good player. I'm not saying he is completely useless. The defense is real. However, I feel that we really needed to try to use the full MLE to get an actual backup PG (or a wing that will allow Monk to play PG), not sign another 3rd stringer for super cheap so we can stay under the tax apron. MCW is basically a taller version of Weber, but with bad intangibles. Sure, hes fine value for 3 million and at least not old, so he could possibly improve, but otherwise he isn't at all what we need imo. I have a feeling it will be like two months into the season before we're all back to talking about how we desperately need to address the backup PG situation again.

I'm not even actually upset with the signing. I'm upset that it looks like we aren't going to fully utilize the MLE. I guess I am reacting prematurely, though. There are still some wings we could sign that would make this moot.

Is that injury or just sucking bad enough to not play or both?

The last thing we need is more injury prone players.
