"Flat Out Boring": The Frank Kaminsky Thread

Post#642 » by BigSlam » Mon Jun 29, 2015 7:38 pm

Is he a chance at RoY?

If he can beat Marv and Cody out for the starting PF spot by Christmas he should be s front runner - right?

Plus, being a senior and decorated college player he is widely considered the most NBA ready rookie.

Right?

I doubt he wins it but he will be in the mix. He is one that will be top 5 year one and then likely drop further and further down the list as the other players develop.

I don't think Frank will get enough mins to put up the numbers required for ROY. He'll be battling a lot of guys for playing time. ROY will go to the rookie who starts from day 1 on a bad team, plays 30+ mpg and puts up empty stats, same as always.

So Rick was on FNZ today and of course discussed Frank (he also said a source he trusts told him the Celtics trade thing was just Ainge covering for himself, if that wasn't obvious enough).

Probably the most interesting point was related to Kaminsky declaring himself a 4 at the NBA level prior to the draft. Apparently Cliff told him not to sell himself short, and that he'll see time at both the 4 and 5.

Starting to wonder if Frank isn't our C of the future.

I wouldn't call those advanced stats. They are situational stats, which means you are looking at only a small number of the plays in an already small season (NCAA). Additionally, looking at where Frank "ranks" among draft prospects is comparing a senior to a lot of freshman and sophomores.

Let's see how he fares when he's in the nba, and when we look at his entire defensive impact rather than focusing on a few select situations.

None of this is meant to imply he's a bad defender. I really have no idea - never seen him play. But nothing in that article is convincing at all to me, and I'm a bit of a stathead.

I honestly don't know why half of this board even posts here, many of you guys trash literally every non-MKG player on this team and talk about how much you hate the franchise. If you hate them that much, just leave.

If you think Frank sucks and aren't willing to give him 1/15 of the chance you gave Biz, just leave. It just makes no sense to be grossly unfair to some guys because of emotional attachments to certain other players. Give the guy a damn season or two to develop. Good Lord.

People will come around on Kaminsky and the hate will dissipate. He was just the next thing to draw the attention of the rage of this tortured fanbase. Everyone thinks he'll be at least decent. Everyone is just mad at all the recent circumstances surrounding this team and he just happened to get caught up in it.

You have to care about something to let it cause you anger. The reason people get so mad about the team is the same reason they keep following it. People care about the players and the Hornets name, but are frustrated to death with management and ownership.

I think we'd be a little happier with him if he don't come a lot the expense of vonleh AND Biz and drafted in front of Winslow while we had multiple redundant players. It just made no sense.

I'm a fan. I'm now glad we've replaced Biz and Vonleh with him and I'm glad we passed on Winslow. That move was worth it.

Yeah, we should have drafted Winslow.

If he pans out we'll get to laugh at USA Today.

27. Charlotte Hornets: Seriously, MJ? Even if Frank Kaminksy (No. 9) pans out to reach his full NBA potential as a soft-shooting big man who poses matchup nightmares, this was a little too high for the national player of the year in the NCAA. Grade: D+

In all honesty a future lineup of Kemba-Batum-MKG-Zeller-Kaminsky could be VERY good.

I think Zeller is gonna go back to his natural position which will be center. Zeller was never a stretch 4 in college, I've never seen that in his game. He said in the pre draft that he could or would play it if needed, but the guy is a center, he's 7ft tall, he jumps out the gym, he's got a strong physique, we should have been had Ewing teaching this guy how to play inside. That's another knock on our developmental team for forcing Cody to play a role he isn't suited for. Also, Frank didnt seem very strong inside against the college players, Cody did. Cody is a better rebounder, more athletic, stronger and probably a stronger finisher inside, putting him in his natural position should only help him.

I agree with most of this but Cody is in no way, shape or form a stronger finisher inside than Frank. He wasn't in college, he isn't now and he never will be. He gets knocked on his ass repeatedly and had to lead the league in falling down last season. He can play some D, but he gets his shots packed and falls on his ass most of the time he tries to go up strong. And in the rare cases he doesn't get posterized by a defender, the shot doesn't fall. Cody has strengths, but that isn't one of them.

Agreed. Cody was a finesse 5 in college using quicks and athleticism to get by defenders, usually from high post. Frank posted up down low more but also floated around the perimeter more, his game is ideally suited for Clifford's PF. Cody has gotten strong enough to play with smaller centers.

Agreed with you and ball teacher.

I think that's definitely how he'll be used offensively. Cody does have far better lateral quickness though so to me it makes sense for him to guard more perimeter oriented bigs.
