Re: 99 Problems: The PJ Washington Jr. Thread
34 players in the NBA averaging at least 15 ppg and under the age of 25. (Again not some wacked out filter.)
PJ is doing it inefficiently, but still has a better EFG% this season than 8 of those guys.
The 8- Mathurin, Banchero, Keldon, KPJ, Ivey, RJ Barrett, Trae and Cade.

This probably makes up such a small percentage of his attempts that the numbers are skewed from a handful of makes/misses.
He needs to be better, but I bet this is one of those stats that doesn't look nearly as bad with more data.
PJ scoring 22+ in 3/4 games. Melo back really helps him in a ton of ways.

Not that hard to look up - https://www.nba.com/stats/player/1629023/shots-dash
Makes up 90% of his threes.
He's just been bad until very recently.

Player A at 24 years old:
15.1 pts 4.9 reb 2.3 ast 0.9 stl 1.1 blk 1.6 turnovers 34% from 3, .529 true shooting %
Player B at 24 years old:
14.3 pts 5.6 reb 4.9 ast 1.2 stl 1.1 blk 2.6 turnovers 37% from 3, .566 true shooting %
Player A is PJ Washington. Those are role player numbers and hopefully we have learned our lesson about paying big money for that.

This makes me question the tracking of this stat.
PJ shoots plenty of contested threes, so not sure how this is tracked.
They also have LaMelo shooting 97.5% of his threes either 4-6 feet/6+ feet open. There is just no way.

Disagree, my eye test says neither Melo nor PJ normally shoot contested 3s. If Melo is getting perimeter pressure, he's attacking off the dribble. PJ just doesn't command a lot of attention on the perimeter.

Yeah according to this stat the Hornets team shoots 1 three every 5 games where a defender is within 2 feet of them.
Apparently Oubre, LaMelo and PJ haven't attempted a single three that meets that criteria... all season long.
If that makes sense to you, then sure trust all the other stats. but legit makes no sense to me when I see Oubre shoot with a hand in his face several times a game.

Guys tend to not shoot threes when the defender is in their face so it's not that crazy to me to think that could be true.
45.8% of Oubre's shots are with his defender 2-4 ft - https://www.nba.com/stats/players/shots-closest-defender?TeamID=1610612766&CloseDefDistRange=2-4+Feet+-+Tight
I suspect there's probably some daylight between the tracking stats being perfect and completely worthless and totally inaccurate.

I will agree not totally worthless, but my argument is if the 0-2 feet is off tracking wise, that filters down to the next level and the next.

The Hornets should treat PJ the way the Pacers did Myles Turner the last two years. Demand two 1sts and likely just end up resigning him.

Hunter signed an extension for 4/90... 22 million per year. Can someone explain statistically why it doesn't make sense to pay PJ 15 million after looking at this?
I have not heard one person complain about Hunter being a bad contract or Hawks looking to dump him, negative value crap...

Re: 99 Problems: The PJ Washington Jr. Thread
PJ at 15M is a no-brainer
PJ at 20M is someone we should be trying to S&T (or match but trade early in the contract), but wouldn't let walk away for nothing
PJ at 25M is a bad bad contract

Re: 99 Problems: The PJ Washington Jr. Thread
I don't think I'd mind PJ at 20m assuming his 3pt% continues to tick back up now that LaMelo is back to create offense, which probably needs to happen for him to get 20m anyways. I would be perfectly fine with 4/70.
PJ is a nice starting level combo big that shoots 3s, plays defense, passes a little bit, and hasn't quite started to enter his prime yet. He fits the LaMelo timeline and playstyle perfectly. Hes the type of player this team should be trying to keep.

I just wish he was a better rebounder. He's definitely played well lately though.

I don't think his rebounding issues are a big deal for this team long term. Mark is averaging like 16 rebounds per 36 right now. LaMelo is a good rebounder for a guard. If Miles comes back hes a good rebounder as a SF. If they move on from Rozier they can easily get more size in the starting lineup (they could anyways).
