Tyson Chandler Considering To Opt Out?

It looks like I may need to add another name to my Top Free Agent List this summer.

A source close to the situation told ESPN.com that Bobcats big man Tyson Chandler is seriously considering exercising an early termination option on his contract this summer. If Chandler terminates his contract early, he'll forfeit the remaining $12.6 million he's due from the Bobcats and become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st.

Chandler, who is now 27 years old, had his best year during the 2007-08 season averaging 11.8 ppg and 11.8 rpg while shooting a scintillating 63 percent from the field. At the time he was considered one of the best defensive centers in the NBA. However, Chandler has struggled with injuries the last two seasons in New Orleans and Charlotte. The same source said that Chandler is now totally healthy and working out in California preparing for the 2010 season.

"He's gotten all of his issues taken care of," the source said, "and he's gearing up to have a big year next season. I think you're going to see the same Tyson who played so well for the Hornets a few years ago."

I can sort of see this making sense for Chandler.

Lots of teams have cap space this year ... and not all of them are going to be able to grab a top tier guy. He would be a second choice for most teams, but he will get paid somewhere.

Also this is his last shot to get a contract covered by the current CBA. If the next CBA is more restrictive, which most folks think it will be, then this could be a smart time to sign a long contract.

The flip side is that it's a bit risky. He isn't going to be signed for $12 mil for next year. It would all come down to lenght of contract and hopefully getting more money over more years with the current CBA ... and that could backfire.

From the Bobcat's perspective I hope he opts out. I like TC, but not at $12 mil next year.

interesting... happy to hear he is finally 100% healthy, but sad if that means we dont get the benefits, but happy to have 12 mil off the books...

so he gives up 12 mil, but maybe he can ink a 4 year 32 mil deal this offseason. if he waits til next year, who knows what happens. he could have another serious injury or like VG said, run the risk of dealing with a new cba.

Agreed, no need to overpay just because you suddenly come into some cash. Gives us some flexibility for signing a guy or a trade.

I see this as a win-win. If he's healthy enough to opt out but doesn't then we'd have a decent center next year. If he does opt out then we can retain whom we want without worrying about the luxury tax.

I'm sure that's his camp's line of thinking. Having said that, any GM who is willing to pay him 8 million per year for four years after the past two seasons he has had needs to have their head examined.

im not saying i would pay him that... but i can totally see some team giving him a deal like that. i have no faith in gms and their ability to offer reasonable contracts.

Great news, I hope he opts out. That was the ultimate goal of the Okafor trade; to shed salary. We'll lose a trading piece, but we still have Mohammed who likely won't opt out.

take whatever Chad Ford has to say with a grain of salt...we at the sixers forum have our share of "insider's info" from him for a while...

for example, Ford's insight about how we were targetting Cousins/Favors over Turner...then about a week later quickly state that we're targetting Turner for sure...

He's a "hobbit on crack". Totally. He spends the time of survivor by digging burrows till he finds some precioussss and starts to have superiority complex problems on full throttle. On reunion then he is so deranged that he can't even count to two thinking it was all just a one long journey. Then he comes back to Texas.

In one sentence Russell H. is a contestant in two consecutive (and currently two last aired) seasons of Survivor and is being considered as the most evil contestant yet, most strategically scheming and playing balls to the wall neglecting social aspect of the game in the process thus never winning the game despite getting to the final 3 both times he played. Most memorable things about his play is finding immunity idols without clues and sabotaging his own team to get into his tribemates head.
