Re: OMFKG! The Michael Kidd-Gilchrist Thread
It's funny how some people come out of the wood-work after a bad game.
MKG since the all-star break
@Orl: 6-3-2-2 blocks (in 15 minutes)
vDet: 11-6-3-3 blocks
vChi: 10-7-1 steal
vDen: 12-4-3-1 block
@LAC: 0-1-2-1 block
So when he gets the minutes he fills up a stat sheet and is damn near good for a double-double as a 19-year old who can't shoot. Yeah, still not concerned. But he has one stinker and the haters come out. Same with Biz.
@Orl: 7-5-2 blocks
vDet: 0-8-2-1 block
vChi: 7-12-3 blocks
vDen: 9-9-2 blocks
@LAC: 2-6
Neither of these guys are scorers...but they have a positive effect on the games if you pay attention, and they're only gonna improve from here. Last night, yeah they sucked. But hey, let's make blanket statements about how two of the 10 youngest players in the league aren't gonna pan out.

If by that you mean that a 19-year-old small forward that's hit the rookie wall and has played 40-50 games in his rookie season is a role player right here right now, then yes I agree with you. He's a role player who plays defense and rebounds for however long Dunlap decides he wants to play him.misterglover wrote:BrotherDave wrote:MKG is A ROLE PLAYER.

Im going to remember these things when he has a Walkerish Sophomore season and fans are nuts about him.

No I mean a 19 yr old SF thats got yall fooled to keep making excuses for him and will never be more than a 3rd or 4th option on a real team player.

I normally like to wait until a player is at least 21 or 22 before hes labeled a bust, but hey if you want to go ahead 50 games into a kids career go for it.

That is a good idea. I think I will do that myself. I wish I had done it with Kemba and it would save me a lot of time.

Don't waste your time. He doesn't appear to know much about Basketball.

MKG's jumper is so horrible, nobody would be his beer pong partner in college

I can imagine MKG playing beer pong with a hitch in his shot.

misterglover would have to be stun704's archenemy.
probably lucky stun isn't around as much this season as this thread would have blown out to 200 pages overnight.

Re: OMFKG! The Michael Kidd-Gilchrist Thread
What amazes me is that you'd think that Bobcat fans of all people would have better understanding of viewing rookie years in context. We've seen both sides of the spectrum. We've had awful rookies break out in their second year like Kemba recently and we've had a ROY never develop past his rookie year in Okafor. Everybody screaming "we should have drafted Beal/Lillard/Drummond!" shouldn't be surprised if those guys never get much better than they are now, a la Okafor.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, there is no point in wondering if we should have drafted guy A instead of MKG or Biz or Kemba, etc b/c it's too early to tell. Some players get better, some get worse, and some stay the same. There's no crystal ball or advanced stats measurement that can accurately predict busts or stars. It's all situational and situations change.

Re: OMFKG! The Michael Kidd-Gilchrist Thread
It took Zach Randolph and Jermaine O'Neal a long while to become good players.

Re: OMFKG! The Michael Kidd-Gilchrist Thread
Well BrotherDave I think people who question MKG are not basing their analysis on precedents set or not set by unrelated players sharing only status as a "rookie" or whatever. People's judgments and the criticisms that stem from them are based strictly on the individual. They are dissecting his individual numbers and responding to what they see in his individual performance with their eyes. Okafor and Kemba have nothing to do with that. I never doubted Kemba because I watched him evolve in 3 years at UConn and expected him to improve immensely in the NBA over a short period of time. I think the fans most in doubt of MKG not only don't like what they see but haven't seen evidence that he will project to improve significantly. Not saying you're saying this but for anyone to suggest that critics of any player don't understand fundamentally the principle of general improvement over time, fails to really confront the actual criticisms. An honest conversation is grounded in both what he is doing now and what he is capable of doing. Not one or the other.

Re: OMFKG! The Michael Kidd-Gilchrist Thread
Most of the criticisms against MKG are unjustified. There is really only one legitimate knock on MKG right now, which is his jump shot. But the rest of his game is average or good and only going to get better. Stop giving a damn about stats or even the eye test right now b/c both are lying to us. The only thing that matters to a rookie is getting used to the speed and life of the NBA and the length of its schedule. That's it. All of our young guys are playing their first NBA season of consistent minutes (Kemba, Biz, and Mully have never played a full 82 game season yet either).
MKG can't shoot, Mully can't defend, Biz can't catch, and Kemba can't do everything. It's a team game. You're not gonna switch any of our core players with a more attractive player and see dramatic improvement. Swap MKG with Barnes and we're still awful. Biz with Faried or Thompson, same difference. But as these guys all develop and learn to play, they'll be able to lean on each other and make the game easier. Mullens improves his D and suddenly Biz gets more rebounds. Biz learns to catch passes and Kemba gets more assists. Kemba improves his passing and everyone benefits. Ball movement becomes prevalent, roles are adhered to, defense becomes a point of pride, winning becomes achievable. If the Bobcats play good basketball then their players can shore up their weaknesses but if the Bobcats play lousy basketball then every player will continue to run around like a scared nancy, afraid of making a mistake.

Awesome post.
You should add to the bolded that Dunlap can't do anything.
