Recency bias is a real thing.

A few weeks ago some posters were saying he should be trade fodder.

Over the off season some posters were saying he’s a lost cause.

Now he’s our second best player...

Yeah, I've been big on Miles since we drafted him, but he's not there yet in regards to being as good as Rozier, Hayward, Lamelo. I think he may have taken the leap over PJ though. Mainly due to PJ being inconsistent. Seems like he'll have 2 or 3 great games then randomly score 2 points with 4 rebounds.

In terms of how good they are right now I'd rank the team

1 - Hayward
2 - LaMelo
3 - Rozier
4 - Miles
5 - Monk
6 - PJ
7 - Graham
8 - McDaniels
9 - Zeller
10/11/12 - don't care

I think Miles, PJ, and Monk, are all fairly close and they are all still developing, so I think you could put them any order in the 4-6 spots. Graham and McDaniels are also kind of hard to compare since they are so different, so I wouldn't blame someone for putting McDaniels ahead of Graham based on his defense. I feel pretty confident about the top 3, but after that I can see arguments for a lot of different placings.

So where do we see Miles maxing out at?

What would be his best, and most sustainable averages? And who would be his best pro comp?

I actually have no idea. Last season I was thinking something like a Josh Smith type, but Smith couldn't shoot free throws or from deep and Miles can obviously do that.

Edit: Smith was also a terrific shotblocker. I don't ever see Miles sniffing 3 big, although that'd be wonderful.

I'm not sure honestly.

Hes really coming into his own as a defender, which is huge, and I see no reason it wouldnt be sustainable.

Hes still young and should continue to improve on offense too, but its possible it might be hard for him to continue putting up the kind of numbers he has recently once teams figure out how to defend him better unless he adds more to his repertoire. Up until very recently he was basically a complete afterthought on offense who teams had no reason to focus on or game plan for because of how passive he was and how little he was usually involved. He still has some nice tools, though, so it could also be possible that his ceiling is even higher than what we've seen recently.

Tobias Harris feels like a fair comparison though Miles is better on defense than Tobi has ever been. I just hope we never have to max him lol

Also, what’s his ideal role?

Starting SF
Starting PF
Starting small ball C
Bench SF/PF/C

My vote is for starting PF. Once Hayward is back, who will be the starting SF, Miles creates mismatches against other 4s. He also can guard 1-4 so his versatility allows us to switch a lot on defense.

At this point I would put Miles absolute ceiling somewhere near prime Shawn Marion. It's not a perfect comp because Marion was a better defender and Miles is a better shooter, but basically I see his best outcome as a borderline all-star who leverages world-class athleticism to make a big impact at SF/PF. Now that it seems like he has his shot figured out defense will be his final frontier. If he can work himself into an elite defender then he's Marion with a jumper which would be incredible.

I think his best position is probably small ball PF but really it depends on overall roster construction. I don't think he's much worse as a SF.

This season I would bring him off the bench still once everyone is healthy to balance the lineups and allow him to be more involved on offense. LaMelo, Rozier, and Hayward, is plenty of offense for the starting unit and Miles will end up being the 4th option in that lineup. I like him and Monk as the main bench scoring options for now. I'd start McDaniels at PF and let him go balls out on defense and stand in the corner on offense. Miles ability to play both forward spots makes it really easy to still find him plenty of minutes even if he comes off the bench.

Edit: Hayward might not come back this season, in which case I'd start him and McDaniels at the forward spots (don't think it matters which one you call SF or PF).

I've spent a ton of time this season thinking about PJ and Miles, and the FO has a really interesting puzzle on their hands deciding what to do with them. Miles has broken out massively in the tail end of his third season, and I really think PJ could follow the same trend.

I'm very tempted to roll with a starting lineup that includes both of them and have a big oaf backup to help us with the Embiid types as needed.

I have to see how he plays with a complete roster before I start having these conversations. His offensive production since everyone went out has been remarkable but he was distinctly JAG before and seemed comfortable in that place.

If he can maintain a 18/20 ppg role then he's easily a core piece.

Otherwise, I'm not really into signing dudes long term to be role players.

We wasted Kemba's entire functional career by giving out a bunch of loyalty deals and never having the balls or wherewithal to find a second high level option.

I'm still of the opinion that we keep a high roster turnover until that second guy is found. Melo was able to show star potential within a month of his career. That we're still debating about these other guys multiple years into their careers is just about proof that they aren't the answer long term, unfortunately.

Yeah I was just thinking last night about Washington as our starting center going forward. Like you said would definitely need a big dude backing him up though. Is Carey or Richards that guy? Who knows.

Perhaps...but I do feel that Melo showing star potential this early is more of an exception than the rule...he's a rare breed of generational talents that are appropriately named in the fact that there are not many of them that come along (and thank God we finally hit a home run in the draft with him).

Each player is different. There have definitely been a bunch of players over the years that needed 2-3-4 years to really come into their own. Just this year look at Julius Randle.

Randle is as much (if not more) of an exception to the rule as Melo is.

You generally know within two years what kind of guy you're looking at.

And if I'm being honest, none of the guys on the roster except Melo scream perennial All-Star to me. Hayward and Rozier are borderline, but neither one really fit into the Melo timeline. The team also has limited flexibility with the Hayward contract and will have even less if they sign Monk/Miles/Graham to those Cody Zeller deals. I genuinely hope guys like Miles and Monk take that All-Star step because that makes things much easier moving forward.

Hard decisions need to be made in order to capitalize on Melo's rookie contract

If that is the case we should have flipped Walker after 2 years because it took him 3 1/2-4 years to come good and prior to that he was highly suspect.

I hear what you’re saying though, cash strapping the roster isn’t a good move, but all players aren’t going to be great, some are just good - and we need good players to support the great one/s.

The trick is not overpaying for them.

So Miles at $20mil a year over 4 years sounds great.

But Miles at $30mil a year over 6 years not so much.
