Damn you Walt, I was about to post something and then "sorry, this thread is locked blah blah blah"

Anyways:

@Swedd - I know you didn't say trade Crash for Williams. I was referring to your Crash + Diaw for Landry + Thompson idea, which would come after the T.Williams deal. Thus, in that way, T.Williams would be replacing Crash.

Also, anyone want to do an over/under on how many pages this goes before Dampier is traded?

I say 20.

I'm afraid it'll be longer. 27 pages.

I forgot about Voshon Lenard. The nostalgia. Hmm, Bonzi Wells anyone?

@Stun - IMO, that kind of talent is best served as trade value for proven veterans. Look at Boston. They traded a top five pick for an aging Ray Allen. They traded several prospects (Al Jefferson being the only quality one) for an aging Kevin Garnett. They've developed only a handful of prospects (Rondo, Perkins, Davis) versus the number of guys they've brought in (Wallace, Shaq, Jermaine O'Neal, Michael Finley, Nate Robinson, etc). It's worked very well for them.

The same goes for the Lakers. Beyond Bynum who always manages to hurt his foot, who else have they developed lately? The youngest player on their roster, besides their picks this year, is Shannon Brown. They didn't draft him.

And now, the same exact thing goes for the Heat. Three of the best teams in the NBA building through quality veterans instead of rookie talent. It's worked for the Lakers and Celtics and I'm only assuming that the Heat will have no trouble winning with LeBron and Bosh instead of Beasley and [insert some rookie / young player here].

Yes, because blockbuster deals like those happen ALL the time.

Way to pick the 3 most extreme cases in all of sports to support your argument.

If any of those teams don't -draft- and develop Kobe, Pierce, and Wade then those teams aren't winning jack anyways.

Okay, so let's examine a non-blockbuster deal.

Charlotte trades Wright for Richardson.

Richardson nets us Diaw and Bell.

Bells nets us Jax.

Wright would have never helped us obtain Bell & Diaw, thus it would have been unlikely to obtain Jax, thus we wouldn't have made the playoffs this year.

I'm not saying that you don't need to draft *one* star, but once you have him, then you can use future picks to place solid veterans around him. The rookie building worked for OKC but that's less common than blockbuster deals, otherwise Minnesota would have a championship by now.

Instead of drafting Morrison, why not trade that pick for a veteran SG that we needed at the time? Why draft Felton & May when we could have likely dealt both picks for a quality veteran PG. We had our stars in Wallace & Okafor to build around, never put any star veteran presence around them, and that's why it's taken a half-decade+ to get this team into the playoffs.

In most cases, I'll take the proven commodity over the high-risk, high-reward gamble.

5 words...

Kobe Bryant for Vlaude Divacs

This is what could have been if we didn't go by that philosophy

Kobe could have easily been a bust in Charlotte. At the time, that was the best move to make.

13th overall picks (1990-2010):

Ed Davis, Tyler Hansbrough, Brandon Rush, Julian Wright, Thabo Sefolosha, Sean May, Sebastian Telfair, Marcus Banks, Marcus Haislip, Richard Jefferson, Courtney Alexander, Corey Maggette, Keon Clark, Derek Anderson, Kobe Bryant, Corliss Williamson, Jalen Rose, Terry Dehere, Bryant Stith, Dale Davis, Loy Vaught

Divac was better than many of those guys. The trade was the right thing to do at the time and there was no guarantee that Kobe would be nothing more than the next Bryant Stith. Vlade, on the other hand, was a proven NBA starter.

exactly why you shouldn't trade potential young talent for maxed-out-declining veterans liberally, You never can really know how a player will translate in the NBA, the worse can happen is your team continues to suck and you will get a higher lottery pick next year, instead of being stuck in 9th seed mediocrity.

regarding kobe/divac - in reality not a great example. charlotte picked kobe in a pre-arranged deal. charlotte would not have picked kobe if the deal wasnt already in place. kobe made it clear he wasnt interested in playing in charlotte and old school gm bob bass had no interest in a high school shooting guard.
