Hornets’ Lance Stephenson is the least valuable player in NBA

After 38 games in a Hornets uniform, Stephenson is on the trading block as the league’s least valuable player.

To be named the league’s least valuable player, he must qualify for the points per game leader board, use at least 20 percent of his team’s possessions on offense and have negative value when it comes to helping his team win games.

Stephenson does little to contribute to the few victories Charlotte has. His minus-0.5 win shares is the lowest on the team and a severe setback from his last two years with Indiana.

When he is on the court, the Hornets score 9.5 net points per 100 possessions fewer than when he is on the bench, and the team has a deplorable 44.8 effective field goal percentage when he is in the lineup.

That’s because he doesn’t hit his shots.

According to inpredictable’s win probability added metric, which adjusts a player’s impact on winning based on score, time remaining, etc., Stephenson has the seven lowest WPA among all players (minus-2.65) and the third lowest expected win probability added based on his box score stats (minus-2.05).

There is still plenty of time for any of these guys to pick up their game, but short of an MVP-style run in the second half, it looks like Stephenson will be this year’s poster boy for NBA busts.

I was thinking about this last night. Whew, he has been absolutely horrible this year.

[my plea to Clifford] Stop giving this clown minutes!!! You now have two point guards and several wings who are worth a shot.

This season has to be a statistical outlier, nobody that routinely flirts with triple doubles can be this bad all the time.

Yes they can. Stephenson has flirted with triple-doubles this season as well. I tried to explain last season into the offseason that despite the fact that Stephenson lead the league in triple-doubles that he was a middling efficiency player

7 points/13 rebounds/8 assist vs MIL
14 points/9 rebounds/8 assist vs NYK
13 points/8 rebounds/7 assist vs PHX
10 points/8 rebounds/7 assist vs IND

Give Terrence Williams 30 minutes a night and he'd flirt with a triple double and still be awful. Boris Diaw flirted with triple doubles all the time back in 2011-12 and he was awful that year.

Lance is obviously better than what he has shown so far this year. Even if you think he is overrated there is no way you can think he is THIS bad. His fg% and 3pt% are both like 20% worse than last season. He has played fine lately if you ignore the atrocious shooting. It has to get better.

With our 2 best players being poor shooters we have to get shooting from the other 3 positions (SG,PF and if we're lucky C).

Trade Lance for a mid first round pick in this upcoming draft.

Draft Myles Turner with our pick and Devin Booker with the pick we acquire.

Kemba - Booker - MKG - Noah - Turner

Scoring, outside shooting and defence would be covered.

Ball movement and shot creation for team mates might suffer though.

Either way it would get us out of Lance's suckage!!

LOL! No one will give you a second rounder for Lance much less a first. You have to GIVE up assets to dump him. He was high risk and only three teams wanted him. you, Dal and IND....Dallas(cuban) responded "H*** no" when asked if they still had interest, IND said sure if you give us two firsts. CHA and Lance together have lost 99% of the value he had this summer.

imo, Booker and Turner will both bust. Lack of heart and hard work(and talent in Booker's case).

I'm getting tired of putting our hope in draft picks. Draft picks usually take a few years before that player is actually able to help win lots of games.

I'm afraid to say I think we're stuck with Lance at least for the rest of this season. I can't imagine any other team taking a chance on him given how poorly he's played for us. Maybe in the summer we can get someone to bite if lots of "Lance is living in the gym" stories surface. If Cho can turn Lance into anything of value at this point it will be his greatest achievement yet.

I'd be willing to give Zeller up to dump him.

Honestly, that's really stupid. Lance expires next summer. Would you give up Zeller to dump Marvin Williams? It's essentially the same thing.

Unfortunately Marv has less trade value than Lance.

“I’m just trying to get my mind off of basketball, go to my neighborhood and get my hunger back,” Stephenson told the Daily News at an event Saturday in Brooklyn to pay tribute to Brooklyn Streetball, sponsored by And1 and Slam Magazine. “With me, it’s all mental. I feel like once I get mentally into it, coming back to get that hunger.

“Cause sometimes you lose your hunger. You’ve been doing it for so long you forget all the hard work that got you here. So I’m just getting back on that, getting focused.”...

“It would be a blessing (to play in Brooklyn),” Stephenson said. “But right now, Charlotte, that’s what I’m doing right now.”
