New Yorker here: Also a Bobcat lurker...
You guys are gonna LOVE Dunlap. He is the perfect fit for a young group of guys. I also believe you guys are gonna hunt plenty of picks before this years draft so you will be starting fresh (Just guessing this but Cho looks pretty convinced in my opinion)
Gonna be a fun season for Cats fans!

Jeff Goodman @GoodmanCBS
I had limited dealings w/ him in Boston, but the guy I would compare Mike Dunlap to is Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau. Smart, quirky, obsessive.

what! that is big news if true. he is another bball guru. he was part of the army of assistants at dallas in 10-11. also another george karl connection, as he was an assistant to him in denver (and maybe seattle as well? don't know)

Guys, I love this move for the Bobcats.
BTW Gurgs was close to Melo in Denver FWIW.

trying to get a grasp of grgurich, i've learned that he was an assistant to jerry tarkanian at UNLV during their heyday. has a history of reaching "problem" players, which could be good news for tyrus.

This kind of talk, and getting Gurgs makes me feel this move is going to be very good for Charlotte. I am officially on board with this hiring.

Blue Ninja wrote:St. John's fan here. Dunlap is the perfect coach for your team. He is a great teacher and pushes guys. Great at the x's and o's. He was basically the head coach for our team this year with Lavin being out with prostate cancer.
He is known for the way he coaches up guys, doesnt take bs and doesnt get pushed by the players. This year with a team of 8 players, and 7 new guys he had to basically coach up guys and did a great job. They all improved from beginning to end of the season. Also Nurideen Lindsey transferred out because Dunlap wouldnt compromise and give him what he wanted and thats with 8 players.
I respect and acknowledge everything you said and everything he did. Still....
WTH???
I am shocked yet again by this team, and cannot believe we went this route. The guy has never been a head coach...at any level (filling in this past season is not equivalent). He may be the whole enchalada, but here we go again...starting with an unknown quantity. Per others here, MJ invites the scorn and heaping piles of dung about being cheap. I am fearful of what this guy will want at #2. If he just loves an "effort" guy like MKG (who is undersized and can't shoot), I may really be done with this team.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

Can't rely on an assistant coach to cover up for a lackluster head coach, look at Golden State with Mark Jackson who stills ruins games despite having one of the best assistant coaches in the league next to him with Malone. I can't even believe a guy like Synder would be worth much, never even heard of Dunlap

Sporting News: Who’s going to win the championship?
Larry Johnson: Man, I don’t know. I’m going to get killed for this, I want it to be Miami. I’m born and raised in Dallas, Texas. Dallas is on a roll right now. Plus, they have (a consultant) there named Tim Grgurich who was my assistant coach at UNLV when we won the championship. Then he was with the Denver Nuggets for about 10 years. He’s one of the greatest assistant coaches ever. He just doesn’t have the mentality to be a head coach. He doesn’t like to put up with the off-court friction and shenanigans. But he’s in the background, talking to players, in players’ ears.

With the hiring of Dunlap, does that mean #bobcats will take Drummond or MKG, two high-potential projects?

And yes, Im a Duke fan. Hire the best players, and coaches regardless of where they went to school.
The Charlotte Bobcats will hire Mike Dunlap to be their new head coach.
Dunlap was most recently an assistant coach with St. John's.
Quin Snyder and Brian Shaw were also finalists for the position.
Dunlap has prior NBA experience as an assistant under George Karl with the Nuggets. Karl, like Charlotte owner Michael Jordan, played at North Carolina under Dean Smith.

trashing MJ for this is funny. This is clearly not an MJ move. Larry Brown was an MJ move. This was clearly a Cho move. and Cho knows what hes doing.

Re: Mike Dunlap new Head Coach
In the main coaching thread I threw out Mike Dunlap as a joke. And I'm sure many on here did as well. I'm also sure that tomorrow everyone will be all over MJ and the Bobcats as being a joke. After my initial shock wore off, I'm actually not totally pissed at this move. The guy actually looks to me like the coach version of Cho himself. Despite people giving the Bobcats crap, the national writers all seem to be in agreement that everyone that knows Dunlap speaks very highly about him. He does seem like the type of guy that would fit this team well though. He will key in on development and will bring back the basics to this team. After the shock, I'm actually excited about this. I just hope he wasn't just hired because he will do what MJ says. I don't think that is the case though, however I do think that part of the reason he was hired is because he understands and accepts that this is a process. I'll be Sloan and Shaw didn't accept that.
Excited about the staff their talking about already though. Grgurich is very well respected in the league and also brings a wealth of experience to help Dunlap. I would also expect Silas to return and he is a good developer of talent. Really excited to see what these guys can do and hope they can prove everyone wrong. Never would had ever though I would be excited about Dunlap, but somehow I find myself sincerely excited right now. Can't really explain why, this guy just seems to be exactly the kind of coach we need. Whether he can do it in the NBA is the question, and time will tell.

In the end it comes down to him being to cheap to hire a real coach.

You know what? I think it does. I think that piece about collaborative effort from Bonnell was about Dunlap understanding this is a process and we are going to play it out. Now that they found their guy who believes and buys into the same thing, they will feel less pressure to win as fast as possible (like Shaw and Sloan would had wanted). Perhaps now they feel more inclined to take more of a chance and let a guy who develops college talent, do his thing.
