Yeah, McRoberts should not start.
As long as we have someone better to start I agree. So who are we getting to start because no way you are thinking Zeller.

Not really even close to McBob right now. He is a major step down. But ok.

He sees the floor better than Zeller and facilitates the offense. The only thing Zeller does better on a regular basis is rebound. Both are bad defensive players.

Definitely not a "major step down". I can see Josh being better right now but its not by much.

And Zellers not a bad defender.

josh is clearly better than Zeller right now but I'm pleased with Zellers progress. He's no longer playing like a fringe D-Leaguer

Re: Z-Rex: The Cody Zeller Thread - Pt 2
Zeller is already a good passer for a big man, he got 3 assists tonight in 27 minutes, doing nothing out of the ordinary.
Zeller will have to take the starting spot from McBob and there is nothing wrong with that, I would not even mind if next season we started McBob and had him play 20 minutes with Cody getting 24-28 minutes a game.
Zeller is a lot closer to McBob in terms of ability, than some would admit.
Even when Zeller was playing like garbage, he was still playing hard and showing an ability to defend and board at a respectable level.
Since he's stopped fouling so much and taking the mid range jumper so much, he's been an asset both offensively and defensively.
The jumper shows potential, but his bread and butter should be as a blue collar lunch pail, freak athlete 7 footer.

Re: Z-Rex: The Cody Zeller Thread - Pt 2
i dont want to knock mcroberts just to build up zeller. i am a huge mcroberts fan and feel he is generally underrated around these parts.
that being said, the gap between zeller and mcroberts has been closed significantly over the past 2 months. it wouldnt be a surprise to see zeller start next season, even if mcroberts is on the team. then again, it also wouldnt surprise me if they kept zeller in the energy, 1st big off the bench role for another season while he continues to add strength, work on his jumper and refine his passing skills. there is no harm in continuing to bring zeller along slowly.
i disagree that zeller is a bad defender. he is a rookie who makes a lot of rookie mistakes and he is prone to get pushed around from time to time, but he is far from bad. he has all the skills and physical attribute other than long arms that should translate to a solid defensive career.
he showed tonight a knack for intelligent passing.

This.
Yet Zeller is still a long way from supplanting McRoberts. McBob has great chemistry with the starting unit and will definitely continue to start.
investigate Adam Silver

A long way? God I hope not. McRoberts looks good with the starters because the system incorporates his game. But the offense overall, to which he contributes a large share, looks slow, eats up shot clock, and is easy to figure out. I also wonder if Cody's development and ceiling will be taken into account next year when they plan for the PF position. Higgins just said the game is slowing down for Cody finally and that big men take a longer time to develop...yet the game is slowing down for him. Higgins also said the Cody gets to the gym 2 hours before it opens to shoot around with team assistants and that they don't know what his ceiling is and that it's possible he can develop a back-to-the-basket game and a 3 pointer. To me, none of it sounds like a formula for a slow track in fact Higgins said he's on the "fast track". Higgins said the game has not yet slowed down for MKG yet 2 years running now MKG has been the starter. This is a big summer for Cody but as Higgins said, whatever his ceiling is he believes Cody will reach it. I think Cody will challenge McRoberts from the beginning of the season. If McRoberts desires a long-term starting gig he should strongly consider leaving Charlotte.

But, despite what he desires, McBob will never be a long term starting option anywhere in the NBA. Charlotte is his best, and perhaps only, option to even get significant minutes must less contend to start. He may opt out to get a little more money but if he thinks there is going to be a line of suitors wanting him to be their starter the next few years he is going to be disappointed. If hes smart he will stick around here and stay with the team that seems to value and need the unorthodox aspects of his game.

Re: Z-Rex: The Cody Zeller Thread - Pt 2
Well regardless, the front office has leverage with McRoberts that they didn't have with Henderson. McRoberts should not be offered anything more than bench money if no team will make him a starter. I hope McRoberts can find a team to make him a starter because it's time to develop Cody Zeller. If you can start MKG, you can start Cody Zeller. Like I said, Higgins said Cody is on the fast track and the game is slowing down for him. He said the game is not slowing down for MKG.

I know many will try to disagree, but this reiterates my initial observation that Cody Zeller reminds me of a taller, more athletic, less tough version of Tyler Hansbrough. Attacking the rim & getting to the free throw line is their biggest strength

Better passing more athletic more skilled. Zeller will blow him away once he gets stronger.
