Melo's shooting was a surprise to all. As a prospect, nobody thought he'd be a great shooter and he was mostly characterized as a low percentage chucker

Remind me when Melo was considered and elite outside shooter?

Literally every predraft thing on him says he has NBA range but it just isn't falling at the rate you want it to. He was getting comparisons to Jason Kidd as big points who can't shoot. I just went back through 5 different ones and they all questioned the consistency of his shot. I mean I know Scoot has not looked good but Melo was not being touted either. I think Melo was better than Scoot is now at shooting but he had a long way to go coming in and did it. I think his drive helped him and I would hope Scoot is the same way.

Melo shot 35% as a rookie on 5 attempts. Scoot would need to double his attempts and that was with Melo playing under 30mpg.

Scoot shot 2.7 attempts in 30 MPG, not exactly a huge difference. Especially since he'd be playing next to one of the best setup guys in the league.

Would be interesting to see what his C&S stats are.

I'm not going to act like I can read LaMelo's mind, but one of the nice things about him that make me worry less about his lack of leadership is that he seems like he has a specific personality that will make it easy for him to get along with other good players.

He seems like a dude that likes the spotlight, but doesn't mind other people getting in on the action and he seems like he just gets along with everyone and has a team/player friendly way about him. Maybe it goes back to coming up with Lonzo and being used to playing with a strong leader.

I kind of doubt he would do the thing Fox did when they drafted Haliburton and pout about it even though they were a perfect basketball fit, but ya never know I guess. I think as long as he gets to keep being himself and making tons of plays he will be fine.

I don't think it would work, but at this point I wish that they would offer Jay Triano a competitive offer to be their lead assistant (assuming they won't fire Clifford) and sort of dangle the possibility of competing for the HC job to sweeten the offer. The Triano offensive system with Scoot/LaMelo/Bridges/PJ/Mark, seems kind of bonkers (pretty dope with Miller too).

Scoot will have to shoot a lot of 3's with confidence, otherwise he's in the Westbrook/Eric Bledsoe tier. Unless he just has incredible scoring ability like Wade or pre-injury Rose then it won't matter much as long as three other shooters are out there.

Jonathan Givony mentioned in a segment that LaMelo and Scoot are friends off the court. I doubt that will be a big factor in who we end up taking, but I think it puts to bed the worry about LaMelo disapproving of us taking Scoot.

Dudes friends with Melo. And apprentice of Curry. Considered a generational good PG prospect. The fact that this pick is a question make no sense at all

MKG was best friends with Kyrie. I heard that was the reason we took him haha.

Cool. Makes zero sense as Kyrie was not the star of our team

Scoot can't shoot. Sounds like a tag line to something. Kemba couldn't either. But he MADE himself into a good shooter. Will Scoot learn to shoot if it kills him? Or will it kill him?

Lamelo shot 25% in the NBL on 6.7 attempts per game at roughly the same age as Scoot. The NBL three point line is not NBA range.

I agree volume is a concern and you can't assume every prospect will improve as much as Lamelo or Kemba did from their pre-NBA days.

My issue with Lamelo's shooting form was everything below the waist. His footwork and positioning were just terrible. But if you're terrible the same way over and over, you become Jim Furyk.

Henderson's form isn't bad nor is it broke. It's just...soft. That part of his game doesn't agree with the rest. But I argue his shooting from range won't be as important his first three years as his efficiency at the rim. That's where he'll eat.

Scoot doesn't need to be a great shooter. If he can get to 35% and make his FT's, that should be good enough. He's in the Morant/Rose build.

As a guard, he absolutely DOES need to be a great shooter.

EXACTLY. Just like this guy who shoots 32% from 3 in his career and just over 30% this past season.

He's more concerned with shooting off the court

I mean, Kidd and Payton weren't great shooters either, I wouldn't say its essential. Just need to be decent

Both were much bigger and played in an era when shooting wasn't prioritized. By that logic, Magic wasn't a great shooter either and he did just fine.

Also, Payton was perhaps the best defensive PG in history and Kidd was a career 35% from three and got significantly better as the league changed as well (36.5% average over his last 10 years in the league).

Guard centric teams are already at a disadvantage and this team is already horrendous at shooting as it currently stands. Adding yet another guy to the lineup who can't shoot is a serious concern that needs to be addressed.

I refuse to believe "he doesn't need to be a good shooter". That's just silly
