MJ net worth pushing $2bn and they're gonna pay for this by purely taxing the city. Oof

Child's play compared to when Tepper eventually tries to make the city of Charlotte finance a 3 billion dollar stadium for the Panthers. It's going to get messy.

Yeah, I agree. I don't live in Charlotte but have always wanted owners to at least pay half the bill.

Article said they'll cover any overages and also will start paying rent for the first time. Baby steps?

That's going to be a huge improvement once they renovate that bus stop. Going to be pretty baller over there.

I'm interested in seeing what happens with the epicenter

Me too. It's such an odd space, I don't see it becoming version 2.0 of itself. Really curious what happens.

Who is they? Jordan Co? If so, I don't necessarily mind that deal, assuming the rental agreement continues until they pay off the up front capital provided by the taxpayer (preferably with interest)

Also, isn't that what everyone was saying after the Epicenter was put in? I haven't been back up that way in a little bit but last I heard that whole thing fell through

[not directed at anyone, just a rant, because i'm sure lots of people in charlotte are yelling about this]

are there any examples of pro franchises fully funding arenas and arena improvements (other than small soccer stadiums)? maybe a few?
not sure why anyone is upset when this happens to a city. its the cost of having pro teams. it sucks. not fair that billionaires get away w/ it, but until the model changes (it wont), people shouldnt blame cities for paying. either you pay and have pro sports, or you dont pay and pro teams leave. there really is no viable 3rd option.

just for an outside comparison, pretty much all sports arenas in Australia are paid for by the government as well.

Moving that bus station away from the arena will be huge for that area. There's a lot of potential for some interesting stuff to be put there and where the epicenter is.

I had some great times in the epicenter in my younger days. Place got pretty damn dangerous to hang around at times a few years back though

When we took my son to his first game this past year, the Epicenter was pretty much dead. Most of the restaurants were closed due to covid. It was pretty awful. Hopefully they can revitalize it.

My last time in the Epicenter was Kemba's return game to Charlotte after going to Boston. It's a shame what's happened to it during Covid

I met Derrick Brown (UPS) there, he was getting a smoothie

Charlotte severely lacks an food identity, fixing that whole area would be a good start. Problem is its just too expensive for any "soul" places to go in there, instead the restaurants are pretentious corporate types that cater to business meetings more than tourism

Mert's is excellent and it's a great stop before a game.

Thank God David tepper wasn't apart of this or we'd be screwed
