Summer School: Gerald Henderson

Post#1 » by BigSlam » Mon Jun 7, 2010 1:08 pm

We can create a thread for each player to discuss the things you would like to see the player work on over the summer and bring to the team next season. This isn't about their contract status or a bashing thread or love fest thread or a trade thread or a player comparison thread. Just a thread of improvement ideas.

There were some great signs from Hendo very, very late in the season when he saw some time on the court. He showed off his athletic ability and boundless energy.

He's silky and long and get cover a lot of ground very quickly so I would like to see him use that to his advantage. Over the summer if he worked on his handle it would really help him (and us!!). He needs to work on changing directions as well as shooting about a zillion mid range J's a day.

Tape of guys to study: Dwayne Wade (for his ability to slink through the paint and get to the rim) and Kobe (for his three dribble, pull up, elevate and shoot mid range game).

What would you guys say?

left hand - break his right arm over the summer and force him to learn how to go left.

Why can't he extend his range from beyond the arc? He would be a tremendously valuable asset if he could just shoot the 3 consistently and would take away all kinds of pressure off Felton (or whoever our PG of the future is).

if he can start hitting 3s, he really can become rodney carney with better defense. yay. 3s, dunks and nothing in-between, no passing, no handles, no left hand. i'm super-excited.

sorry for being so sarcastic, but i have zero faith in the bobcats ever developing a draftee. none of our draft picks ever improve.

You gotta have more hope than that. Larry HATES playing rookies. Do you remember it took Kobe 3 years to get into the starting lineup? So come on lol. You must not like Duke University huh? Duke is not the NBA, Charlotte is the NBA! LOL If Henderson gets more playing time and LB gives Jackson some more rest on a regular basis every game, then you'll see how awesome Henderson can be! 8-)

I don't know what to think of Hendo. Kobe is definitely a good starting point, Wade too... but I think that could be a bit overwhelming for a player that needs so much work. Maybe Iguodala or Salmons are better starting points?

Forget Sean Big Mac May! Forget Adam bad stache Morrison! LB is gonna give both Derrick Brown and Gerald Henderson a shot this coming up year! Just have a little faith in these Bobcats and you'll be ok! Don't sweat the small stuff dude!

it has nothing to do with duke. i actually prefer duke players to unc guys once they get to the nba. i find unc guys to be jerks once they get to the nba, usually, minus felton and jamison.

i just have no faith in any of our draftees ever improving greatly from what they are now. its not like henderson was an 18 year old rookie out of high school. he was a 3 year starter for a major college program. i think he will be a solid rotation guy (6th to 8th man) from years to come and i was ok with the pick at the time, but i am not going to fool myself into thinking he will become a quality starter or potential star. he has way too many holes in his game. but, he will work hard, practice hard, be a smart player, play good defense and hustle and thats good enough for a bench guy. no harm in that.

ive never understood the kobe or wade comparisons. they have one trait that hendo is missing, ball handling - the ability to put the ball on the floor and get anywhere you want. hendo can only go right and if that fails, there is no second option. when wade was a rookie he was a borderline pg, able to dribble, create and pass. could you imagine trying to watch hendo play pg?

maybe someone like deshawn stevenson is a decent comparison. strong, athletic, very good defender, solid rotation guy for many years. what about tony allen (with a brain)? another strong, athletic, good defender type, who just doesnt have the complete package to be a starting caliber sg on a good team.

Adderall? He needs to learn how to dribble for sure. His defense is solid, his open court game is solid. He's just not very polished. MJ needs to just make him his project. Have Hendo follow him around (when near a basketball court) and just teach him EVERYTHING.

What sucks is that I think he'd be a great SG next to DJ for the future.

When I say I want him to watch footage of those guys it's not that I think he'll be as good as them one day, it's just that they have skill sets and aspects of their games that he should try and emulate.

I certainly don't see him like Kobe in the slightest. Wade I see some similarities (body type, size, athletic ability, defense etc) but I'm not suggesting he has all of Wades tools.

I agree completely. I say he should be MJ's project like that other dude said.

Put him in a summer league and make him play point guard, like Nelson did with Dirk back in the day.

Make him watch early Grant Hill tapes and show him what ball handling combined with athleticism can bring.

Otherwise continuing to work on your shooting is something a shooting guard should always do.

Grant Hill is an excellent suggestion.

Life in the NBA is tough for guards that can't shoot three's. Work with somebody who knows what they are doing and take 1000 Jumpers a day.
