Yeah, Over 36 Rule. He can still get a big payday after that but the rule basically negates the incentive for giving older players longer deals.

I think they weren't expecting to be this good this fast. They were preparing for a rebuild.

I like Batum's deal for you guys. I think it's a fair deal for both sides, especially considering that lesser players like Beal and (extremely overrated) Derozan got more $.

Peace

Can you not sign it if you're 36 or older or if you will turn 36 during the deal?

I'd need to revisit it but if memory serves...he can still sign a big deal but the money is amortized differently because age 36 is considered "retirement age." Any contract seasons after he turns 36 are reduced to $0 (often referred to as "N/A") and the amounts are amortized to the pre-36 years.

The problem however is that players can't exceed their max value even with this provision, so they essentially lose money if they're still max-worthy around age 32-33. Basically any contract that touches their 36th birthday is subject to the rule.

I think I held back a little bit on really embracing Batum as a Hornet because of his impending free agency. I didn't really know if he wanted to be here or if he was just playing along for a year to keep his value high then to bolt this summer.

Today he showed everyone how much he wants to be in Charlotte. He could have gone to a half-dozen teams for that per year salary, some of which were contenders, but he choose to stay with the Hornets and to continue to build something here.

The fact that this thread only has 40 pages is proof that we, as a fanbase, have not shown him enough love. I hope that changes this season.

Or he becomes the most hated Hornet of them all if he has some bad years ahead.

I hope now that Batum has committed his future to the Hornets, he can really get involved in trying to recruit some free agents here. He can start with convincing Marvin to resign quickly.

Cho has been far from perfect but he does things like negotiations well. We have yet to give out a bad contract in his tenure.

Yes, now let's get Marv back. I feel like Marv is one of those big time guys in the locker room and his leadership goes beyond what he does on the court. But this is done, in the bag, more Nic to come.

Grade for Hornets: A-

Grade for Nicolas Batum: A

An annual average of $24 million for Batum is the equivalent of a $17.8 million deal under the previous cap.

Solomon Hill just got 13M a year, and you are complaining about Lamb at 7? We all underestimated this summer.

I'm still totally fine with the Lamb deal. In this current market 7 mil for a back up wing isn't a bad deal.

It may never turn into a good deal but it's far from an albatross.
