fatlever wrote:Amazingly Random, but Fun Scenario Question for Lin Fans

Scenario: I am a super wealthy basketball fan from Taiwan. I want to buy an NBA franchise (money is no object) and build a team around Lin that showcases him as a star level player. I am hiring you as my GM and consultant.

1) I want you to first pick a franchise for me to buy. It can be any franchise. I will pay whatever it takes. But I want it to be in a city that would be ideal for Lin.

2) Assemble a team of players to put around Lin. You can pick any players. (assume everyone is a free agent and there is no salary cap). I will pay whatever it takes to put the perfect team around Lin.

3) Pick a coach to coach the team that you assemble

The team you build must be these things:

A) A team with a chance of winning in the playoffs (doesn't have to be a championship team, but must be at least .500)

B) Lin must be a starter.

C) Lin must be no worse than the 2nd/3rd option on offense. I want Lin to be feature on offense and be the primary decision maker and facilitator as well as being one of the top 3 scorers.

So, knowing all of that, give me the franchise, the starting 5 and the coach. Go.

(I did something similar a few years back where I asked Kemba Walker fans to build me a starting 5 that can contend for a championship where Kemba is no worse than the 3rd option on offense)

I think it is fun to see what people come up with.

These are way too much fun.

PG- Jeremy Lin
SG- George Hill (2nd ball handler + D)
SF- KD (1st option)
PF- Draymond Green (3 + D + passing)
C- Al Horford (2nd option)
6th man- Batum

Coach- Rick Carlisle ... amazing coach.

City- Seattle ... yeah I know. But it would be an amazing Lin city IMHO with a new team.
My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody

I just assumed that was Jahlil. Certainly that was a typo, right? Emeka hasn't played in 2 years. Did somebody stop watching basketball in 2009?

@Vandy - Ooooh, Seattle. +10 points for creativity. I like it. Although I am not sure with Hill on the floor, Hill would allow Lin to dominate the ball and be the primary facilitator. Hill probably views himself as a better PG (whether that is right or wrong, doesn't matter).

Yep, sorry, wrong 0 fer 4. I think on my team Lin will be the #1 playmaking option and possibly 3/4 scoring option. But the guys ahead of him are not the ball dominant type ballers. Since Ibaka is over 30, not sure he can bring it on the offensive side every night, so he can just worry about defending. Lin doesn't need to do more than be a 12/8 type of PG with that team. I think that is realistic as Lin can make all those guys better and get them to work as a unit.

Let's go with:

Andre Drummond / Serge Ibaka / Kyle Korver / Anthony Morrow / Jeremy Lin

In Toronto (enormous Asian population) with Mike D'Antoni.

If I have Butler and Davis, I play pick and roll with Butler as the ball handler and Davis as the role man and tell Lin to stand in the corner with Dougie. Just sayin'.

and that team was dumbed down from Lin, Butler, Kawhi Leonard, Davis and Kristaps Porzingis :P

How about:
Lin
Kent Bazemore (shooting 55% from 3 this year)
McDermott (shooting 59% from 3 this year)
Draymond Green (shooting 46% from 3 this year)
Hassan Whiteside (leads league in blocks, 3rd in FG%, 5th in RBs)

Franchise: Golden State.****EDIT**** Change to Vancouver

Basically just give me this guy in a Lin jersey and I'll be set.

Spoiler:
Image

Coach: Pop

PG: Jeremy Lin
SG: Danny Green
SF: Kawhi Leonard
PF: Chris Bosh
C: DeAndre Jordan

Lin is the worst player, but being the only guy that can handle the ball makes him the primary decision maker/facilitator and basically having to control the ball in time will lead him to being the 3rd leading scorer. Green and Jordan's points will basically all depend on Lin getting them the ball.

Pop runs a 4 out offense with a ton of pick and rolls and pick and pops. So you've got Lin doing what he does best on managing the PnR. You have green sitting in the corners waiting for the basketball when the D collapses. Kawhi will be there for your isos and also in corner on the PnR. Bosh is your pick and pop man and wing three shooter and DeAndre is your 1 in that does what he does best, sets picks, gets the D to collapse when he rolls hard.

On defense I picked two really good wing defenders that can switch because Lin will need help on more athletic guards and at times be hidden on a less effective scorer on the wing. DeAndre protects the paint and helps weak side while Bosh, an underrated post defender, picks up the other big.

The third leading scorer might be close, I will admit. Really depends on how many points you think you can get out of Green or Jordan? I think Lin can get you close to 15 with these guys and Pop coaching. He can get to the line on the PnR and hits wide open threes well which Pop obviously schemes well for. Green and Jordan I'm thinking are in that 10-13 range.

No doubt Batum does create some great assits, but not off a dribble as a point guard. This 2nd unit has some serious trust issues, cause everyone on it is fighting for their own minutes rather than for each other.

I actually completely disagree, but it's just on the eyeball test and I'm curious to see how the stats bare this out. I feel like running Batum with the second unit gives greater stability because so far Lin and Lamb have not shown to be great at facilitating ball movement (not necessarily their fault). Lately it has seemed like Lin gets jammed up trying to create too much off the dribble, and I personally feel a lot more confident that the ball will be moved intelligently with Batum on the floor, his TOs notwithstanding.

Might be my bias though.

In general, I feel Batum on the floor with Lin is the best combination as those two could work together beautifully, play off each other, and they could be really synergistic. That was most obvious in the first three games.

However, in the past two games, Batum and Lin has less of that togetherness but more like take turns, and also Batum kind of take more on himself, and Lin defer a lot. Not sure that's coach's decision or somehow it turns out that way, it wasn't working nice, and getting close to antagonise each other.

I think for two dominant ball handlers, the best way for them to work together is to really share the ball and play off each other, that way it becomes multidimensional and way less predictable. But if they only share the ball by taking turns, it will be way less dangerous, and very limited.
