Philly and Hornets Trade - An Opening for Us? (idea)

Post#1 » by BigSlam » Thu Sep 23, 2010 4:24 pm

We need an offensive big on the roster. With Phily trading for Brackins and already having Brand and Hawes on the roster not to mention Young who they play at the 4, I wonder if there is any way we can steal Marreese Speights away from them?

Speights has great size which would enable him to play the 5 next to Tyrus. He's a natural scorer who can rebound and even block some shots.

I remember DX being VERY high on him going into his draft.

Could they use a year of Nazzy at the 5? How about Hendo backing Turner/Iggy?

Thoughts?

I think they would trade Hawes before Speights. But, if a trade could happen, I'd be for it. Speights is a workhorse.

Also, quoting from Speights page on ESPN:

News: Speights' should see an increased role as the Sixers' backup center after Jason Smith was traded to the Hornets Thursday.
Spin: Smith's departure leaves Speights and Spencer Hawes as the only two legitimate centers on the Sixers' roster. Elton Brand will be used there at times, but he is too undersized to play significant minutes there. Look for Speights to push for 20-plus minutes backing up Hawes and Brand this season, and an injury to the front court could make him a valuable waiver wire addition in-season. Make sure you have this promising young big man on your watch lists.

I would have really liked Green since he was obviously available. Good defensive guard that LB could have used well.

Speights + Kapono for Nazr + Hendo works. Problem being they don't need Hendo. If we're doing a trade with Philly, I'd love to get Kapono back. Great shooter, personal favorite, I think he would embrace a return to Charlotte.

It would be pretty hillarious if we ended up with Kapono and Hammer both back on the roster at the same time and under Larry Brown.

And, I'm not so sure they wouldn't have a need for Hendo.

At the moment they only really have:

SG: Turner - Meeks
SF: Iggy - Kapono

Looks like they could use some depth there - no?

I'm convinced Jaruff would trade Hendo for a sack of rotten potatoes just to do it!

Speights can't play center though. Dude likes to disappear during games a lot too... I'd do it if this were 2k or something, but since we're already invested in Tyrus I'd have to pass.

I sure would, especially if those potatoes included Kapono.

Speights is a black hole. Gunner big time.Speights more of a 4 than 5. Would not want to trade Nazr for him. Defeats the purpose doesn't it?

I am a Florida fan and watched Speights throughout his college career and he is not a center in my eyes. He's not your typical low post, back you down, center. He's more of a face to the basket player. He's a good player but expecting him to play the center full time probably isn't going work out. Love to get him though, but he's similar to Tyrus.

Speights was tearing it up before he hurt his MCL. By the time he came back Brand was starting to actually put some numbers up so Spegihts lost his spot.

I'm not so sure that Speights couldn't play the 5, but let's say he can't. How about this then?

We trade Nazzy and Hendo for Speights and Kapono (or something like that) then trade Diaw to the Blazers for Joel Przybilla getting us out of his contract.

There's no doubt Speights has talent and is up and coming player but he really isn't a full time 5. Those trades you suggested makes more sense. Pryzbilla would be a upgrade at Center and Speights could fill in when needed at the 4/5.

I would do it, but why would Philly? Speights is a young big who I do think can play the 5 in many matchup situations. He would pair nicely with Tyrus, with our larger C's coming off the bench depending on who we're playing. But why deal him for Nazr (rent for a year) and just get Henderson to replace Kapono? I guess if they liked the deal so be it. I'd do it, but I just don't see the 76'ers going that route.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

To balance out their roster.

I have no clue as to why any sane person would move Henderson for Kapono...

Has anyone actually seen Kapono play recently?

Kapono isn't any good now. Even DJ shot better than he did last season, and we've already got our 'just stand in the corner and hit 3s' guy in Matt Carroll.

But Kapono is an expiring (like Nazr) and we need Speights as a young center (for now and our future), even more than Henderson.

Except Speights isn't a center. We've already got a guy who plays a similar face up way at the same position in Tyrus - and he just got paid.
