But we kind of already get wrecked on defense. Well, i guess I cant say that, we are 16th in D-Rating but we are closer to being in the bottom 5 than top 5. Our rating is 107, to be top 5 it needs to be at 103 but to be 25th we need 109.

At least the offence would probably be entertaining. Obviously we would need a better front-court for sure.

I'm warming up to WHG as a starter, but you have to have good defense on the wing and ideally also at PF if you go that route. Monk and Kemba also just aren't going to be workable defensively as a starting combination next season, especially if the front court is Frank/WHG.

I could totally get on board with something like this if we drafted Mikal Bridges (or SGA) and found someone to take Howard.

Kemba/Monk
Lamb/Bridges or SGA
MKG/Batum
Marv/Frank
WHG/Cody

Willy's 3pt shooting looks like it might be real, which takes away a lot of the issues with starting MKG. Lamb over Batum gives a secondary scoring punch and both the bigs can space the floor and help the ball handlers get open. Marv/Lamb are better defenders than Frank/Monk and can help MKG keep the starting unit defense at least respectable. Both units have four floor spacers and should theoretically have enough defense and rebounding to play both sides of the ball.

Not all analytics guys are created equal. I've personally felt like whatever Cho was using wasn't working very well, but that didn't make me think that analytics themselves were the problem. Successful teams are mostly built with strong analytic departments as a part of the bigger front office team these days.
My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody

His teenage daughter passed away a year ago from illness as well. I think he'll take his time to make sure his mourning period is done before he makes a firm decision.

I wonder if Jordan interviewed other people just to have a back up plan knowing Mitch might not be fully ready yet.

Hornets set to name Mitch Kupchak GM AND President Of Basketball Operations - Woj

Post#87 » by TheKingofSting » Thu Apr 5, 2018 12:32 am

The Charlotte Hornets have made significant progress in contract talks with Mitch Kupchak to become president of basketball operations and general manager, and a formal agreement is expected to be reached soon, league sources told ESPN.

Kupchak, who won two championships as the Los Angeles Lakers general manager, has been the focus of owner Michael Jordan's search process to replace ex-GM Rich Cho, whose contract wasn't renewed.

Kupchak will keep assistant GM Buzz Peterson in a front office role, and ultimately add his own personnel changes to the management and scouting structure, league sources said.

Jordan and Kupchak have had a long relationship built around their ties to the University of North Carolina and late coach Dean Smith.

Kupchak inherits a capped-out roster that will miss the playoffs for a second consecutive year. Charlotte has a projected payroll of $119 million for the 2018-19 season with every player under contract except for Michael Carter-Williams and Treveon Graham.

Charlotte's coach, Steve Clifford, has one year left on his contract. Kupchak has a relationship with Clifford from the coach's time on Mike D'Antoni's staff with the Lakers.

president AND GM. that is kind of unexpected. I dont like that we keep Buzz and also dont like the previous Cliff relationship, that makes it more likely we keep Cliff.

I'm not a fan of the connection with Cliff either but when something isn't working you have to fire friends sometimes. I like my closest friends but if they aren't doing a good job and I'm their boss at work they still have to go.

spaceballer wrote:It feels like a step backwards. In an era where teams are focused on analytics, Mitch is a dinosaur. If I'm recalling correctly, under him, the Lakers were one of the teams with the smallest presence at the Sloan Analytics Conference, where other teams sent much larger contingents due to more analytics personnel (even team owners like Cuban attended). And didn't LaMarcus Aldridge famously blasted Mitch's free agent pitch as being out of sync and lacking in analytics and details compared to the Spurs pitch? Mitch is like the exact opposite of the Houston guy considered for the job, who I thought would have been a better selection.

Regardless, he does bring experience to the job, so it will be interesting to see how he does with a much smaller market than LA. He seems to have an ability to put together multi-team trades.

As a Lakers fan since the mid-80s, I wholeheartedly endorse spaceballer and Vae Victus's takes on Kupchak. A treadmill pick lacking vision. But I don't know if any GM can really do much as long as MJ is the owner.

Rich Cho had this dual role after he replaced Rod Higgins as President of Basketball Ops so I don't find it "unexpected" that Kupchak will assume these positions.

I hope Kupchak finds a way to boot Buzz Peterson out and hire his own guy as assistant GM. Peterson being the "GM waiting in the wings" don't really give me the confidence to be optimistic about this franchise's future.
