Probably because it would quadruple the space that the board's database requires which means a hell of a lot more money to operate. Not to mention, for as old as this forum software is, it is still decently fast. Disabling PM's and other features keeps it that way. RealGM is probably one of the largest active forums in this style out there on the internet....most others (like ESPN and CNN) switched to comment systems and ditched the forum format.
