Re: Sale Confirmed: The Michael Jordan Thread
The "economic Terrorist" angle is kind of weak. Just because people don't like what you do doesn't mean it was a sound business strategy. He was very good at what he did and made a lot of money for a lot of people. What people don't mention is the trick that was pulled on the market didn't just hurt him and the wealthy but also attacked a lot of pension and retirement funds that were in there because he was good at what he did. He seems to be a smart guy and I hope that means he will bring the right people in to get the results all the fans want.

Well thats fun.
NBA board of governors is no rubber stamp. They could push for a different mix depending on disturbing backgrounds.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

MJ Sells the Team
So MJ just sold the team for $3 billion. I figured there should be a thread to discuss that. Apparently Gabe Plotkin and Rick Schnall bought the shares.

Re: Sale Confirmed: The Michael Jordan Thread
No issue with anything he said.
I think most all of us agree that he oversaw fantastic work on the business side of the house.
His downfall has always been the basketball side.
Had he gone out hired folks at the top and given them autonomy to run ops without micromanaging or dealing with cronies, then his ownership tenure would be viewed in a very positive light.
He got in his own way and hired too many unqualified friends and family and never had a coherent vision for team or culture building.
My hope in him retaining a minority stake is he'll serve as the Ringer who secures business deals and partnerships and works as a "brand ambassador" of sorts.
Reality is he's probably just maintaining a stake to keep an investment in the growth while he moves on to racing or gin or whatever other projects. I have a feeling he's burnt out from all the failure and doesn't want to deal with it anymore

He's not totally gone given that he's staying as a minority owner.

Re: Sale Confirmed: The Michael Jordan Thread
The biggest thing I want from this sale is an organization that runs based on meritocracy and not just being "someone MJ trust". I'm a UNC grad and love MJ, Mitch Kupchak and Buzz Peterson, but clearly Mitch and Buzz were not hired as the best possible candidates. They were hired because they were cool with MJ and while they have not done a horrible job, a more deserving hire could have done a LOT better.

This is the best thing about MJ selling the team. Buzz seems like a decent guy, but he is in no way qualified to be a NBA GM/PoBO. And we all know he was likely getting the job when Kupchak retired. The guy cheated off my uncle when they were at UNC together. He also would have been a MJ yes man through and through.
Now when Mitch retires we're much more likely to hire a competent professional that will bring in other professionals rather than their buddies. The importance of that cannot be overstated.

The new ownership should keep the current medical staff. Those guys are great.

Sarcasm? The Hayward and Martin injuries have been handled very poorly and they were constantly wrong with forecasting how long guys would be out for.

I meant to post this yesterday, but has anyone seen the new trailer for the GameStop movie called Dumb Money? Seth Rogen plays our new owner Gabe Plotkin.

Oh wow. Just put two and two together. Was watching 'Gamestop: Rise of the Players' doc the other night and it went completely past me that Plotkin was our Plotkin. Looking forward to Dumb Money.
