This is such an awesome matchup. Magic vs. Lebron is one of my basketball fantasies and I think they're damn near perfect foils for each other.

Starters

Magic vs. LeBron is honestly a push in my mind. I'm not old enough to have watched Magic live, but LeBron is the one guy I see being able to neutralize him skill-for-skill.

Iverson vs. Deron is a fun one too. It's clear to most that Deron is one of my favorite players in the league and that I hold him in very high regard. But Iverson is so dynamic that I have to give him the advantage in this one.

Mullin vs. Durant is another matchup of similar guys. I think while Mullin does a lot of things, Durant adds a lot of the same things but also gives you more athleticism and size. Durant gets the advantage here.

Chambers vs. McHale is an easy one for me. They have a clash of styles, but I have enough faith in McHale, simply on the basis that he's a better player, to give him the edge.

Ewing vs. Mourning is interesting as well and I honestly didn't have enough info to know for sure. So I turned to bballref. They split the H2H 11-11, had similar production at 24/11/2 for Ewing and 21/11/3 for Mourning. No way to tell, so let's look at roles. Mourning is going to be used primarily as a defensive stopper and rebounder while Ewing is going to be featured in a more natural role so I'll give him the edge.

Key Bench

Penny over Cooper
Drazen over Crawford
Buck over McDyess
Sampson over Biedrins.

Edge goes to fats and his deeper bench, but if Slam can turn it into a drag it out slug fest, they could have a chance in a series. One game, I give it to fats 120-108

Don't have the time to go into it now, but I have to say that the major reason for going with team Fats is his advantage when comparing both benches. The starting lineups are kind of equal, with a good match-up in Bron vs. Magic (Bron would be a top5 guy you could choose for guarding Magic, but honestly, I don't think you could stop him at his prime going down the floor in his 6'8" body) and I would love to see Durant and Mully scoring against each other.

All this "Team Slam has no bench" stuff is baloney.

Buck Williams was a NBA Rookie of the Year, NBA All-Rookie First Team, All-NBA Second Team, 3× NBA All-Star, 2× NBA All-Defensive First Team, 2× NBA All-Defensive Second Team and an 18ppg/12rpg/2apg player.

Coop was a 5× NBA champion, NBA Defensive Player of the Year, 5× NBA All-Defensive First Team and 3× NBA All-Defensive Second Team member.

Kiki Vandeweghe was a 2x All Star and a 29ppg/5rpg/3apg player.

Crawford was a 6th man of the year and a 21ppg/3rpg/4apg player.

Eddie Johnson was a 6th man of the year and a 22ppg/4rpg/2apg player.

Avery was a 13ppg, 10apg point guard on an NBA Championship team.

Vinnie was called the Microwave for a reason and a 16ppg/3rpg/4apg player.

No bench my ring hole......

I have nothing against Buck, Cooper or Vinnie.

But Kiki Vandeweghe played in the perfect era to shoot his mid-range jumpers and play absolutely no defense in games that ended 130-120. Don't let his stats fool you.

If you call Jamal Crawford a 21/3/4 player, the odds that that team was good are pretty poor. He has a great skillset, but twenty years from now we'll remember him as a jacker. Again, don't let the stats fool you.

Eddie Johnson was a great role player, but again don't overstate the stats - he did put up those on a bad Kansas City team. A great third best guy to have on your team, not at the level of being a best or second best player.

Avery a 13/10 guy on a championship team? I don't have time to look all of this stuff up (since Swedd hasn't posted his take on this yet, I hope that you guys don't mind that I come in tomorrow when I have more free time to post some thoughts on the series myself), but I don't believe that he even put those numbers up on the "taking for Duncan" season. Not to downplay the little general, but he could have easily not made the NBA. The '99 and '03 Spurs rosters make Tim Duncan seem even more underrated.

I have a feeling people are going to vote for Lamar on the "He has MJ" basis, but hear me out on his matchup below

Payton vs. Isiah
Comparable offense (Isiah) and defense (Payton) but Isiah is a better defender than Payton is offensively, and is just better overall. Edge Swedd

MJ vs. Whoever
I can be totally honest, MJ is going to have an advantage against just about anyone he plays. But I think I have a squad that can throw enough defensive firepower at him to at least slow him down over the course of a game/series. His defensive ability is going to be wasted on my 5th offensive option, but he can't help off Ray to double down on Shaq or else Ray is going to off from deep.

Offensively, he's going to get a steady diet of Isiah (you know how well Isiah and Detroit beat him up) Dennis Johnson (1st NBA, 1st Defense), Latrell Sprewell (1st NBA, 2nd Defense), and even Mo Cheeks (1st Defense). They'll be fresh, physical, athletic, and will have tons of fouls to throw at him

MJ is my favorite player ever, but I think if any team could slow him down, I have some of the best guys to do it. Still though, Edge Lamar

Rodman vs. Dominique
This is a weird matchup. Nique is obviously one of the most dynamic offensive players in history.... but crap on defense, and Rodman is obviously one of the most dynamic defensive players in history.... but crap on offense. I think Nique may have more of a chance than most expect to get his points as I think Rodman is going to have to double on Shaq, but I'll give this one a push

Webber vs. Kemp
Complete difference in style, but I have faith that Kemp will take this one. Keep in mind that the Kemp I picked (95-96) outplayed Hakeem Olajuwon, Karl Malone, and Dennis Rodman in the playoffs when it counted most. Edge Swedd

Shaq vs. Whoever
99-00 Shaq was the most dominant modern player the game has seen. That year alone...

All Star
All Star game MVP
All NBA First Team
All Defense Second Team
NBA Champion
Finals MVP
NBA MVP

None of Parish, Webber, Daugherty, or Wallace are equipped to stop that. Edge Swedd

Bench Depth

Teams aren't going to be playing 15 guys every game so I'm looking at the top 4 guards/wings and top 2 bigs. That gives each team a full second unit and one extra.

-Dennis Johnson over Tim Hardaway
-Mo Cheeks over Mookie Blaylock
-Latrell Sprewell over Andrew Toney
-Walter Davis or Alex English? No idea who would get the upper hand here

-Chris Bosh over Rasheed Wallace
-Brad Daugherty or Larry Nance? Can't decide between two guys who were most effective as teammates

Overall, what I think it boils down to is my team's ability to stop Jordan and his team's ability to stop Shaq. I honestly think my team is better equipped to do its job than his and I think my deeper bench adds more as well. Swedd wins 115-108

this is definitely a tough one. Lamar has MJ and surrounded him with a great defensive team, but Shaq and Kemp are just going to bully this **** out of them.

The biggest issue I have with Swedd's team is that I think Nique and Kemp will both want to be top scorers. It should be the Isiah/Shaq show but I think they will mess with that by forcing shots and trying to "get their own". Loved watching them play, but I don't like them as winning team mates.

Just my opinion, but I give Lamar the win in a tough battle.

Before drafting them, we sat both guys down and made sure they were okay with being option #2 and #3. They wholeheartedly agreed to it in the best interest of winning a title.

I think Wilkins hated the fact that he had by far the worst supporting cast of any of his contemporary stars and had to go into hero mode. In a setting like this, I think he'll relish the opportunity to not have to be the hero every night.

Isiah is the master of making his teammates happy and DJ is the master of keeping his teammates in line. Kemp will be fine catching lobs from Isiah in the open court and off lobs from Shaq when he draws doubles down low.

There's going to be plenty of food on the table for both guys to be effective

I think Webber > Kemp, and that Payton's probably the best defensive guard I can even remember. Jordan's probably the next best defensive guard I can remember. Your backcourt is going to get smashed. Plus Rasheed Wallace is better than Chris Bosh. Better range and defense imo

I think that Kemp could dunk on Webber and impregnate Tyra Banks at the same time.

If George Karl puts Payton on Jordan from the beginning of the 96 finals Seattle wins that series. That being said Kemp and O Neal is devastating. With them drawing all the attention down low there is no telling how many 3's Allen would bomb.

Lamar, but by a hair.

i think the MJ vs ray allen battle is closer than some might believe. prime ray was not only a great shooter, but he was explosive, athletic, had really good handles and was a excellent passer and not a shabby defender either.

still waiting to hear from lamar before i make my final judgement. once lamar posts i will add the poll... so everyone, please go vote.

We can just turn this into a debate as I'll reply to the statements you made.

Payton vs. Isiah debate
I actually think that despite the fact that Payton is probably only a top40 player, he could match up with every point guard out there just because of his height advantage and the fact that there hasn't been a point guard as complete as GP. Payton was able to just murder guards who might be better players, yet lacked the athleticism/height or whatever to match up against him. Just ask John Stockton.

Is Isiah better overall? Yes.
Do I agree with "Isiah is a better defender than Payton is offensively"? Hell no. Payton will be advancing the ball up the court in his signature hopping and backing down style, as well as he'll get opportunities to post Isiah up from to time. I think this match-up is a push.

As for Shaq - you got it wrong, man. I'll be using Gary to double team him, since Isiah was such a poor outside shooter. My bigs can't guard Shaq (although Parish was a good defender), but that's the reason I have Rodman and Jordan who will be prowling around like cheetahs ready to intercept any errand pass after GP forces Shaq to make a decision.

MJ vs. Whoever

You have a nice diet of two guards guarding MJ, I'll take that. Yes, they might slow him down a bit and Jordan isn't leaving Allen for double teams, that's true.

Rodman vs. Nique

Yep, it's a push. I have the great perimeter defender Rodman, not the guy who would camp underneath baskets for rebounds, so I can't really make an argument that Nique would forget to block him out. I just have to say one thing - I don't think that Nique is that good of a second/third option. If you watch the old Hawks games, he would come off a screen and get the ball at the elbow or further out. And then his game was to go one and one and it would take a lot of dribbling. If this would actually happen, in real life, I'd start the series with Payton doubling on Shaq, however if Isiah would be able to kill us off the dribble after receiving the ball from shaq, I'd switch to Rodman double teaming O'Neal. I don't really see Nique being a good spot up shooter, especially because he was so streaky from downtown - I honestly can't tell whether he was a good shooter or not. He could make the three with a high percentage once in a while in an era where not everybody was shooting it, however his form was so weird, most of the shots were contested and poorly selected and his percentages aren't that good.

Webber vs. Kemp

I don't like the fact that you're making this seem so lob-sided. I think that there isn't that big of a difference between them in their primes. Not to mention the fact that I have a three-headed beast at the four spot in Webber, Wallace and Walker. As far as I could tell from basketball-reference, neither of them have really feasted on the other, with the best match-up between them coming in this double overtime game:
http://www.basketball-reference.com/box ... 00WSB.html

where they both matched each other tit for tat. You might look it up on youtube, as far as I recall Webber blocked several shots by Kemp, made a three over Kemp to force OT and genuinely won the match-up, but lost the game.

I might give Kemp a slight slight advantage, but this isn't such a definite advantage to the Reign Man, in my opinion, nor is it a series changer anyway.

Shaq vs. Whoever

If this were any other center, I probably would let him score and don't let the other guys involved. Yet 99-00 Shaq is too scary, so he's probably going for some 30-15 games with GP doubling.

One minor thing I can encourage my bigs to do - run the goddamn floor. There aren't many better centers than Parish and Daugherty who could finish the fastbreak with a dunk, both of them were versatile athletes. They'll get some easy jams after we rebound the ball and push the tempo.

Bench players

Now I might let the PF thing slide, but damn when you say that Sprewell has an advantage over Andrew Toney, that's when I get pissed.

I agree that DJ is better than Tim Bug and same goes for Cheeks against Mookie, I would just like to add that I have a speed advantage in these point guard battles.

Now, Latrell Sprewell vs. Andrew Toney.... I just don't see how you can claim that this is goes to Spree. A guy with a questionable attitude who thrived on taking questionable shots against the dude who was so good against the Boston Celtics in the playoffs that he was given the nickname - Boston Strangler. I love Spree (he's probably my favorite SG of all time, btw), but he isn't no Andrew Toney. When it comes down to coming off the bench and being a great role player in the semi-finals of the playoffs, Toney clearly has the upper hand.

Davis vs. English. Two guys who proved that you just can't win a title relying on a forward who basically just scores the ball and that's it. No advantage here, both guys would just probably try to out-score each other.

I'm not seeing the Bosh over Wallace thing, as in my opinion Sheed clearly has a better skillset and he's a whole lot tougher. If anything, he would probably try to get in Bosh's head the whole series, which would lead to Sheed being tossed and this turning into a Bosh vs Walker match-up. No reason to really argue, but again I don't see why you think this is an advantage to Bosh.

Daugherty vs Nance. Well, as I told you before - Nance isn't a center. He is probably on the same level as Brad, but I see this match-up going my way just because Daugherty could use his size against Nance.

I'm not here to make a decision on who would win the series as I honestly think that even if I wasn't the creator of one of them, I just couldn't choose. Best luck to you guys who have to read Swedd's and my thoughts and decide on the better team. As for Swedd - come at me, bro.

I'm mainly just taking trash for the sake of it as I would take either team. If I lose then so be it, it was to a great team.

That said, I think people are underestimating prime Shaq for the sake of voting MJ because he's MJ. To me, it boils down to my teams ability to stop MJ and your ability to stop Shaq.

And I can 100% honestly say my stable of perimeter defenders has a better chance than your post players.
