The toughest decision for me to make in regards to selecting my Tuesday Album of the Week was determining with what I could surprise you guys. No matter how much I like certain genres like rock or funk, I reckon the music heads here have more knowledge and seniority than I do and would recognize anything I posted.

For that reason I went with the genre I'm familiar with the most, hip hop, and selected an album which isn't just exclusively liked by fans of hip hop. I hope that even if some of you have heard about it, no one knows it particularly well...

It's DJ Shadow's Endtroducing.....

Image

One of the first albums ever created simply on samples, Endtroducing is a deep album that always keeps you hearing something new in it. Despite several types of tracks on it, I'll always associate it with its more slow-paced songs and the atmosphere they have. Samples of somber pianos, random vocals from TV series or obscure music records, then the slow appearance of additional instruments... It's the soundtrack for lonely wandering in the middle of the night.

One could also ramble on about the influence of this album on the genre of Trip Hop or the similar records and artists which followed Shadow's work.

All in all, it's an album which I've never got tired of, even after the years of plays I've given it ever since I first heard it. One of the very few albums which gives me real pleasure when played from the first track to the last.

cool Lamar, I love learning about seminal albums that are 'first-ofs' as you mention this one of the first made of samples, amazing headphone music, from '96? doesn't sound dated at all, my instant favorites were the Mutual Slump/Organ Donor back-to-back, though I can see where repeat listens could lead to longterm addiction

great point. it indeed is from '96, yet has aged so well.

I like the calming effect that Mutual Slump has. The Xanadu and Darth Vader vocal interludes feel to me as if someone was warmly assuring me.

Cool stuff Lamar. Reminds me a lot of the many acid jazz bands I listened to in the 90s.

I know I have been posting a lot of Vulfpeck lately, but my god these dudes are so awesome. Check out this amazing cover of Stevie Wonder's "Boogie On Reggae Woman". Absolutely brilliant.

One album I've been listening to lately is War's classic, Why Can't We Be Friends?

Not only is the title song one of those catchy tunes you can't get out of your head, and prescient about today's social woes, it was one of the early precursors to rap featuring different vocalists for each verse.

The album also includes Low Rider, one of the great funky hip-shaking classics that bridged jazz, soul and hip-hop. Cow Bell!

as well as lesser known tunes that percolate with the same kind of extended jazzy, funky, latin jams.

speaking of War, a few covers of their songs.

George Benson - The World Is A Ghetto. I might have posted this before, but this is one of my favorite songs.... EVER. Definitely one of my top 5 guitar solos. Vocals start around 4:20. This song is probably the best example of the type of soloing Benson made famous where he would sing the notes of his guitar solos. Lots of people have copied since.

if you are too impatient to listen to all of it...

1st guitar solo starts at 5:16
https://youtu.be/I9HZe5vP5-M?t=5m16s

2nd guitar solo starts at 7:44 - this is the better of the two, starts off slow for about a minute, then keeps picking up intensity with some killer runs towards the end
https://youtu.be/I9HZe5vP5-M?t=7m44s

Isley Brothers - Spill The Wine - great cover of a classic Eric Burder/War song

And for something different

Smashmouth - Why Can't We Be Friend (LOL). Typical ska from the late 90s.

Late for the nominations for this week's album, but I think we need to hear from some new influences. Diop you wanna take a spin?

anyone else see Carlos Santana trending on twitter and immediately freak out thinking the worst has happened? It was just baseball stuff apparently. I'm not ready to do my top 10 Santana songs.

Although I do have a kick-ass Santana spotify mix I put together last year.

My new favorite band, Vulfpeck, dropped their new album today. It's pretty sick, as expected.

I'm a day late, but since no one posted the album of the week yesterday, I'll step up and go with this one for this week:

Chucho Valdés & the Afro-Cuban Messengers - Border-Free

Border-Free, the title of the new album from Cuban jazz pianist Chucho Valdés and The Afro-Cuban Messengers, is a metaphor for the artist’s musical aesthetic. A border defines a limit. To be borderless suggests freedom without limits. Too often when a musician is identified with a particular musical genre, it boxes him in, limiting his possibilities. While Valdés may be associated with a specific genre, that association need not keep him from exploring the whole range of musical expression. Border-Free is Afro-Cuban jazz, but it is Afro-Cuban without borders.

Border-Free is an album that makes one thing clear. No matter what ingredients Chucho Valdés mixes together, Afro-Cuban, classical, or modern jazz, in the end you get one great meal.

I have been listening to Kamasi Washington's huge (literally, it's 3 discs, 3&1/2 hrs long), The Epic (2015). Genre-bending, never boring, orchestral, cinematic, lush, exotic, occasionally cacophonous but always listenable, with vocals and strings reminiscent of a Star Trek movie theme, I'm not sure I've ever heard anything quite like it. Washington arranged the strings on Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly and toured with Snoop Dog. Informed with hip-hop, this jazz sounds idiosyncratic & forward thinking.
