The guy who published the article about our interest in Lance, Sean Deveney, works for Sporting News which is based in Charlotte. His source specifically said we were interested - "According to the source, the remaining serious suitors for Stephenson are expected to be Charlotte, Dallas — if and when the Rockets match the Mavs’ offer sheet for Chandler Parsons — and Indiana.."

http://www.sportingnews.com/nba/story/2014-07-12/lance-stephenson-nba-free-agent-charlotte-hornets-dallas-mavericks-indiana-pacers

Sports Illustrated trusted it enough to publish an article about it as well:

http://www.si.com/nba/2014/07/12/lance-stephenson-pursued-hornets-free-agent-nba-pacers

The fact that a guy who is based in Charlotte wrote the article and SI trusted it enough to write about it as well is pretty solid evidence that we're interested in Lance if you ask me.

I just don't understand this. We should be pursuing this guy aggressively. Cho needs to stick his four C's up his ass and realize that we need to take this risk. A risk that could make us a contender. Cho's four C's might, might get us into the second round.

**** why aren't we heavily linked to lance right now this pisses me off

Why Cho would ditch his 4 C's for PJ Hairston and not for Lance simply doesn't make any kind of sense.

Cho usually does his work quietly. We haven't heard much of Lance at all from any team recently. No more from any other than from us.

Fair enough, I just think it would set a bad precedent that our front office talked a big game about making a key free agency signing and all we end up with is Marvin Williams and end up taking a step back next year. I just don't think MJ would be ok with that.

did we really?

i mean, a lot of it sounded like PR bs. its not like we pulled a billy king and announced from on high that we'd go 100 mil into the luxury tax to compete. going hard for FA's just isn't something that anyone in our organization has ever done. and there's no real urgent need to do so either. i'll be honest and say that i expected us to trade for boozer and wait for FA NEXT year more than anything else.

getting booz and paying him to go away would've put us in a better position to get people next year (right before the salary cap jump) when there's a better market and our team has more time together outside of the basic layout that clifford established this year.

I hope he is pursuing Lance, but it.sometimes feels like we are trying to become the friendliest, nicest team in the league. Jazz fans talking about how great a guy Marvin is. I do appreciate that, but this is professional basketball, and we need an Alpha Dog to get us to the next level. Lance is the only young player available now who could be that guy.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

I agree, but signing Lance should have been the priority. We can bring back all of CDR, Tolliver, etc for locker room help. From all accounts, this is an already strong locker room. Overpaying for another "locker room" guy is kind of baffling particularly when our potential target could conceivably demand more than the $13M that we have.

I think Lance could do well in this locker room. Having MJ around should help. Plus if he really was that bad of a teammate the Pacers wouldn't want him back.

Latest rumor I heard is NYK are going to salary dump Stoudemire to PHI by including Tim Hardaway Jr., thereby allowing Knicks to sign Lance Stephenson.

He can demand whatever he wants but we should not pay him more then 4/40. We have plenty of room to make a fair offer for the player we are getting. He isn't a great fit on this team and is a nut case. Cho kept enough money to make a reasonable offer for the guy and if he goes elsewhere so be it.

Not sure how STAT's contract differs, but I remember reading that even if Melo walked for nothing the Knicks would still be capped out and unable to add any pieces this offseason. Unless STAT's number is significantly higher than Melo's new deal will be I don't think NYK will be able to do much. I remember reading that unloading STAT plus another small move (losing Hardaway?) would drop them out of luxury tax hell, so that's a reason the Zen Master might consider it.

@Biz Gilwalker: The only reason I can think of for taking a chance on Hairston and balking at Lance is the price tag. We can cut Hairston easily, not so with a well-paid Lance. Still, I agree with everyone who thinks it's worth a shot to sign him so long as the terms of his deal aren't ridiculous. It might just be irrational hope, but I have a feeling Lance would thrive in Charlotte with this group under Coach Clifford. Kemba is his old buddy, he embraces giving maximum effort on the defensive end, and I think the Charlotte crowd would embrace him the same way Memphis fans adopted Z-Bo a few years back with similarly positive results.

I actually hope to see that happen. Stephenson would fit great in the city of New York as it is his hometown, but moreso to me for the reason that I've always compared his recent breakthrough as a player to that of John Starks of yesteryear, or decades shall I say

I would love even more to see Stephenson in Charlotte, but I'm exhausted of that belief nowadays. If we wanted him, we could've been had him

That'd be great, then next year after the Hornets dont make any progress Kemba can leave and sign with his hometown team as well. Maybe Jamal Tinsley will be available to replace him here, im sure Rich Cho would love that.

Idk if I would give up Hardaway Jr to pay Lance 4X more.

Return to Charlotte Hornets
